Absent friends
Whatho Gang! One of the many topics discussed on the 80m impromptu net held on 12th March was that of “absent friends”. Among the gathered company of Colin (G0UJK), Lawrie (G4FAA), Keith (G4TJE), Peter (G7ULL) and myself. Questions were raised of as to the wellbeing and location of old friends and acquaintances. As a result I later received the following from Colin. Hi Tony, I have just come off the phone from a sprightly 83 year old RFC. He does get your e-mails still but his antenna broke and only has 40mtr vertical. He explained that he has daily phone contacts with G8CCL in Essex and that he is very active on DMR working the United States stations. He did ask after many op's from the twins, Clive and too many to mention. And did confirm about one or two having moved locations. He is aware that Mark G0GQT is into many contest's and that Keith G4TJE is back local to me. He also said that musician Pete G0NGP has moved to Littlehampton, and I told him that last I heard Ian G0PDZ was in the Margate area. An Important notice to all, is that he is using the G3GHN club call sign during his on air activities. all in all we had a 20min QSO and I asked him to keep in touch, as many had asked after him. Good news to hear Steve is well, and still about on the radio, even if it's only DMR! Feel free to repost this regards Colin So there you have it, just one topic from the recent net led to some tenacious enquiries by Colin that resulted in some reassuring information regarding old Clifton acquaintances…………. Watch out for news of future impromptu Clifton Country Club nets during the spring. Possibly 40m may be a better option with the longer daylight hours. Catch you on the wireless! 73 de Tony es Suzanne

Last evening's 80m net
Hello Gang, Just a note concerning last evening’s 80m impromptu net. Firstly to thank, Colin G0UJK, Lawrie G4FAA, Keith G4TJE and Peter G7ULL for turning up on a very crowded and noisy band for fairly relaxed and extensive natter. Unfortunately both Colin and I had overlooked that we were clashing with the RSGB Club’s CW Contest. My thanks to Bob G4DBW, Peter G3RQZ and Mark G0GQT who were taking part in this very popular contest for letting me know the reason for their non-appearance. With any future net dates rest assured we will consult the contest calendar and give more than a few days’ notice. Catch you on the wireless! 73 de Tony es Suzanne.

Impromptu natter on 80m?
5
Whatho Gang! Colin (G0UJK) and I have been mulling over the idea of an impromptu net on 80m (3.695 +/-) at 20:00hrs one evening. The sooner the better, so we thought this coming Wednesday 12th March would be a good as any date to hold it. Hope to catch you on the wireless! 73 de Tony es Suzanne

Maritime mobile in Bay of Biscay
last epistle from the voyagers! Sadly never got to work them myself although listening at times on 12 and 18m mostly during pm uk.No matter try again in May! best 73 all - de Lawrie g4faa ( feb Begin forwarded message: From: Tony Cadney G0HUZ <tonycadney@...> Date: 22 February 2025 at 13:21:10 GMT To: Suzanne Cadney G0LUZ <suzanne.cadney@...> Subject: Maritime mobile in Bay of Biscay ? Hello Friends and Radio Ops. We are now 150miles off the coast of Portugal on heading 36 Degs and due into Portsmouth on Monday 24th Feb. We have been at sea for seven days since leaving Bermuda as we tracked a violent storm some 150miles north of us. We ran along the 32nd parallel before changing to a north easterly course approximately 250miles off the coast of Africa. Suzanne and I removed the antenna feeder and counterpoises late on the afternoon of 20th Feb. Again this was not for the faint hearted with 45knt winds across the deck as we crawled on hands and knees removing the 70+ cable ties and releasing the stainless steel clamps that support our antenna. During these operations the ship was pitching and rolling in such a manner such we dare not put anything down and expect it to stay. During the two months on board we made many very interesting contacts the most memorable have been those with ‘simple stations’ 100w to a wire dipole or end-fed. Conditions at sea and in the lower latitude are never as predicted and “Mid-day drop out” caused by solar noise is noticeable in the extreme. We would like to thank all those tenacious individuals who searched the bands for our very weak signal and secured a QSO, albeit plagued with QSB. Namely: Colin G0UJK, Peter G7ULL Robert G4TUK, Steve M0BPQ, Terry M0TNE and Scott M0BLH. Strangely there often times when our 5w of CW or 7,5w of SSB produced arm-chair copies in both directions One station In Seattle California commented “Holy Moses you have got to be kidding me, 7.5watts off the coast of Africa” The recipient had IC 7300 with 100w to an end fed in his back yard. A similar situation occurred on the last day of operating (20th Feb) on 12mtrs 500miles SW of the Azores. I was working into the Mid USA (Ohio) one minute only to called by a MW0 station in Port Talbot the next. Both were SSB contacts that lasted over 15 minutes and were solid both ways. With both stations running no more than 100w to inverted ‘L’ wires or similar. Unfortunately, conditions rapidly deteriorated before we had a chance to alert the /MM group by e-mail. The fascinating aspect of operating on a ship that is underway is that the conditions one day are not often repeated the next day especially on the higher frequencies. Also the many stations that recall working us before as ‘maritime mobile’ over the past 10 years. We are next /MM in May when we will be heading towards the Mediterranean and Croatia. Hope to work you then if not before! 73 de Tony es Suzanne.

