FT-60 not charging battery

My Yaesu FT-60 will not charge the re-chargeable FNB-83 battery. The radio works great when plugged into my truck and reads +/- 12v.? When I use the battery re-charger in the wall outlet it reads 12v+.? I also checked the plug in power charger, without being connected, with a meter and it reads 12v.? After charging the battery (purchased 18 months ago and seldom used) it will only read about 6v and quickly drops to 5v. I even switched to my original battery but will still only charge to 6v and drops.? When using the alkaline battery pack I get 9v and works good.

Suggestions?? Perhaps a "bad" battery or something wrong with the charging circuitry?

If you are using the side power port, the older FT-60’s would charge the battery when plugged in. The newer FT-60’s power the radio only when plugged into the side port. ?You need a drop in charger, otherwise. ? I’m not sure when the change was made, or why.?

Edited

EDIT: Yaesu advises it WAS a "California requirement." But one that made?
it more convenient for us to charge ...

>> ... not sure why ...

Original story was that Yaesu and California decided NOT to let the AC wall wart?
just continuously charge/use electricity without any "shut-off" mechanism.

And, of course, that isn't the proper manner to change NiMH (nor Li-ion) ...

Didn't hear much after that change eight or so years ago.

As I recall the FT 60 E, that is the European version, didn’t make the change.

this is not the original pack, nor is it a Yaesu pack, correct?

This is the Yaesu pack?

OK - One at a time - but both exhibiting weirdness. Is that AC wall wart charger plugged into a switched outlet? (Hey - I ?have done it myself ... All's charging OK, then I step out of the home office and turn the light switch off ... (grin).)

For a third-party pack to fail in 18 months is rather quick. Is it NiMH, too?

The original Yaesu pack: Are you original owner of the radio and that battery?

>> ...?When using the alkaline battery pack I get 9v and works good.

Great. Turn your TX power down to 2W and save on battery longevity. (If you aren't making it at 2W line-of-sight?
with a good antenna, you probably won't make it at 4-5W.

Have either of the packs been opened up/played with?

What reads 12VDC? ?The window on the radio when turned on.

What reads 12VDC? The window on the radio when turned on, I even checked the charger with a meter to ensure it has 12v output

this is not the original pack, nor is it a Yaesu pack, correct?? Replacement battery #1, not from Yaesu

The original Yaesu pack: Are you original owner of the radio and that battery? Yes, Original owner

Have either of the packs been opened up/played with? No, both original battery and replacement battery show no sign of damage

Purchased FT-60R new May 2009, came with side plug-in battery charger, worked well for years.

Well, darn, Steve. Thanks for all your answers ...

Proper charging of good-quality NiMH packs should result in more than 500 discharge-charge?
cycles.

I just don't know why you're experiencing the problems you are. Submit a ticket to Yaesu and see?
what notes they may have.

In order to charge the battery pack from the FT-60 there needs to be 3 terminals on the top of the pack where it connects the the radio.? If there are only 2 terminals you won't be able to charge the pack from the radio.? If you look at the newer FT-60s compared to the old ones the missing 3rd terminal on the bottom of the radio is why you can't charge batteries, even the old ones, from the radio.? New replacement packs from 3rd parties may not have the charging terminal.

The car “charger” is not a charger it is designed to run the radio. Some wall chargers are the same way. If I recall correctly to actually charge the battery you need about 13.8 volts.

Look at the ring tip of the charger, it probably broke off in the charge port.?
