Daniel Families from Pitt, Greene, Edgecombe, and Wilson Counties in North Carolina
6
Are any of you researching John Henry Daniel, Sr. (1801-1873) of Greene and Edgecombe Counties in NC? He was a Primitive Baptist Elder and his ancestors were Stephen Parker Daniel (1774-1840), Joseph Daniel (1730-1800), Simon Daniel (1678-1763), Hugh Daniel (d. 1700), and Thomas Daniel. I have another Daniel line from Pitt County: Captain Robert Lanier Daniel (1718-1794) who was born in Chowan Precinct in NC and died in Pitt County, and his ancestors were Thomas Daniel, Sr. (1686-1749) who was born in Barbados, married Elizabeth Jean Lanier from Prince George County, VA, and they both died in Tyrrell County, NC. Any information will be appreciated. -- Liz Sparrow

Rowan NC Daniel's

Was wondering if anyone is or has researched the Josiah Daniel b 1756 d. 1830 in Rowan NC. ? He appears to be fairly closely associated with the John and Alleck (Alexander) Daniel who are possibly connected to the William Daniel (Anne) of Brunswick who died in 1786. In a court case in dated 1883 the children of his daughter Pallaton who married George Lagle sued Josiah Daniel jr over a parcel of land , Josiah jr's response to the complaint included all of Josiah sr's children, those being Betsy , Slivie (Silvia) , Polly , Sally, Pally (Pallaton), William , Annie , Zadoc and of course Josiah jr. It is not clear what the relationship between Josiah and John and Alleck is, anyone have any insight ?

Daniel family of Rowan County,

Hello Jack, Is there anything else you can add to the theory that Peter Daniel Sr of Crab Louse, had a son named Ambrose? This Peter is thought to be a brother to John Daniel Sr, also of Crab Louse. This John has been tested and is tightly related to the Waqua Creek Daniel brothers. The point? A Reese Daniel of Brunswick , married to Rebecca Gee, has now been tested and he is also tightly related to John, of Crab, and the Waqua guys. The father of Reese died when Reese was young. Reese is said to have gone to live with his uncle in Halifax.

Daniel Family of Mecklenburg Co.,. VA
Hello Group, I descend from Martin Daniel Sr (ca. 1752-1811) of Mecklenburg Co., VA though his son Martin Daniel Jr (ca. 1795-by 1845). I was wondering if anyone knew who the William Daniel belonged to who wrote his will in 1780 and was probated in 1782. In his will, he names his wife Margaret, sons Thomas, William, and John Daniel, as well as daughters Milly Toone and Sally Wall. Based on the wording of the will, it's apparent that William Daniel did not name all of his children in his will. Checking Mecklenburg Co,.VA Personal Property Tax Lists, there appears to only be one William Daniel in the lists....son of the William Daniel 1782 will. Could Revolutionary War Veteran William Powell (ca. 1755-1836) be the same William Daniel named in the Personal Property Tax Lists and the son of William and Margaret Daniel?? From YDNA, we find that a descendant of my Martin Daniel Sr through his son Stark Daniel, matches DNA with a descendant of William Powell Daniel (born circa 1808). This is only at the 37 marker level so a much more deeper test is needed as well as additional participants. Researchers have concluded that this William Powell Daniel (b 1808) was a son of Walter and Jean Finch Puryear Daniel and this Walter Daniel was a son of William Powell Daniel (1755-1836) the elder. Now....William Powell Daniel Sr (1755-1836) and my Martin Daniel Sr (ca. 1752-1811) both named sons Walter Daniel. Researchers have each claimed that "their" Walter Daniel was the one that married Jean Finch Puryear. I think the fact that the Walter Daniel who married Jean Finch Puryear ends up in close proximity to where William Powell Daniel the elder died in 1836 (Coffee Co., TN) leads me to believe that he was the son of William Powell Daniel the Elder....not my Martin Daniel Sr. IF SO....I have no idea what may have happened to my Martin Daniel Sr's son Walter Daniel after being named in his father's 1811 will. SO....IF William Powell Daniel (1755-1836) the Elder is the same William Daniel named in the Mecklenburg Co., VA Personal Property Tax Lists....and he is the son of William Daniel whose will was probated in 1782 in Mecklenburg....and his descendants share YDNA with descendants of my Martin Daniel Sr....and it appears William Daniel didn't name all of his children in his 1780 will.....IS it POSSIBLE...that my Martin Daniel Sr was also a son?? Or at the least a close relative?? I realize there is no clearcut paper trail to prove it either way....I'm just trying to come up with possibilities. THanks in advance for your help and look forward to continuing this discussion... Charlie Rathbun

