William Mack Daniel

It's great to see some conversation going on in the group. I thought I would jump it to ask (again) if anyone has information on William Mack Daniel's (1805-1890) family history. It would be great to find some male Daniel descendants, but I personally don't know anyone from this branch of my family. There seems to be a connection via DNA to Joseph (Job/Joab) Daniel's descendants, & many have William listed as Joseph's son in their trees. I have seen at least one person dispute this connection.

William Mack Daniel was born in NC, married Eliza Ann Melton (1817-1904) in Tennessee (they lived in Lawrence County in 1850). They moved to Reynolds County, MO by 1860, then Sharp County, AR by 1870, then they were in Hot Spring County, AR, by 1880 & lived there the rest of his life. His partial biography is listed in the Daniel DNA Project with all the other participating families, but there is no Y-DNA kit associated with him. He & Eliza had seven children (all born in TN): Avis Caroline Daniel, Lucinda Jane Daniel, James M. Daniel, Phillip Wayne Daniel, William Mack Daniel, Jr., Mary Emma Daniel (my 2nd great grandmother), & John Henry Daniel. At least one son (Phillip) moved to the next county, Clark County, AR, & William Mack, Jr., moved to Texas. Mary Emma ended up in Oregon County, MO.

Oh, wonderful! I almost mentioned John Buckley. One of William Mack's sons, William Mack Jr., named one of his sons John William Buckley Daniel, so I thought there might be a connection. But, I wasn't really sure of John Buckley's family history, either. I have my DNA test on Ancestry, GEDmatch & Family Tree DNA. Do you want to look me up on one of those sites, or should I email you privately?

Hello James,

?

I was speaking to you earlier on the Daniel message board. I then realized that you & I have communicated before, in December 2019, on Ancestry. I just reread your message from back then. At the time, you said you had yet to connect John to William Mack, but then later you referred to William as "John's bro." I don't think that I caught that the first time that I read it because of what you said next, which caught my eye--that William Mack was a co-owner of Meltons Mill. I have often wondered if William's wife, Eliza Ann Melton, was Phillip Melton's daughter. The DNA matches suggest that she could be, & the fact that she & William named their second son Phillip also suggests that. However, almost no one has her listed as his daughter, in fact I think I was the first one on Ancestry to link them together. Not to mention that a descendent of their daughter, Avis Caroline, said it was passed down that William & Eliza lived in far eastern Tennessee, near Iron Mountain, until after their second daughter, Lucinda Jane, was born. That piece of information sort of threw a monkey wrench in trying to tie Eliza to Phillip & William to Joseph Daniel's family. It has also been passed down that Eliza was at least partially Native American. I don't know anything about her mother, so that's a possibility...not to mention that my mother knew Eliza & William's granddaughter (my mother's grandmother), & my mother always thought her grandmother was a full-blooded native, partly because of how she looked & acted, but also because she mentioned being native to my mom & said that she had turned down land in Oklahoma because she wanted to stay in Missouri.

?

As for Elizabeth Green, who was Phillip Melton's wife when he died, I don't believe that she was the mother of his children. They had only been married for about 10 years at the time of his death.

?

The reason that I spelled Joseph's nickname as possibly "Joab" is because that is how it's spelled in a letter that Joseph & Elizabeth's son, William, wrote when trying to help Elizabeth get her widow's pension. I wasn't sure if this was William Mack or the older William, because supposedly the older William was already dead by the time the letter was written (1853). And, the son who wrote the letter lived in Lawrence County, TN. On the 1850 census, William Mack is the only William Daniel that I see in Lawrence County.

?

What are you looking for as proof of ancestry for descendants of this line? As I mentioned when I replied to your message on the message board, I have my DNA test at Ancestry, GEDmatch & Family Tree DNA.?

?

My Ancestry profile is:

?

On WikiTree, I am listed as a descendent of William Mack. My GEDmatch number can be found there, also.

?

By the way, I saw from your message on Ancestry that your middle initial is "M." Is James M. Daniel a family name that's been passed down? William & Eliza's first son's name was James M., & I believe that John also named one of his sons James M (James Madison).?

Hello again. I didn't realize until now that the last part of this conversation posted on the message board. I am still working on this branch of my family, & am very interested in the information that James Daniel posted regarding my 3rd great grandfather, William Mack Daniel, as well as John Buckley Daniel, who James said was William's brother, their parents--John Daniel & his wife, Avis ??, & John's parents--Joseph "Job" Daniel & Elizabeth Calaway. Apparently the kit #13589 is from a male descendent of William Mack Daniel. Kevin, do you have information about this kit & the person who submitted it, Paul William Daniel?

That is a bad thing, but a good motivation for those of us who have not named a beneficiary for our DNA at Family Tree DNA to do so.

I have!

If anyone needs help with this, feel free to contact me via the Daniel Y DNA Project web site, www.danieldna.com

Kevin

Someone has submitted biographical information for this line to our project web site on the Participants page. Just search for 13589...

Kevin

Is this still the correct link??

If so, there is a lot more information that could be added to William Mack Daniel & Eliza Ann Melton's bio. Only one of their children is listed in this bio. They actually had seven children altogether, four boys & three girls. At least six of the seven children married & had children of their own. And both William & Eliza's birth years are incorrect. Kit #13589 appears in Joseph Daniel's bio, but it's not linked to William Mack Daniel's bio.?

James, do you have any more information about Avis, John's wife??

Correction--two of their children are listed, William Mack Jr. & John Henry. But then it switches back to William Mack Jr. & lists his wife & children.
