Re: TH42 to TH54 change info needed

I am considering replacing hte bed and lead screw on my TH42 with one each off a

Are there any important differences in these parts between TH42 and 54?
The leadscrew should be the only thing else you would normally need to change.
The carriage rack is almost a part of the bed, but is removable. Make sure
the longer bed has the rack. Every other part should just slip right into place.

Between 10 and 12 in versions?
Um, yes! The beds are completely different. The flat surfaces the carriage
slides on are thicker and wider apart on the 12". As far as I know, none of the
major components (headstock, tailstock, carriage, cross slide, compound
or QC gearbox) are compatible. The smaller components, like the leadscrew,
the gears in the apron, threading gear chain (except for the bracket all the
gears mount to), spindle and backgear, countershaft, chucks, etc. can be
swapped.

Between QC and non-QC versions?
Generally, the change-gear lathes can be updated to QC by simply removing
most of the gear train and mounting the QC box. There were some
early machines with 5/8" leadscrews that need a bushing to mate with
later hardware. This would be on the very early 10" only. As I mentioned
above, the 10" and 12" QC are not compatible, due to the greater spacing
between the spindle and the leadscrew. If one was willing to do substantial
hacking, you could MAKE it fit, I'm sure. You'd probably need to fabricate
a completely new bracket to hold the gear train coming down from the spindle,
and need to make up some mounting bracket for the box. The 10" QC
has 2 vertical bolts that bolt it to the top of the bed, to the left of the
headstock.
The 12" has 2 horizontal bolts that bolt it to the side of the headstock.

Re: Onboard

best I can say is check an Enco cataloge . they have plan back chucks for
cheap at times . I spent a great deal of time trying to get the 6" one I got
with my lathe to clamp on center the jaws where realy messed up , I gave up
and bought a new one and sold the old chuck with my other lathe . I spent
$250.00 on the new one it was worth it . mounted it took a piece of clean
stock chucked it up but the dial indicator on it and it was right on . then I
found out the bed was worn made a long cut and it has an awful taper to it up
by the head stock . oh is the chuck you have a single pinion 3 pinion? I can
always keep an eye out for parts . do you think it can be welded and
remachined . since its not real critical you might be able to weld it and
grind the teeth into shape with a dremel tool . the abraisive cut wheels they
have for them removes metal real well and you should be able to reach
inbetween the teeth . shape them by eye just a thought

Just curious Skip, is it an original Atlas/Craftsman chuck? Clausing
can't help you out on that particular part. I see Bob made a
suggestion of "remachining it". I've not scratched the surface of my
machine yet. Hopefully will as time permits, then I'll have a better
understanding of what you are working with.

As far as I can tell, the website just maintains some basic statistics
for the users of the list. I'm going to compile information and put it
up on my website for the users of this list. Be a little bit. Paul, one of
the users has documentation for the little Craftsman AA lathe, once
he gets it to me, I'll make it available. If anyone cares to add to the
site, feel free to suggest or send the info along.

Some of you may have seen and found this group via a post I made
on the rec.crafts.metalworking newsgroup. My intent was to start a
list specific to Atlas and Craftsman users. So that techniques and
tips specific to the machines could be shared. I was hoping to
create another resource for Atlas/Craftsman users and the
invariable newbies that bought the AA machines that come along.
This is done via e-mail. As some of you know, reading a busy
newsgroup can be time consuming. Sometimes before you get a
chance to go through them, your ISP may have overwritten a
message that might have been of interest to you. (Of course there is
always Deja News). The concept of a list is to send a message
directly to those interested. You can delete, save or reply when you
are ready to.

The poster does make a good point however, the newsgroup is a
valuable source of information when it comes to generic operations
and other valuable tips. This list is not meant to replace it. Please
feel free to frequent the newsgroup. If you find some good
information that you feel will benefit this group, bring it back and
share it or bring our attention to it. If you find someone looking for
Atlas and or Craftsman information, e-mail them and invite them to
join. At this point all they have to do is send an e-mail to:
atlas_craftsman-subscribe@...

Right know, I have the list set up so that permission must be granted
to join and access it. Its the most secure way to keep the typical
unsolicited garbage out but then again, we might not see any of that.
How ever I can set it up to grant subscribership automatically. This
would be less restrictive and might encourage more users to come
and go as they wish and not seem like an "exclusive club" if you will.

What are the thoughts of our "infant" group? :-)

I'm also considering creating a page specifically for Atlas and
Craftsman machines including links to sites that anyone might come
up with.

BTW, thanks to all of you who have helped this "newbie" along.
Happy New Year to all of you!

Marty

Thanks Bob,
My chuck is a single pinion. I'd thought about building up and
remachining it. If I can't locate a replacement,I'll give that a try.

Greetings one and all

I R in here now!

I acquired one of the little AA style lathes for a song in a horsetrade
and have since disassembled and rebuilt it. The original owner had given it
to his middle-aged son about 20 years ago after a lot of use. Aside from
a few of the threading gears being chewed up (need to get replacements
sometime), it's in good shape. I've coupled it with a sirplus 1/6 HP motor
too big/small? It came with only the 4 jaw chuck. Any leads on a
reasonably priced 3 jaw?

I've acquired a buncha tooling via swapmeets and now only lack the time
to play with this lathe.

Borrowed one of the Lindsey books on engine lathes and found it lots better
than any of the machine shop handbooks, etc. for a 'dummy' education. If
anyone's interested, I'd be happy to post the title/author and purchase
info once I find the book :-)

Just bought a small steam engine kit as a XMAS present for nephews
and wish I had had a chance to duplicate it on the lathe first. Anyone have
info on kits or plans for these?

That's about enough for my intro to the list. Looking forward to some
words of wisdom......

Ed T.

Ed,

I don't know which AA Lathe you have, but if it is the (nominally) 4"
lathe your spindle is threaded 1/2 x 20 and Sherline has a 3 jaw chuck
with 1/2 x 20 thread for the AA lathes. (their normal is something like
3/4 x ?) I think it was about $75.00.

BTW, I need a new spindle for my AA 109. Any ideas?

If it doesn't bog down with the work you do, 1/6 is fine. I believe I
remember seen an old Sears Craftsman Ad that said the motor for
these little machines was 1/4hp.

I've acquired a buncha tooling via swapmeets and now only lack the time to

When I purchased the AA/Craftsman lathe it had a bent spindle. I was working
at Gates at the time as the plant electrician and had access to the plant
machine shop. I made a new shaft with a spindle nose threaded 1" x 10 for a
Craftsman 4" 3 jaw chuck I had. Obviously, I later tried too heavy of a cut
and bent that shaft. Since Sherline has both 3 and 4 jaw chucks with 1/2" x
20 thread available, I'm looking for a serviceable shaft to get the lathe
working again.

Need information

John Kalina

Hi, I have just recently bought a craftsman lathe, from a friend of mine and have been trying to scrape up some information about it.? From the model number, 109.20630 It seems to be made by aa engineering. I believe I have all the change gears. There is a four jaw chuck and key but that's it. Is there any one out there that has a manual for this lathe that I could get a photo copy of? I would pay for expenses running off a copy and postage. I would also be interested in any other information such as years made, if any parts from other lathes fit etc.??
?
??????????????????????? Thanks?? John?