John Daniel b.1623 of Over Tabley and Barbados

Hi William, There is an authoritative report from a professional genealogist in the UK regarding the line of William Daniel who married Dorothy Forth but as far as I am aware nothing authoritative has been published regarding the descendants of Thomas Danyers. That William Daniel was from the Over Tabley family, though. That does not mean that there is no authoritative work on this topic, I am just not aware of any such documented research. What is your interest in this line? I have a copy of the report regarding William Daniel and Dorothy Forth, which concluded that there was no connection to William Daniel of Middlesex County, VA to the Over Tabley Daniels and that none of the children of Willam and Dorothy Forth Daniel immigrated to America. I think the report concluded that that line became extinct with the children of William Daniel, but it has been 20 years since I read the report, so I do not trust my memory on that. I only have a hard copy of that report and it is in storage. I am in the process of moving so will eventually get to that set of file cabinets which are in storage. The misinformation about a connection between the Over Tabley Daniels and Middlesex, VA Daniels is still widely circulated, so I should publish this report so it is not lost. The report was generated at the request of two wealthy Daniel brothers in Washington, D.C. who hired professional genealogists in the U.S. and U.K. in an attempt to prove the ancestry of William Daniel of Middlesex. Their genealogists failed in the attempt but generated some very good research based on primary records. Both brothers were elderly at the time I corresponded with them and are now deceased. I received my copy of the report from them. One of the brothers was among the early participants in the Daniel Y DNA Project in 2002-3. The Y DNA of the line of William Daniel of Middlesex, County, VA has long since been proved using primary record research and Y DNA testing. A descendant of the Chesire Daniel family is participating in the Daniel Y DNA Project but has had no matches to anyone else in the project. The Y DNA of this line cannot, however, be considered proved since there is only one proved participant from this line in the project. To prove a Y DNA line, direct male descendants from two sons of the suspected ancestor must first be proved using primary records and then tested and match on a Y DNA test. Kevin

DNA Haplogroup

Hello, I finally got my Y DNA results. I did the 37 marker test through Family Tree DNA. My haplogroup came back as I-P37. I'm not sure what to do with this information now. There is a list of people who also are matches for the same haplogroup. Can someone help me understand how to use this info to determine my correct ancestry?

John Daniel in pamiller Tranquility

Hello, I believe John Daniel, to be my 7th Great Grandfather. Due to our family having only one Daniel male and can't be found, we are not able to do a Y DNA. My Great Aunt Virginia Daniel has done a test and has helped in confirming our Daniel tree. Now the ever present issue, who was his father? John's son Martin, spent his adult life in Mecklenburg Co, VA. Martin's children were John Walker, Stark, Elizabeth, Sarah, Milley, Wiley, Mary & Martin Jr. Martin Jr married Avarilla Yancey, children Stith, Thomas, Margaret, Dolly, Zachariah, Nancy, Stephen, Terresa & James. Pam also states that John's brother William passed BY 7 May 1882. There are two William Daniel who passed that year. One in Mecklenburg Co, VA But I don't want to assume that the William Pam speaks of is from Mecklenburg. As you can see, some the children's names match others here in group. Any tips and info is appreciated. Thanks Kathy Virginia Daniel FTDNA kit # B809010

