Daniel/ Stith connections
Was just wondering if anyone knows of any family connection between the Daniel's ( Shelby county KY ) and the family name Stith. The reason for the question is using my dad's autosomal dna kit I have a couple of matches who appear to be sisters, that are apparent descendants of David Daniel b 1804 NC d abt 1870 LA, this David is also a y-dna match to me, when I go to shared matches with these sisters I get three males with the last name Stith( I know this dna could come from anywhere but so far I have not found any other connections dna wise). As mentioned my 4th GGrandfather lived in Shelby county KY , in the 1800 tax/census list was a Stith Daniel as well as a Thomas sr and Thomas jr. (it is not clear if these two were father and son ) , but it appears Thomas jr married a Forsythe woman and they had a son named Stith Daniel also. This Stith later moved to Johnson county IN. I was just wondering if anyone has researched this group or has any insights ??

Hi Joe,
?? This is off the top of my head but..... Thomas Daniel married Elizabeth Stith in Louisa County, VA (?) before 1770. They moved to Caroline County, Va in the 1770s where Thomas sued the estate of his father-in-law for several years. I think the father-in-law died in Louisa (?). I think this is a Middlesex County, VA Daniel line, maybe from James, the non-biological son of William of Middlesex. I'm certain this is a well documented line. ??? Thomas and Elizabeth Stith Daniel moved to Kentucky in the 1790s, Jefferson County, I think. Their son Stith appears in the early 1790s tax lists in that county. I believe that both Thomas and Elizabeth died in the 1790s, maybe in Kentucky, so the Thomas Daniel Sr. in later records was their son who had a son named Thomas. There is a court record in Jefferson or Shelby that mentions their deaths but I don't think there is a probate there... ??? Here it gets a bit tricky as there was a Thomas Daniel from the line of William Daniel (William > William >? John > Thomas) of Caroline in the same counties, Jefferson/Shelby after 1800. I have not been able to sort them out. ??? Pretty sure the Thomas Sr. and Jr. in Shelby County, were the descendants of Thomas and Elizabeth Stith Daniel. ?? I will dig a little deeper into this when I get a chance and try to be more definitive. Best, Kevin |
A quick Google search turned up the following.
From: http://roots4u.blogspot.com/2020/06/racism-and-genealogy-or-musings-of.html "Thomas married well, and upon his marriage to Elizabeth Stith in 1770 he was given a slave woman named Frank as a wedding gift by Elizabeth's uncle. I show my audience that following a man with a very common name like Thomas Daniel through Virginia and Kentucky can be tied together by following Frank and her children. Thomas acquired Frank in Stafford County, Virginia, in 1770. He argued in court in Caroline County, Virginia, for his right to own her and her two sons, Reuben and Humphrey, "and all her increase" at the settlement of his uncle's estate in 1782 and 1783. Thomas was taxed on slaves Frank, Reuben, Humphrey, Clary, Sally/Celia, and Jude in Louisa County, Virginia, in 1782 and 1783. In 1795, Thomas Daniel of Jefferson County, Kentucky, sold Reuben, aged about 25; and Humphry, aged about 24; to Robert Breckenridge. In 1797, Thomas Daniel divested his fourteen slaves in Jefferson County, Kentucky, to his children.? Apparently Reuben and Humphrey were back in his possession, as Frank and Reuben were given to his son Thomas Daniel Jr., while Humphrey went to son, Stith Daniel. " Kevin |
BTW, the Thomas Daniel who married Elizabeth Stith is a descendant of James Daniel, the non-biological son of William Daniel of Middlesex. James and Margaret Vivion Daniel > Charles and Jane Mickelborough Daniel > Thomas and Elizabeth Stith Daniel.
It is interesting to note that some of the most prominent members of the Middlesex Daniel family were descendants of James Daniel the non-biological son of William Daniel of Middlesex County, VA. The men of this line of the family were extremely long lived for generations, routinely living into their 80s and even 90s. Y DNA results, so far, suggest that the father of James Daniel had the surname Davis. A very early participant in the Daniel DNA Project, the first supposed descendant of William of Middlesex, was a descendant of James Daniel. This caused some confusion! Also, based on Y DNA results, it appears that William Daniel of Middlesex had clan ancestry, possibly Irish or Scottish. The closest matches to this line in high marker tests have the surname Wood/Woods, Jones and Hanks in common, but there are matches to other surnames, as well. This is often a sign of clan ancestry. I was recently contacted by the manager of the BigY Facebook group who also happens to be a Wood who closely matches this Daniel line at 111 markers (110/111). He has motivated some descendants of William of Middlesex to do Big Y 700 testing which may soon shed some light on the ancestry of the Daniel family of Middlesex County, VA revealing their terminal SNP. This is all discussed publicly on the BigY group on Facebook and in the Wood discussion group. I am not a member of either group, so may not get the latest news on this research but will share what happens when I find out the results. Best, Kevin |
开云体育Joe,I am a descendant of Thomas Daniel and Elizabeth Stith. Where do you fall in this family? I’d love to connect via your DNA results and research information. My email is below. And Kevin, the blog post is mine. Thanks for quoting it. Mike Michael D. Lacopo? inpowermac@...
