New Technician from Oklahoma
17
Hello from Edmond Oklahoma! I have been reading the messages on this group and getting plenty of good ideas and advise. Last night I successfully passed the Technician exam, and I expect to receive my new call-sign from the FCC on Monday! I bought a used FT-60R on Ebay, and have it working with Commander for programming from my Windows 11 laptop. I have it loaded with local repeaters, and will be joining the local club EARS (Edmond Amateur Radio Society). Thanks to this group I successfully got the programming cable driver issues worked out... still very much the noob in HAM and with the FT-60, and looking forward to learning more and my first successful contact, hopefully tomorrow or the next day when I am FCC officially licensed. 73 Todd

I'm expected to be comm support for the Boston Marathon tomorrow at 4:45 EDT. But I can't program the repeaters into my FT60R

If anyone can translate the documentation with the traps outlined where you can easily go wrong, I would be most appreciative and so will the people who are counting on me, at the moment - in vain.

Crackly volume Pot

It’s not intermittent yet, but I’m hearing some crackle as I adjust the volume. How can I get some DeOxit to the pot? Do I need to disassemble the radio? Thanks Chris

Yaesu replacing ceramic filters in 2 radios
4
Greetings, We have 2 FT-60R radios. A few months ago, the audio began sounding distorted. Sort of like when you have a weak battery and there's enough juice to get some audio out, but not clearly... We tried swapping batteries (fully charged) but no difference... The audio was that way when receiving from another FT-60R or from our base station. Simplex or via a repeater. Seemed to happen after several minutes of powering up. Sent them back for warranty repair and the tech said they both checked good. I explained they needed to be on and used several minutes before the issue shows up. He agreed to continue bench testing, then ship them back. He said to record the issue next time. I just called and they said they are waiting for ceramic filters to come in so they can be repaired and returned. Can the IF filters cause such receive distortion? Can they just go bad without any physical damage? Just curious... Any thoughts on the audio? At first I thought the front end was saturated by being close to the transmitting radios, but even 100 feet away from my mobile radio it had this issue... New to the group. Thanks.

Faulty PTT switch?
My FT-60R, several light-duty years old, is terrific on all counts, except one. Either the PTT switch is intermittent or there's something wrong with my left thumb. ? Checking into a local two-meter net, the HT leaves transmit and I hear the repeater drop. I hope I’m simply not on the “sweet spot” of the rubber-covered button. My solution is to use the Yaesu-specified speaker mike. It works without a hitch. I tend to have a rubber band handy to keep the mike reliably plugged in.-- -- philip.milazzo@... 484-868-3056 mobile http://beknown.com/philip.milazzo

FT-60 audio a bit muffled just for m the radio no Speaker mic...

Has anyone modded there FT 60 to get more high Freq response? I heard you can remove the membrane that is on the inside of the case to get better mic response...I will try this as I have two of these radios ...

Noisy Volume Pot
3
I’m starting to get some cracking when adjusting volume. I have some cleaners here, including the version of DeOxIT intended for pots and faders. Where do I apply a tiny bit? Do I need to open the radio to get at the actual pot? Thanks Chris

Using Digirig with FT-60

I would like to try this to access Winlink. Does anyone know where I can get a pre-made cable. I am in the middle of a move and all my "stuff" is in storage. Thanks, Harris K9RJ

FBA-25A battery case question
8
The instructions molded into my FBA-25A battery case state "For alkaline batteries only". I have a handful of no-name NiMH rechargeable AA batteries that fit into the case. However, these batteries are every so slightly larger in diameter than a normal alkaline, so, the FBA-25A slides onto the back of the FT-60 but will not latch -- comes very close but won't latch. The FT-60 comes on with the case in place but the battery case is not snapped into the body of the FT-60. Anyone have any suggestions for rechargeable AA's that will fit into the FBA-25A that are not so big the case will not snap? Thanks, Joe W4HH

FT-60 not charging battery
12
My Yaesu FT-60 will not charge the re-chargeable FNB-83 battery. The radio works great when plugged into my truck and reads +/- 12v. When I use the battery re-charger in the wall outlet it reads 12v+. I also checked the plug in power charger, without being connected, with a meter and it reads 12v. After charging the battery (purchased 18 months ago and seldom used) it will only read about 6v and quickly drops to 5v. I even switched to my original battery but will still only charge to 6v and drops. When using the alkaline battery pack I get 9v and works good. Suggestions? Perhaps a "bad" battery or something wrong with the charging circuitry?

Andersen PowerPole connector?

Can anyone please tell me what connector I will need if I am going to make an Andersen PowerPole adapter for the DC In port to my Ft-60? Is it 4 or 4.5mm? Thank you, Stuart W1SLC

Keyboard locking?
6
Today I have my FT-8900 set up as a cross band repeater. This allows me to use my FT-60 on 146.520 transmitting with 50 watts. Unfortunately, I have bumped into some things around the house and pressed buttons on the keypad. I also have an FT-70 that I use for C4FM operations. The '70 has an easy-to-activate keyboard lock to avoid changing the radio settings unintentionally. I don't see anything on the FT-60 that's similar. Does anyone have trouble with accidental key presses? How do you deal with it? Jim N4FAF

PowerPoles - Not for Permanent Installations
13
A note on PowerPoles ... if not "used" (connecting/disconnecting) often, they can develop resistance in that two-spring contact. Enough to slow or even stop 100-200mW loads. Look at a cross-section of the contacts - and see how very little metal-to-metal contact there actually is. So - using for non-permanent installations, like taking equipment to events or for demos - is great. But if not "working" by disconnecting-connecting, the contacts can corrode and create a little resistance. Tiny Jones' screw plug connectors are a great choice for shack installations. -- Clint Bradford K6LCS http//www.work-sat.com

Digit 1 Replaced by a "P "on Display of Memory Tag
8
Hi Guys, I hope somebody can be kind enough to refresh my old memory. I just got a new programming cable for my FT-60R to able to update the radio's programmed frequencies. I've checked the manual but could not find a mention of this - on a couple of my 2M simplex channels, 146.520, 146.415, 146.445 MHz, the first digit "1" shows as a "P" on the radio display.... Would anyone know why this is so... TIA

Wow, 2,600 LiIon Pack?
9
Has anyone tried one of these? What charger would go with this? https://www.canadianbatteries.com/battery-for-yaesu-ft60-ft60r-60r-74v-2600mah-1924wh-p-13551.html Admittedly I don’t know much about NiMH versus LiIon, other than NiMH apparently last for more charge/discharge cycles, but LiIon work better in the extreme cold.

Unwanted DTMF on PTT
10
My FT-60 is now transmitting a short DTMF tone when I key the PTT button. I can't for the life of me find any reference to anything like this in the User Guide, searching "Tone" or "DTMF" or "Beep." Not sure what made this happen, but I'd like it go go away, would appreciate an assist! Thanks. Chuck WV8A

Charging Ni-MH battery with the Li-ion Charger
2
I have had my FT-60 HT for a number of years. It has been my go to radio over all others. I have two NI-MH batteries for the radio and just purchased a Li-Ion battery for the unit. Due to the different requirements of the Li-ion battery I had to buy a charger specifically designed for that battery. Right now I charge the Ni-MH batteries in the radio because I've had two desk chargers fail. Can I use the new Li-Ion charger for the Ni-MH batteries as well. Thanks in advance. Jack NZ5TX