Pam Miller's Middlesex County, Virginia Daniel research data access
Pam Miller's extensive, well researched and documented web site is down and it is uncertain if it will be maintained in the future. There are two ways to access some or all of Pam's data. First is a MS Word document compiled by a member of this list which contains Pam's work on the Y DNA of the Middlesex County, VA Daniel family. It is attached to this post. Second, the complete content of her site is available through the Internet Archive WayBack Machine, an online archive of web content. Pam Miller's Genealogy Web Site Pam's site contains/contained data about several surnames, including the Middlesex Daniels, and various other genealogy related data. The link above also provides access to the data included in the MS Word document. The direct link to Pam's main page on the WayBack Machine is: https://web.archive.org/web/20150704165039/http://home.comcast.net/~p.a.miller/genealogy/index.htm

Daniel DNA Web Site down

My hosting provider has suffered a storage system error due to a bug in their cloud software which caused data corruption in their back end database servers. All data is backed up, so no data has been lost, but the software bug also impacted their automated restore process so they have to manually do restores one server at a time. This is a time consuming process, but they are making significant progress and should be back on line soon. In the mean time, your data is available on your personal Family Tree DNA web site if you have an account. This is the first time in the eleven years that I have used this provider that they have had an issue that impacted the availability of their service, which is impressive. When our server is restored, I will send an update. Kevin

William Mack Daniel
10
It's great to see some conversation going on in the group. I thought I would jump it to ask (again) if anyone has information on William Mack Daniel's (1805-1890) family history. It would be great to find some male Daniel descendants, but I personally don't know anyone from this branch of my family. There seems to be a connection via DNA to Joseph (Job/Joab) Daniel's descendants, & many have William listed as Joseph's son in their trees. I have seen at least one person dispute this connection. William Mack Daniel was born in NC, married Eliza Ann Melton (1817-1904) in Tennessee (they lived in Lawrence County in 1850). They moved to Reynolds County, MO by 1860, then Sharp County, AR by 1870, then they were in Hot Spring County, AR, by 1880 & lived there the rest of his life. His partial biography is listed in the Daniel DNA Project with all the other participating families, but there is no Y-DNA kit associated with him. He & Eliza had seven children (all born in TN): Avis Caroline Daniel, Lucinda Jane Daniel, James M. Daniel, Phillip Wayne Daniel, William Mack Daniel, Jr., Mary Emma Daniel (my 2nd great grandmother), & John Henry Daniel. At least one son (Phillip) moved to the next county, Clark County, AR, & William Mack, Jr., moved to Texas. Mary Emma ended up in Oregon County, MO.