hi gang- latest from Tony HUZ noe enroute to the Azores .still not hheard them ( poor prop) but hope to do so before they land in UK on feb 24th.. 73 all Lawrie G4 faa ( monday) ---------- Forwarded message --------- From: <tony.cadney@...> Date: Mon, 17 Feb 2025 at 14:51 Subject: Mid Atlantic To: Suzanne Cadney G0LUZ <suzanne.cadney@...> Hello friends & fellow radio ops. We are now almost in the mid North Atlantic for navigators among you 31.1N & 48.5W on a heading of 88.5 degs. (locator sq. GM51MA) On way to the Azores with 18knts of speed. WX here is typical for this region, cloudy moderate wind from the west (20knts) and 16/18C. Radio wise 12m & 15m have been fairly productive with 17 being used as the other bands close. A lack of European and UK stations has been noticeable, however this should improve as we move east and the time difference is less we are now only 3 hours behind GMT with another time change tonight. I will be on 12, 15 and 17m today depending on what activity we find. Appears to be the best time for N. Europeans & UK 1600 to 1800 GMT Other wise we have had some super contacts into the far reaches of US & Canada as well as the Pacific including Japan & ZL. Especially stations using very basic set ups of end fed wire antennas & 100w or often much less. We are scheduled to arrive in the Azores on 20th after that we will be dismantling the antenna and cabling in order to start the packing of the radio kit, bicycles, and associated tools & spares. Before we tackle the clothes etc. for our scheduled return to the UK on 24th. We still hope to work you soon, 73 de Tony es Suzanne

To: Suzanne Cadney G0LUZ <suzanne.cadney@...> Hello fellow radio ops, Having left Belize (V3) yesterday (31/1) we had a sea day today as we headed north to Progresso, Mexico where we arrive tomorrow (2/2). Today we worked into the UK, Poland, France and Italy on 12mtrs CW and Norway and Holland 12m SSB. As well as numerous in the USA in both modes on 10m,12m and 17m. We seem to have a path on 12m into UK & Europe around 1600 to 1700 GMT. Colin (G0UJK) heard me during this time, as I tried to break-in to a QSO between Mark M0JCF and a US stn. Tomorrow (2/2) we hope to go cycling in the morning and get on the air in the afternoon around 1900hrs. The following day we have another sea-day as we head towards Galveston Texas. Please note this sea-day will be the last operating day as we have been told to remove our antenna whilst in US jurisdiction and will only be allowed to re-establish the antenna after leaving Miami our last US port on 11th Feb. This is due to the presence of US Homeland Security personnel on board who are set to examine this British registered ship with a fine toothed comb. This also includes stopping any of the ship’s crew going ashore (even to assist the less than able passengers down the gang-way) in the three US ports to prevent them absconding. To stopping the use of freshly made yogurt, as all milk products have to be in single use cartons as well as banning buffet service as all food must be delivered to the point of consumption by serving personnel…………I will not make any further comment! The end result is that the memsahib and I will be off the air from about 2200 hrs on Monday 3rd Feb until 2300hrs on Tuesday 11th Feb. So we hope catch you on the wireless on 3rd Feb before our enforced shut down. 73 fer nw de Tony es Suzanne.

