Hi Chuck,
I also had battery troubles in my FT-60R recently purchased.? The stock battery performed like your battery 1, but would work for a while if I set the transmitter to low power.? I ripped it open and found 6 NiMH AA cells tabbed together in series.? After charging and load testing, I found that 4 of those cells are good; the other two take a charge but self-discharge after just a couple days.? I bought 2 flat Li-Po cells to put in that case.? I plan to charge them with a simple charger regulated at 8.4V with a resistor to limit the charge current.? It won't charge quickly, but will charge fully that way.? My FT-60R also came with an enclosure containing individual NiMH cells.? Some of those cells turned out to discharge themselves over a week or two.? So I'll supplement the 4 good ones from the original pack with 2 others that are able to hold their charge.
Cheers,