John Daniel 1730 to after 1765 of Essex/Caroline/Cumberland/Goochland, Virginia
3
I am looking for any information about John Daniel 25 June 1730 - after 1767 of Cumberland and Goochland Counties, VA. My ancestor, Thomas Daniel 1750-1825, was probably the son of John and Elizabeth Daniel of Essex/Caroline, Cumberland and Goochland Counties, VA. I say probably because during the Civil War most primary records in Caroline County and virtually all primary records in King & Queen County, Virginia were lost. The Daniel family lived in Caroline close to the King & Queen (and Essex) line and there are several indications they were in all three counties. The Daniel family of Caroline County, VA, which descends from William Daniel 1680-1765 of Essex and Caroline Counties, has been reconstructed by proving the Y DNA of descendants of three sons of William Daniel 1680-1765. Details of how this was done are available at: http://www.kevindaniel.x10.mx/carolinedanielsdna.html At any rate, Y DNA, residence patterns and naming patterns place my Thomas Daniel 1750-1825 as a descendant of William Daniel 1680-1765, and based on what can be proved and what is currently known of this family, he best fits as a son of John and Elizabeth Daniel. He named is first son John, second William and third Thomas. John was in Cumberland County in 1763 when he bought land from William Daniel. William Daniel bought this land in 1755 and in that deed he is described as "William Daniel of Caroline County". John and William were probably sons of Thomas Daniel 1707-1738 and Mary Rowzee. The full birth dates of their four sons (James b. 1728, John b. 1730, William b. 1732 and Thomas b. 1734) were given in guardianship records for these children associated with the estate of Thomas 1707-1738. John Daniel's guardian was his uncle, William Daniel Jr. 1705-1783, who also had a son John 1725-1799, so it is often difficult distinguish these two John's in Caroline County, VA court records, until John, son of Thomas 1707-1738, moved to Cumberland County. John and William Daniel 1732-1765 of Cumberland County, VA both sold their land in 1765 and left the county. John's wife Elizabeth and William's wife Patsy, released their dower rights (There were two unrelated William/Patsy Daniels in Cumberland at this time). In 1767, John Daniel traveled ("twice coming and returning 45 miles") back to Cumberland County to bear witness at a trial (William Watters vs William Davenport). John was compensated 320 lbs of tobaccos. The Cumberland County courthouse was at Mosby Tavern now in Powhatan County, VA in 1767. Charles Brunk Heinemann, in Daniel Families of the Southern States, placed William and John in Goochland, seemingly after leaving, Cumberland, but does not state how he made that conclusion. He was also convinced, just short of making the assignment, that the maiden name of John's wife Elizabeth was Lewis. John Daniel 1725-1799, my John's first cousin, was closely associated with the Lewis and Meriwether families. Again, Heinemann does not explain how he arrived at the conclusion that the maiden name of Elizabeth was Lewis. It really bugs me when people don't explain their reasoning! I wish CBH was still alive so I could give him a piece of my mind. CBH was a close collaborator of my father's first cousin, also a genealogist, but she never came close to making correct assignments for our Daniels, but that is another rant. Anyway..... Goochland records are locked on FamilySearch, so if anyone has transcriptions of Goochland records, knows about the Daniel families who were living there in the 1750s-1780s, please keep me in mind! Thanks! Kevin

Daniel/ Stith connections
6
Was just wondering if anyone knows of any family connection between the Daniel's ( Shelby county KY ) and the family name Stith. The reason for the question is using my dad's autosomal dna kit I have a couple of matches who appear to be sisters, that are apparent descendants of David Daniel b 1804 NC d abt 1870 LA, this David is also a y-dna match to me, when I go to shared matches with these sisters I get three males with the last name Stith( I know this dna could come from anywhere but so far I have not found any other connections dna wise). As mentioned my 4th GGrandfather lived in Shelby county KY , in the 1800 tax/census list was a Stith Daniel as well as a Thomas sr and Thomas jr. (it is not clear if these two were father and son ) , but it appears Thomas jr married a Forsythe woman and they had a son named Stith Daniel also. This Stith later moved to Johnson county IN. I was just wondering if anyone has researched this group or has any insights ?

Hello again, I wondered if you have an opinion on the accuracy of the info in Rappahannock Roots by Barbara Daniel Pickett: specifically her history of Capt William Daniel and her claims he was the son of Peter Daniel, Knight of Parliament and Capt. William was in charge of the citadel of Ayre, Scotland She also writes William was in a patent of Feb 26, 1653, to Thomas Hawkins and settled in northern Middlesex County that year. She further writes Capt William was married to Dorothy Forth of Wigan, Lancashire and had two sons, William and Robert, with her before 1665. Thanks Jack -- jlc

Chisley Daniel question
2
Hello My genealogy info is from P A Miller’s research. It shows I descend from Captain James Daniel who died in 1761 at his farm on the James River. My question concerns the name Chicheley, which I understand is connected to Sir Henry Chicheley who Captain William Daniel accompanied from England to Virginia. The first mention of Chicheley after that is Captain James, grandson of William, naming one of his sons by that names, which becomes Chisley/Chesley because of its pronunciation. John M. Daniel, James son, names one of his sons Chisely, and that Chisley passes the name on in my line. My question is if anyone has a Chisley in their line and if their understanding is the same as mine about the name being connected to Sir Henry Chicheley of Roswell, Middlesex County, Va. Thanks -- jlc
