Ralph,
.
Good to hear you found something.
.
The brush rides inside a square tube made of plastic, or bakelite, or some other non-conductive material.?
It is possible the inner edge of that tube has broken, allowing the brush to move/shift, causing that uneven wear you are describing.
.
Get a flash light or something else suitable and look inside the motor and compare the 2 brush mounts to see if you can determine why the one brush wore in that manner.
Perhaps the brush is slightly smaller than the other and wiggles more in the mounting.
Trade them back and forth and see if you can identify something different from one, to the other.
.
Good Luck
John

Progress!! I turned the lathe around, I was surprised?how heavy the lathe is.
I removed the shield, and the motor cover.
I also removed the control panel from the front so that I could inspect the brush on the front.
The brush on the front looks?great, there is still 3/4" of brush and the wear surface has a nice concave face.
It looks like only the top 1/16th of the brush could have contact,?but there was no sign of contact wear..
The lower part of the brush had a crud accumulation and there was no contact wear.

I could flatten the face.Should I do more than that?
I possible could make a triangle on the face, but not sure how.
