what chuck would my atlas have
7
Bit of a silly question possibly but what chuck would of come with my atlas in 1941. The one on it has the pratt chuck made in england lightly stamped/engraved on it the model no FN436 is heavily stamped. above it has a small hexagon divided into triangles. I cant find any thing like it so no idea if its genuine or a copy or what it is.

Craftsman Commercial back gear removal
2
I am replacing the spindle belts on my Commercial 12". This is on a cabinet so the under drive option is used. I have pulled the spindle, but the back gears need to come out as well and I cannot figure this out. How does this split apart? As an aside, are replacement oiler caps available for the end of the eccentric? I'll need a new one because...reasons. Jeff

center height/ distance from topslide
8
Hi all if anyone has a 10f could you possibly measure from the top of the topslide/compound to the center line of the spindle. Im wondering if there is something odd with my headstock as i am measuring it at aprox 33mm which apparently is the sweetspot of a bxa aloris tool post however the website also says that its for a 13-15 inch swing

More bloody slop found
4
Afternoon all, I wanted to see if i could adjust the clamp screws on the counter shaft and as usual found something else. Its hard to describe so i will use the part numbers and try to attach pics. The hanger (part no. 9-21) can slide along the hinge pin (9-123) just over 3/16" parallel to the bed. the hanger can also twist perpendicular to the bed about 40 thou on its pin. Many thanks .

clearance on my 10f
5
There is something funny going on with my atlas. when the top slide is inline with the cross slide the handles interfere with each other. All the round handles are 4" in diameter so i havent put the wrong handle on as i have been rebuilding it. All that is different is i put a different micrometer collar on that hasnt altered the length of anything. even if it did it would still collide at a different spot. pics for reference

10F spindle frozen
14
I sold my place in West Virginia a couple of years ago and moved the shop to a garage in Southern Maryland. Life intervened and I'm just getting around to setting the shop back up. When I moved the 10' Atlas lathe I took off the motor and pulley assembly as a unit, stripped it of all tooling, chucks, tailstock, etc, and took it off the bench it was bolted to. It arrived intact and the spindle was turning freely. I occasionally put a few drops of spindle oil in the headstock oilers and the other oil points. The garage is insulated, heated, and cooled. A few months ago, I noticed that the spindle was not turning freely. The back gear pin is not engaged and the back gears turn freely. I was down there a couple of weekends ago and put some Kroil in the oilers, hoping that it would do its magic. No luck, so far. Obviously, I can disassemble the spindle and dig into the problem or I could try some heat and brute force. But I wondered if anybody on the group has a suggestion that I might try before I get into teardown mode???? Thanks, Richard Marchi

T-Slot Cross Slide Castings source?
7
Many years ago I recall seeing Tee slotted castings that could be machined to fit on top of the carriage, replacing the crossslide and compound to facilitate milling. Are these available anymore? I have been working with lot 8020 type extrusions and am looking at setting my Craftsman Commercial 12" up as a horizontal mill. Thx, Jeff

history of my lathe
28
It would be interesting to try and find out the history of my lathe and how it came to be in the uk. It appears that it was made end of april /beginning of may 1941 (going by the dates on the headstock bearings) so right when America was ramping up the lease lend program during ww2. Was atlas involved in the lease lend? where lathes sent to the uk? of course the slightly less historical important theory is that an american solder bought it before the americans went to war and then relocated over here after the war sometime many thanks Coop

Dreaded crack sound
21
I posted this on the 618 group a couple of days ago with minimal responses. Posting here since I think the group is bigger and more active. ----- In electronics you have the magic smoke, with cast iron you have the magic crack sound. Anybody know where I can find a bottom tailstock M6-7 replacement for a 618? Fleabay didn't turn up anything. I could mill one, but I'd really like to keep it original. Setup of Compact Bender
12
Hello, This might be a little off topic for a machining group but I have a metal-working-related question that someone here might be able to provide some good information about. I recently came across an unused Compact Bender (floor model) at a price point that was way too good to pass on. I am looking to attach it to the floor of my garage using caulk-in anchors so I can set it up and take it down as needed. I have not used one of these benders before but I've watched quite a few videos. My question is about critical space around it. How close to the nearest wall would you get (figuring farther away is better but space is limited). In other words, what is the minimum amount of space you would recommend from any wall. And, which side do you feel can work with the least amount of space? I've got some thoughts on these things but wanted to see if anyone here has experience with one of these benders and has some thoughts about the initial setup. Will

trying to attach the motor to my 10f
5
Hi all i have finally got to the point where i can see light at the end of the tunnel and its not the oncoming express train to Sheffield!! Todays task was to measure up for the bolts to mount the motor to the lathe but there is this plate bolted to the bottom of the motor and its unclear if its supposed to be there. Either way the bolts dont seem to line up with the bracket on the lathe. Is this second plate supposed to be there Pics for clarification

Bad Chuck - Can it be Solved
20
? ?Hi all, I am in the process of rehabbing a 3995 lathe. It was free and maybe I now know why. The runout on the spindle inner and outer diameter is really good. Like .0013. Screw on the chuck and chuck up a mandrel and it all goes bad, really bad. You can see it, let alone measure it. The chuck is a Cushing 3 jaw. So is it worth buying a new chuck, i.e. will it mitigate much of the issue, or is there something else at play here (see what I did there) that I have missed? I am new at lathe details and the ins and outs, but an engineer by background. Sent From iPad
