Hello Clifton member and fellow radio friends,

After three days with the upper decks being closed due to threat of bad WX today all the deck furniture has been untied and the decks are open. Hoorah!

So I will be back on the air on 12m & 15m again WX permitting as we have some very wet and windy conditions ahead.

Look for us around 24.906, 24.965 ( note change due local hetrodyne on 24.960) and 21058, 21285 all allowing for QRM.

Our current position is approx 100miles off Nantucket heading north to East Port Maine wher we arrive tomorrow.

Today I will probably start on 15m and move to 12m as conditions change..........We are still four hours behind GMT

Hello Friends,

We have just left Newport Maine where we spent most of the day swathed in thick fog we are now heading south to New York.

Tomorrow we have a sea-day, but are having seek shelter at Martha's Vineyard from storm Philippe that is approaching from the Caribbean with expected 60/70 mph winds over the deck. As we operate on the open deck these conditions will very likely prevent any radio 'activity'.

Today after a days cycling in very foggy damp conditions we manged a few very good contacts into both the UK and the west coast of the USA before the penetrating wet forced us close.

We will keep you posted as to progress and likely operating times.

Hello Gang,

We are currently off the coast of Nova Scotia about 200miles from Halifax which is our next port of call, we set to arrive today at 4pm local time.........

Much delayed by the storms in the Atlantic and having to divert northwards to allow a helicopter from Newfoundland to 'medi-vac' a passenger. We witnessed a superb piece helicopter flying and extraction by the Canadian rescue service.

We have sea day tomorrow as we head to Boston arriving there on Thursday 10th Oct.

We have had some truly solid contacts on both 12m & 15m to the UK both in CW & SSB between 1500 & 1900 GMT........Also managed to work members of the Halifax radio club running their station (VA1MMA) at the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic..........Thanks to a sterling effort by their chairman Gordon VE1GVY and his team.

Today we will be on or near 24.906 and 24.960 with 21.058 and 21285 as a secondary later as 12m closes (after1700GMT)

We are hoping we don't have to dismantle our station before arriving in Boston this all depends on the US Homeland Security.

We will keep you posted as to the situation and progress.

Hello Clifton ARS members and fellow radio friends.

Today (30th Sept) we finally got on the air after spending several hours resonating the G-Whip antenna, this entailed climbing up and down between decks several dozen times from where we operate on deck 10 to deck 12 where the antenna is situated ………..The procedure took about 4 hours to complete.

We are now 1200 miles east of Halifax NS. We are due to arrive in Halifax on 3rd Oct.

Tomorrow we should be on the radio, from about 1300hrs GMT………..Today 15m & 12m were productive our preferred frequencies will be 24.906 Mhz and 24,960. And if 15m is not too cluttered with strong contest signals 21.058 or 21.285

As the day progresses and if the band conditions allow we will QSY to 20m on 14.058 and 14.285 around 1800gmt we may be found on 30m on 10,116.

All frequencies may be +/- due to local QRM

Unfortunately 17m is very difficult due to ship bourn QRM making it un-useable …………

Among today’s contacts we worked Colin G0UJK on 12m CW

We look forward to working you over the next three weeks.

Hello Clifton ARS members and fellow radio friends,

Just to let you know the memsahib and I currently 400miles from Portsmouth into our voyage to Halifax Nova Scotia. Currently we are suffering the effects of a deep depression known as 'Storm Agnes' with 60 to 70 knot winds over the deck. Our present course is 234 degrees with a speed of 15knts as we head directly into the wind and a 7 to 8mtr swell.

The good news is that today we have been given permission to operate our radio by the captain Darin Bowland the master of the Spirit of Discovery.

However, we will not be able to deploy our antenna etc. until the WX improves. We believe the storm is set to moderate over next 24 hrs.

Rest assured we will keep you posted as to our progress and when our radio ops will commence.

Whatho Gang,

We were in Lisbon today, and spent the most the day cycling along River Tagus the rest of the day dismantling and packing the bikes, which left no time for radio.

We are now about 20miles off the west coast of Portugal heading due north at a speed of 15knts.

Tomorrow (29th) will be our last day of radio ops from the ship before we remove the antenna and associated cabling as we head into the Bay of Biscay

Again we will be on 14.058 or 14.175 and move up as the propagation allows to 21.058 & 21.175 then on to 24.906 or 24.960. Of course weather permitting.

On the previous day of ops (27th) we worked Colin G0UJK, Terry M0TNE and Steve M0BPQ , Steve was working cross mode sending CW to our SSB...........These and many other QSOs were on 24Mhz.

Sorry we can't be specific about times but conditions are changing rapidly and unexpectedly.

