Re: how to.inspect.motor?
I would make one small addition to this.? When rotating the commutator with sandpaper in the lathe, put something down to keep any abrasive off the bed.? Mike Taglieri? On Mon, Jul 1, 2024, 5:23 PM Tony Smith via <ajsmith1968=[email protected]> wrote:

Re: how to.inspect.motor?
开云体育??? I'm hangin with George on the communicator status . My experience with a lot of these import China motors is yer gonna go through brushes & eventually eat the commutator . Example , everything that I have bought with a motor cept for my original 4x6 band saw came with spare brushes & the ones they send with the tools loose size . I don't know if these lathes come with the spare brushes or not , but I know if I had one of these lathes I'd be checkin my brushes every so often . Milwaukee used to send spare brushes that were stores inside the tool . I have drills that I bought in the late 70's or early 80's with the spare brushes , but if ya held the replacement ones next to the ones I've been using for over 40 years there isn't a whole lot of difference between the 2 . I know for a fact that ya can't say that about the any of the? 4 1/2 grinders or any of the drills, sawzalls or multi tools that folks have brought to me to see if I could fix them that were shipped over the ocean . animal On 7/1/24 2:00 PM,

Re: how to.inspect.motor?
开云体育You really need to check if that holder is bent or loose.? That commutator shouldn’t be the that black.? Or any sort of black really, it needs cleaning. ? Doing both isn’t too hard.? You need to pull the end cap off, just take those 4 bolts out.? The cap will be on tight, you might need to tap it off with a hammer.? Once you get that off the armature should come out.? Would help if you take the pulley off.? The bearing in the end cap often hinders things, just slowly work at it. ? Before you do that put some marks on the case so you know how to put it back together. ? Just check the brush holders for anything “odd”.? Loose, cracked, bent, etc.? That brush shouldn’t be angled, and neither should the holder. ? Cleaning the commutator is basically using fine sandpaper(600 grit or better) ?to get back to the copper.? Use a solvent and brush to get as much of the crud off as you can.? Put the armature into the lathe, wrap a strip of sandpaper around the commutator (like you’re not supposed to do) and spin it.? Powering up the lathe would make it easier, but y’know.? If you’ve got a drill stick it in there. ? Go easy, the copper is hardened, but it’s copper.? It won’t take long. ? It’s possible the commutator is worn, but unlikely.? The fix is you just simply turn it down in the lathe, but again. yeah k’know. ? Once? that’s done find something to clean out the slots in the commutator, a hard plastic tool or the like.? Don’t use a knife etc.? There are mica insulators down in the slots, again be gentle and don’t damage those.? You want to get all the carbon & copper dust out. ? Wipe it down with the solvent, put it back together and see how it runs.? ? Tony ? ? From: [email protected] <[email protected]> On Behalf Of Ralph Hulslander via groups.io

Re: how to.inspect.motor?
开云体育Ralph,
.
To remove the belt, YES remove everything,
everything is in the way.
.
To dis-engage the
belt, just loosen the motor mount bolts until the motor is
loose and shift the motor sideways until the belt is clear.
Reassemble is the
reverse with extra attention to perpendicular alignment AND horizontal alignment
.
Did you inspect the brush holders yet?
.
Good Luck,
John

Remove the belt so spins freely." That leads to my next question. How to remove the belt? I guess everything that is removable from the end of the lathe? must be removed. Now it gets harder to find.? Check to see if electric at motor wire is DC. On some motors I would take wire come out motor and use DC power source. Remove the belt so spins freely.? I used a battery charger for cars and trucks.? This should if in board or motor.? Dave? On Sun, Jun 30, 2024 at 05:59 PM, Ralph Hulslander wrote:

Re: how to.inspect.motor?
开云体育Sand it flat, and after that have a look at the brush holder.? Looks like the brush is going in at an angle which is why the brush tip is angled when it should have a curve in it. ? Holder might have come loose or cracked.? You see this sometimes when a motor gets hot and the holder melts.? The bit the brush goes in is metal, but it’ll be attached to a plastic base (used to bakelite in the olden days). ? Tony ? ? ? Re: how to.inspect.motor?
开云体育Ralph,
.
Good to hear you found something.
.
The brush rides inside a square tube
made of plastic, or bakelite, or some other non-conductive
material.?
It is possible the inner edge of that
tube has broken, allowing the brush to move/shift, causing that
uneven wear you are describing.
.
Get a flash light or something else
suitable and look inside the motor and compare the 2 brush mounts
to see if you can determine why the one brush wore in that manner.
Perhaps the brush is slightly smaller
than the other and wiggles more in the mounting.
Trade them back and forth and see if
you can identify something different from one, to the other.
.
Good Luck
John

Re: how to.inspect.motor?
The brushes can be filed.
There are stick for comutator cleaning that stick though the brush and clean up the comutator. You can glue a 220 grit sand paper dot on end dowl that does something.? Remember to use a real good glue or epoxy.? You do not want dot coming off or real pain to get dot out motor.? Dave? |
Re: how to.inspect.motor?
Progress!! I turned the lathe around, I was surprised?how heavy the lathe is. I removed the shield, and the motor cover. I also removed the control panel from the front so that I could inspect the brush on the front. The brush on the front looks?great, there is still 3/4" of brush and the wear surface has a nice concave face. It looks like only the top 1/16th of the brush could have contact,?but there was no sign of contact wear.. The lower part of the brush had a crud accumulation and there was no contact wear. I could flatten the face.Should I do more than that? I possible could make a triangle on the face, but not sure how. I'm going to offer that you may have a broken plastic gear inside the lathe.A easy way to eliminate the gear train is to place the high/low gear lever in a vertical (neutral) position and see if the motor works O.K. You could also try turning the chuck by hand in both the hi and low gears to see what happens. If there are bad teeth you should feel that after a couple turns of the chuck. |
