I am looking for any information about John Daniel 25 June 1730 - after 1767 of Cumberland and Goochland Counties, VA.
My ancestor, Thomas Daniel 1750-1825, was probably the son of John and Elizabeth Daniel of Essex/Caroline, Cumberland and Goochland Counties, VA. I say probably because during the Civil War most primary records in Caroline County and virtually all primary records in King & Queen County, Virginia were lost. The Daniel family lived in Caroline close to the King? & Queen (and Essex) line and there are several indications they were in all three counties.
The Daniel family of Caroline County, VA, which descends from William Daniel 1680-1765 of Essex and Caroline Counties, has been reconstructed by proving the Y DNA? of descendants of three sons of William Daniel 1680-1765. Details of how this was done are available at:
At any rate, Y DNA, residence patterns and naming patterns place my Thomas Daniel 1750-1825 as a descendant of William Daniel 1680-1765, and based on what can be proved and what is currently known of this family, he best fits as a son of John and Elizabeth Daniel. He named is first son John, second William and third Thomas.
John was in Cumberland County in 1763 when he bought land from William Daniel. William Daniel bought this land in 1755 and in that deed he is described as "William Daniel of Caroline County". John and William were probably sons of Thomas Daniel 1707-1738 and Mary Rowzee. The full birth dates of their four sons (James b. 1728, John b. 1730, William b. 1732 and Thomas b. 1734)? were given in guardianship records for these children associated with the estate of Thomas 1707-1738.
John Daniel's guardian was his uncle, William Daniel Jr. 1705-1783, who also had a son John 1725-1799, so it is often difficult distinguish these two John's in Caroline County, VA court records, until John, son of Thomas 1707-1738, moved to Cumberland County.
John and William Daniel 1732-1765 of Cumberland County, VA both sold their land in 1765 and left the county. John's wife Elizabeth and William's wife Patsy, released their dower rights (There were two unrelated William/Patsy Daniels in Cumberland at this time). In 1767, John Daniel traveled ("twice coming and returning 45 miles") back to Cumberland County to bear witness at a trial (William Watters vs William Davenport). John was compensated 320 lbs of tobaccos. The Cumberland County courthouse was at now in Powhatan County, VA in 1767.
Charles Brunk Heinemann, in Daniel Families of the Southern States, placed William and John in Goochland, seemingly after leaving, Cumberland, but does not state how he made that conclusion. He was also convinced, just short of making the assignment, that the maiden name of John's wife Elizabeth was Lewis. John Daniel 1725-1799, my John's first cousin, was closely associated with the Lewis and Meriwether families. Again, Heinemann does not explain how he arrived at the conclusion that the maiden name of Elizabeth was Lewis. It really bugs me when people don't explain their reasoning! I wish CBH was still alive so I could give him a piece of my mind. CBH was a close collaborator of my father's first cousin, also a genealogist, but she never came close to making correct assignments for our Daniels, but that is another rant.?
Anyway..... Goochland records are locked on FamilySearch, so if anyone has transcriptions of Goochland records, knows about the Daniel families who were living there in the 1750s-1780s, please keep me in mind!
Thanks!
Kevin