Whatho Gang,

We are currently in port at Barcelona and just about to launch ourselves on an extended cycle ride along the coast.

We are also in port tomorrow in Toulon.

When in port we will only be on the air from mid to late afternoon whilst on sea-days we should be on most of the day.

Our next sea day is on Friday 24th.

On our first operating day (18th) the condx was amazing with both 15 and more so on 12m. On 12 I worked into the Americas , South Africa, the far east, together with many contacts into the UK, including two mobiles.

Then next day the bands were totally different, I believe there was a CME + solar flare I could only hear a few very weak signals from central Europe mainly Russians and struggled to work anyone. Things have improved over the past two days but are nothing like the amazing propagation on the 18th..............

So on sea days I will be on all day again working the usually frequencies 24.906 24.960.........21.058 21.175 14.058 14.175 even 10.116 if there is no activity on other bands

A message for Colin G0UJK .......Sorry old man I didn't hear you for the reasons above or even the Russian stn calling me.

At the time I was desperately trying to find a band that was in anyway open.

My next full sea day is Friday and then we have one more day that will be Monday 27th we will be dismantling the station on 28th.

Please bear in mind I will be on during the afternoon during port days

Whatho Cliftonaires,

?

Just a note to thank all those who tried to contact us on the wireless whilst the memsahib and I were on our nautical meanderings. I did hear and work (just) both Colin G0UJK and Steve M0BPQ.? Our biggest problem was extremely fast and deep QSB. Signals would swing from fully readable to non-existent in a matter of minutes. Also the most useful band of 17m was not available to us due very high levels of ship generated QRM. We strongly suspect the source of this wideband noise was the aft galley that served the Verandah Grill (open air restaurant ) on deck 12 adjacent to where our antenna was situated.

?

To keep a low profile and not to spread alarm and despondency among our fellow passengers Suzanne and I try and discreetly run out the 62ft of RG58 between deck 12 and our operating position on deck 11. This normally carried out while the ship is still in the English Channel or the Bay of Biscay as most passengers find the weather and sea conditions unfriendly enough to prevent them venturing out on deck. We now are well-practised at routing the cable, deploying the counterpoises and fixing the antenna. So we were a little concerned after deploying the feeder we found we had a fault and the antenna analyser was showing an open circuit. The weather was worsening so we delayed replacing the feeder with our fall-back two sections of cable until the following day. Up next morning before the majority had emerged we quickly removed some 40 cable ties.(white to match the railing) and re-run two lengths now joined to give 62ft with the SO239 coupler bound with self-amalgamating tape. While we so engaged when Simon, the ships Safety Officer (A Master Mariner two grades below the Captain) came to see how we were getting on. He asked if we needed any help, we politely declined explaining we had a faulty cable but all should be well. Fortunately we are very well accepted and liked by the crew on board who are more than willing to render assistance should we need it.

?

It was somewhat disappointing that conditions were not in our favour especially when I know that Colin G0UJK made every effort via the SDR system to locate me and when he did we struggled. Radio is quite amazing, we had? over 450 QSO in the log, a good number were surprising good in duration and quality both in CW and SSB from the middle of the Atlantic and the Caribbean Sea. One section of my log shows a ZS1, then VE6,to KH7, and to top it all a VK4 all quality QSOs in SSB, two of the stations were running a basic 100w to wire antennas.

I also noted that we worked a number of stations in the mid-western USA? many of whom had returned to hobby after several years absence, many of whom were running very basic stations or QRP and I was their first ‘maritime mobile’ since being first licenced. We? also worked several stations in the UK at odd times when conditions gave a true ‘arm-chair copy’. Strangely working the same station on the same frequency at a similar time the following day? the contact would only last a few minutes before the band dropped out. This was likely due to the fact we had travelled some 450miles in 24hrs and conditions were different? There were many times when I would call CQ to an apparent ‘dead band’ and suddenly I would get a single response with 59+ reports both ways on both 12m and 15m, during these short openings I worked into Ghana, Namibia, Brazil, Iraq and Western coast of Canada……….Then the band would then die.

?

Strange business this radio!

?

I would like to thank Lawrie G4FAA for circulating my MM Group e-mails to the Clifton Reflector for the benefit of all.

?

The MM group (addressed to Suzanne and then BCC) has a number of non-Clifton members including individuals who I have worked on previous nautical meanderings. Hence we felt it was a more effective option than using the G3GHN reflector. Also we? experienced some difficulty gaining access to BT mail via the ship’s satellite link. We found it beneficial to stay ’logged-in’ to our one main e-mail address to avoid several hours anguish as we struggled to re-connect and of course we were using the BT account for other purposes than the /MM Group.

?

