PowerPoles - Not for Permanent Installations

A note on PowerPoles ... if not "used" (connecting/disconnecting) often, they
can develop resistance in that two-spring contact. Enough to slow or even stop
100-200mW loads.

Look at a cross-section of the contacts - and see how very little metal-to-metal
contact there actually is.

So - using for non-permanent installations, like taking equipment to events or?
for demos - is great. But if not "working" by disconnecting-connecting, the?
contacts can corrode and create a little resistance.
Tiny Jones' screw plug connectors are a great choice for shack installations.

Complete nonsense, stop spreading misinformation.

Yes, I’ve never heard this about PowerPoles until now.

?

If that were a post full of medical assertions, I would ask for supporting evidence from peer-reviewed publications. I’m not sure if the electronics world has such a thing…

Anderson themselves addresses the phenomenon ...

  • Flat wiping contact system
Allows for minimal contact resistance at high current, wiping action cleans contact surface during connection/disconnection.

And for the engineers ...

And please - I hope no one saw my original post and interpreted it as, "DRAMATIC POWER LOSS?
WHEN USING POWERPOLES!!!!!" It is just a matter of physics ... and Anderson, too, promotes the?
"cleaning/wiping" of the models we're using in amateur radio.

?You had an isolated issue, you cannot state "Not for Permanent Installations" because you had an issue.
I have worked with these for years in industry, they are used in mission critical UPS systems, medical life support, robotics, industrial automation and the list goes on.

If you had an issue then that is likely due to any of the following:

Non genuine Anderson Power Pole terminals and/or housing
Incorrectly terminated terminals
Wrong type of connecter for environment or wrong terminal plating. They are available in tin or silver plated.
Current capability exceeded for particular terminal or series of connector.

"Anderson themselves addresses the phenomenon ...

You have taken that out of context completely.?

I am not condemning genuine Anderson Powerpoles. Nor their use by the?
amateur radio community. I, too, have used them for commercial clients (from?
our 15-20AH models, to those used by Crown forklift charging systems) - as well as?
for mobile emergency comms centers, and just good ole ham installations.

>> ... You had an isolated issue...

No - I didn’t author the laws of physics nor contact resistance.

..?Non genuine Anderson Power Pole terminals and/or housing ...

Not me. Genuine Powerpoles only from authorized Anderson dealers are the only ones?
we should be using.

That is about as on-point a comment from Anderson on the exact models we are using in the?
ham radio community as one can get.?

Anderson is shut down for the weekend. I’ll call my rep next week and get back to you.

I just use Walmart battery automotive disconnects and mostly spade lugs at varying current capacities ( things you can easily get anywhere =)

Necessity versus engineering /-)

The beauty of Powerpoles, though, is that you can take your equipment to sites /?
Field Day installations / American Red Cross chapters / et al - and have access to?
immediate and painless power ...

Truly close to a "standard" in an industry with so many "variables."

My problem is COST and AVAILABILITY LOCALLY =)

To all,

This has been quite a discussion about PowerPoles, and we have heard multiple facts and opinions.

I realize I do not step in often and generally moderate in "quiet-mode" but this list is specifically about the Yaesu FT-60 handheld and we need to keep on topic for all of those who subscribed to this list for this reason in the first place.

Let's consider this topic closed and return to discussions specifically regarding the FT-60.

Thank you and Happy New Year!
