Ebay is full of 5-inch 4-jaw chucks at aroudn 60 bucks and they are new at that price. Find one that matches your spindle.?
Even if it were 100 bucks, it still beats making your own.?
The cost of materials alone will cost more than that, unless you chose to make a chuck out of mystery steel and not harden the jaws.?
But that would not be a chuck, it would be just a worthless chuck-shaped object.?

Where did you find a new replacement 4-jaw chuck for $60? Besides that, making your own would certainly be good practice. :)

The current Machinist's Workshop has a DIY 4-jaw chuck. Might be an option for cheap bastriches like me. :)?

Looks like mine and also without 4 jaw chuck, but it does have steady rest.. So a little more investment is required on top of $500.
