Regardless of how you buy the backplate (by itself, or in the same box with a chuck), you still have to turn the backplate, to ensure true running ON YOUR lathe.?

So, it is not a big?deal to purchase the two separately.?

Andrei

Actually, 1 1/2 x 8 is such a common size they actually do sell chucks with a backplate that is pre-threaded.

Go to littlemachineshop.com and buy a backplate for about 30 bucks (for 4") or up, then turn it to match your spindle and chuck and you are done.?

As for the chuck, just do a search on eBay for K72-xxx where xxx is the diameter in millimeters. So, it is 100mm for 4", 125 for 5" and 150 for 6" chucks. The prices I found with great ease start at $59 and go up from there.

Instead of complaining about it, just do the legwork. I spoon fed you all the information you need to find your chuck/plate combo.?

Ebay is full of 5-inch 4-jaw chucks at aroudn 60 bucks and they are new at that price. Find one that matches your spindle.?

Even if it were 100 bucks, it still beats making your own.?

The cost of materials alone will cost more than that, unless you chose to make a chuck out of mystery steel and not harden the jaws.?

But that would not be a chuck, it would be just a worthless chuck-shaped object.?

Where did you find a new replacement 4-jaw chuck for $60? Besides that, making your own would certainly be good practice. :)

The current Machinist's Workshop has a DIY 4-jaw chuck. Might be an option for cheap bastriches like me. :)?

Re: lathe vibration

ok a little bit of progress..? I discovered that the big stud (10-112) at the bottom of the whole motor and counter shaft carrier the outer nut was about 1/4" away from the frame allowing the whole thing to move. That has been tightened so it is against the frame where the frame seems to want to sit. ?
?
I put the motor on the mount with no belt and there is very slight vibration in the bed of the lathe but im sure some rubber feet will sort that.? Next i was going to just put the belt from the motor to the counter shaft however tightening that bottom bolt has moved the motor position and the belt is looser than a hookers knickers so new belt needed again before i can move on to the next bit but progress made. ? ?

Re: lathe vibration

The washing machine motor on mine gave up the ghost some years ago. When looking fo a replacement I found a motor and VFD pair from Automation Direct that was just a little more than a new single phase motor, so I splurged.? Best thing I ever did for the old lathe.? Leveling with a machinist level was second.? Link-a-belt (?) With the old motor was also a very good change.??

Single phase motors, by their nature will have some vibration.? Ballancing might help (??).? As long as the motor shaft isn't? bent, its probably as good as you get.??

I agree with Andrei, easy, cheap first.? If you don't have a link-belt, easy thing to try and it really helped mine, when you get around to making changes.

You may also want to mount the motor. No belts and see what it does.? Resonance can be a funny and poweful thing.? If vibration is much worse than on the bench, add or subtract some weight from the motor mount assembly and retry.? I doubt there will be much difference, but easy to check.

Yes, that is what I meant. Those bearings and shaft and then motor. Also, the belt may generate some vibrations if it has a bend in it. Old, hardened belts may do that

@Andreli The headstock bearings are ok as far as i can check them.? i have very little run out on the spindle nose.? I suppose the thing to do is check the run out on the countershaft the same way.

Re: lathe vibration

@Jon,? im fairly happy about the big pulley.? my friend made a mandrel up and put it in his mill.? there was 10ths of a thou of run out as best as we could tell.? I dont have a way of testing the physical shaft.
?
@Greg The motor that came with mine isnt the original however its a decent british make.? The issue is that if i just sit the motor on the bench with no belt i can feel slight vibration in the bench.? So the motor does vibrate,? whether or not it still would if clamped solidly to the bench is another matter and whether or not that is accounting for all the vibration i have no idea.? The motor doesnt fit on the motor mount so someone has made up a 1/2" thick plate bolted to the motor mount with the motor bolted to that.? Having measured the mounting holes on the lathe bracket they dont seem to match any modern standard its a little tricky to know where to measure from.

Re: lathe vibration

There are manybreasons for vibration. Start with the low hanging fruit of belts, shafts, and bearings. Maybe it is something easy to fix, without much expense and effort.

Re: lathe vibration

A single phase motor, especially an old washing machine motor like came on mine, is also a source of vibration.

?

Link-a-belt helped a lot, 3 phase VFD really smoothed it out.