We are now four hours behind GMT so the earliest I normally commence ops at about 1400hrs GMT. As I stated before the propagation is totally different in the tropical zone, with chronic solar ‘drop-out’ around noon. Yesterday the “WWA stns” were working on 285. We did manage to contact our dear friend Terry M0TNE on 21.275 albeit it was a bit of struggle due failing conditions. Date: 15 January 2025 at 12:40:33 GMT To: Suzanne Cadney G0LUZ <suzanne.cadney@...> Subject: Mid Atlantic ? Hello fellow radio ops, The memsahib and I are now 1200miles west of the African coast with about 1900miles to go before our next port of Bridgetown Barbados on Sunday. We are on a course of 238 degrees at 18knts. Present location is 22.7N 35.1W Locator square: HL22NT (Plenty more rare locators to come) WX is fair with calm seas (3mts swell) the ambient temperature is 24c. My thanks to Colin G0UJK and Peter G7ULL for their recent QSOs after following me round the bands on the RBN. Also to Scott M0BLH from Norwich who just started calling CQ 18.132 MHz as I tuned up from 18.130 MHz, Scott is a regular user of my local the 2mtr repeater in Norwich and is on our /MM mailing list. Our problem is finding a band which has ideal propagation. It is very different from the predicted conditions back in the UK, more so when you are at sea in the middle of the Atlantic. To add to the confusion, we keep changing time zones the ship’s time is now 2 hours behind GMT. Today we will be starting around 1300hrs GMT on 15m around 21.058 or 21.285. Then later on 24.906 or 24.950 later in the afternoon we may try 18085 or 18.130. If time allows we may move to 10.116 Mhz as Colin would like the opportunity of a 30m contact. All frequencies are +/- 5Khz Do check the Reverse Beacon Network as an indication of which band we are working. Sorry I cannot be time specific as every day seems to bring a new set of conditions. When we change bands I or Suzanne have go up to deck12 and change the resonating coil on the antenna which situated on the edge of an open air restaurant………This sometimes causes some alarm and despondency among our fellow passengers………..And requires some delicate handling and presents an opportunity to console the worried parties with our explanatory leaflets. It all takes time so a quick band change can take more than half an hour if we are challenged. Hope to catch you on the wireless. 73 de Tony es Suzanne. PS. Please note we are using both BT & G-mail as BT is becoming less reliable.

DATA AFS M0BPQ:
5
Hi All, Hope you're all well. Just finished in the RSGB DATA AFS Contest where I worked Steve (M0BPQ) but unfortunately missed Bob (G4DBW). Perhaps someone can tell me if the Clifton ARS still exists on the RSGB list of clubs. I noticed, and read of Steve's success in the 2 Meter trophy, crediting his points to the Clifton club, who are still listed on the VHF page. When I looked for the Clifton on the HF page of clubs, they don't seem to be there. Steve, are you uploading your log, and will it be credited to Clifton ARS. As if you are, then I will add my 187 contacts to that as well. Hope you read this in time as logs need uploading by midnight Monday night. Tony and Suzanne, hope to work you soon. HNY to all. Best Regards. Mark G0GQT.

We are currently about 170NM north-east of Madeira on a heading of 204Degs. with a speed of18knts This meant that this afternoon (11/1) we were able to get back on the air. To our very pleasant surprise we found that 17m was in very good shape. Our first tentative calls in CW brought an immediate response from SM6CUK and LY1ZU. I was later called by Colin G0UJK and QSY'd to SSB on 18.132 Mhz with solid copy both ways. At the end of the QSO with Colin at about 17.30 I was called by Larry VO1FOG in Newfoundland again cracking signals both ways. It looks very much as if we are back on the air. Tomorrow we are in port at Funchal (CT3) arriving at 8am, we intend to get on the radio during the afternoon. We should be on the wireless by about 1500GMT look for us on 17m 18.085 +/- or 18.130 +/-. We will be leaving Funchal at about 17.30 Hrs to cross the the Atlantic with six sea days before reaching Barbados on Sunday 19th January.. As we move away from the 'shadow' of Madeira's landmass the paths to US and Canada also Northern Europe should improve. On seas days we should be found on 24.960 or 24.906 earlier in the day. Once we have a better idea of propagation we will post possible sked frequencies and times. Catch you on the wireless. 73 de Tony es Suzanne

Hi gang----message 2 from Tony huz and co de g4faa ( sat eve) HNY alll! ---------- Forwarded message --------- From: <tony.cadney@...> Date: Sat, 28 Dec 2024 at 18:43 Subject: A day at sea To: Suzanne Cadney G0LUZ <suzanne.cadney@...> Hello fellow radio ops, Tomorrow we have a sea day as we will be on way to Arrecife Lanzarote and we hope to be on the radio most of the day weather permitting. Unfortunately although we have already had a number of QSOs on differing bands we have not been able to formulate enough data on the propagation to make fixed schedules. This partly because most of our operating time has been whilst in port with ship moored in very close to very high ground and mountainous areas which screened clear paths to the horizon. Making operating difficult, as Colin G0UJK will testify to. We intend to start on 18Mhz then move up to 21Mhz and on to 24Mhz. Best to check the Reverse Beacon Network to find what band we are working. If conditions allow we will QSY to SSB frequencies 18.130 , 21.285, & 24.950.........All these will be +/- 5khz..........Sorry we can't be more accurate. We will now be working our way back to the UK slowly via Lanzarote, Madeira then Lisbon then crossing the Atlantic to the Caribbean and Central America......So plenty of rare squares to work over several weeks.
