Ralph,
.
To remove the belt, YES remove everything,
everything is in the way.
.
To dis-engage the
belt, just loosen the motor mount bolts until the motor is
loose and shift the motor sideways until the belt is clear.
Reassemble is the
reverse with extra attention to perpendicular alignment AND horizontal alignment
.
Did you inspect the brush holders yet?
.
Good Luck,
John

"
Remove the belt so spins freely."
That leads to my next question.
How to remove the belt?
I guess everything that is removable from the end of the
lathe? must be removed.

Thd
biggest thing is on brushes and comutator is they are clean.?
Now it gets harder to find.?
Check to see if electric at motor wire is DC.
On some motors I would take wire come out motor and use DC
power source. Remove the belt so spins freely.? I used a
battery charger for cars and trucks.?
This should if in board or motor.?

As good as the brush from the front looked, I
don't think I need to worry about the commutator.?
So I should?just file the brush flat?