During the trip I received some reports that my trusty KX3, now in its 8th year of service, was off frequency by some 0.6Khz HF on some bands. I tried to compensate by using the XIT control but this was not very satisfactory as ‘shift’ in the frequency display is rather distracting on keying up. Hopefully this annoying but minor fault will be rectified before our next /MM ops.

?

As a result of our activities on board we handed out in excess of 350 information leaflets. These explained who we were and what we were doing (with the Captain’s permission) to both those who were genuinely interested, as well as those who had ‘concerns’ that we would affect the ship’s navigation and communication systems………….We are certain that the more sceptical among them were never convinced and blamed us for the short falls in the ship’s WiFi………We endeavoured to act as ambassadors for the hobby and we feel we succeeded with most.

?

We have taken the opportunity to attached some photos showing our operating position, the G-whip antenna, the bespoke marine grade stainless tip-over antenna bracket. also a copy of our information hand-out (this in draft size, we cut four from an A4 sheet).

?

You may be interested to know that our ‘packing list’ for both the radio and our cycling activities ran into over 200 separate items before we even considered what we were going to wear!

?

As we embark in the UK we did not have a luggage weight limit. Our total luggage was in excess of 110kgs (four large suit cases (two with bikes, spares, tool kits and cabling) , two wheeled flight bags, two back-packs, a Peli-case (KX3+gel cells) and a fishing rod case (G-whip antenna).

?

Once again many thanks to all those who tried to contact us, and may we take this belated opportunity to wish all Clifton members a very healthy, happy and peaceful 2023.

?

Happy New Year from the Atlantic Ocean we are 900 miles NE of Barbados where we spent New Year's Day and cycled 32 miles up the west coast of the island. with temp around 28c in heavy tropical rain showers we got just a little moist Hi!

We now have five more days at sea before our next port of call at the Azores. I hope to be on the radio for most of the time as the weather should be kind enough as we operate on the open deck. Once we leave the Azores we may only get a single day to operate as the weather worsens and we have to take down our antenna and feeder etc. Also dismantle and pack away our bicycles in preparation for disembarkation. on 12th January.

We are now three hours behind GMT I will again be on the previous listed frequencies 14.225 14.058........ 21.225, 21.058.........24.960. 24.906 28.365 28.058 Near dusk I may move to 10.116 I am likely to be on 10m & 12m during our midday at about 1500GMT...if conditions allow but nothing is certain.

For nautical among you our current position is 19.5N & 51 .2 W on a course of 51 degrees with speed of 17knts into a NE wind at 30knts

Hope to catch on the wireless!

First time hearing tony With good signal but theres a catch!

Found tony tonight with the reverse network beacon put his call in and found him on 21.048.2 he is always off spot freq? slightly. anyway tried about 5 different sdr recievers from trinidad/bonaire to canary islands including many up the usa coastline . Then bingo i heard him 55 to57 working va3cwt gabe short for gabriel, he told him the name of the ship which of course i had a coughing fit so only got "the spirit of ?? and he was 400miles north of barbados that he was running 5watts qrp with a vertical on board the ship It was the best i have heard him, but i knew there was no conditions to work him from my tx at 21.00 hours. However I called a few times but no answer and i was unable to hear my own signal in the sdr , something i can normally do when conditions are good. The sdr i found him on was kx4az/a in athens Georgia. But you still need to know where he is transmitting if anyone wants to try it late afternoon /evening. so you need to find him on the RNB spotter first ! it was thrilling to read his morse without all the hash and qrm, shame I didnt get back to him today. world of recievers and transmitters is good for finding the sdr across the world . Cheers everyone and Happy new Year.

Ps had a nice chat with martin gd3zzn yesterday on 40mtrs an ex clifton membe,r b4 clifton was at new cross pub and possibly the church too, he spoke of some large shops/house three storey near brockley cross i think he was refering too, where the club was first sited, he spoke of jackey and clive remissing when clive was g8. ???

Re: Sked arrangements

Hi All
Been interested in Steve and Colin talking about them using the RBN network. Having not been on for some time I am not familiar with this network. Would anyone provide with any information on how this works and how you use the system.

Hi All,

I have just had a very scratchy contact with Tony on 15m. He was 319 at best. I could see him on the waterfall, but even with a 250Hz filter, it was tough going. I was running my linear and a 4 el yagi on a 10m long boom. I was altered by setting an alarm in the "VE7CC cluster user" software. This makes a screen pop up when the RBN found Tony, first on 10, then on 12 and finally on 15m where I could just detect him. Give it a try if you need to find someone (or somewhere) in particular.

I think even JKY would have struggled to have a full QSO at the signal strengths involved. I wonder how well you heard me, Tony? Sorry for calling with fast cw, I forgot to turn the keyer down.....

Cheers
