New Technician from Oklahoma
Hello from Edmond Oklahoma! I have been reading the messages on this group and getting plenty of good ideas and advise. Last night I successfully passed the Technician exam, and I expect to receive my new call-sign from the FCC on Monday! I bought a used FT-60R on Ebay, and have it working with Commander for programming from my Windows 11 laptop. I have it loaded with local repeaters, and will be joining the local club EARS (Edmond Amateur Radio Society). Thanks to this group I successfully got the programming cable driver issues worked out... still very much the noob in HAM and with the FT-60, and looking forward to learning more and my first successful contact, hopefully tomorrow or the next day when I am FCC officially licensed.

开云体育Hi Todd
This combo will greatly increase your range.
I use it on my FT60.
I still recall my first QSO on an IC2a 4 decades ago!
All the best

Plans for some easy-to-build high-gain handheld antennas for your new radio are on the ANTENNAS page at work-sat.com

开云体育Congratulations, Todd. The TF-60 is a great radio. I have had mine for over 10 years and the only thing I had to do is get another battery. The one thing I like about the radio is that it has a squelch knob. It makes is nice for satellite use. ? Ron W8HBF ? From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Todd Kersh

开云体育I made a tape measure antenna. It will increase the range of the radio. ? ? Ron W8HBF ? From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Todd Kersh

I want to try a tape measure antenna some day.? If you want something a little more omnidirectional, try a quarter wave ground plane:??. I have built several.? If you are keeping a short budget for your radio activities, you can use RG-6 coax with an HT.? It's cheaper than RG-8X or RG-8.? It is rated for 75 ohms rather than 50, but I have had no problems with it.? I have not tried it with more than 5w transmit power.? Probably not a good idea since this coax is intended?for hooking up cable TV signals.? If you don't have any sitting around, you should probably spring for some flavor of 50 ohm coax.
