Re: Atlas Lathe FS Reno Nv CL
Regardless of how you buy the backplate (by itself, or in the same box with a chuck), you still have to turn the backplate, to ensure true running ON YOUR lathe.
So, it is not a big deal to purchase

Re: Atlas Lathe FS Reno Nv CL
Actually, 1 1/2 x 8 is such a common size they actually do sell chucks with a backplate that is pre-threaded.

Re: Atlas Lathe FS Reno Nv CL
The backplate is a separate item that you buy or you make. Nobody sells new chucks with a backplate because they don't know what lathe you have.
Go to littlemachineshop.com and buy a backplate for

Re: Atlas Lathe FS Reno Nv CL
Ebay is full of 5-inch 4-jaw chucks at aroudn 60 bucks and they are new at that price. Find one that matches your spindle.
Even if it were 100 bucks, it still beats making your own.

Re: Atlas Lathe FS Reno Nv CL
Where did you find a new replacement 4-jaw chuck for $60? Besides that, making your own would certainly be good practice. :)

The value of one's time is greater than the 60 bucks or so you have to spend on a replacement chuck.

Re: Atlas Lathe FS Reno Nv CL
Looks like mine and also without 4 jaw chuck, but it does have steady rest.. So a little more investment is required on top of $500.

Yes, that is what I meant. Those bearings and shaft and then motor. Also, the belt may generate some vibrations if it has a bend in it. Old, hardened belts may do that

Re: lathe vibration
There are manybreasons for vibration. Start with the low hanging fruit of belts, shafts, and bearings. Maybe it is something easy to fix, without much expense and effort.

Re: lathe vibration
A single phase motor, especially an old washing machine motor like came on
mine, is also a source of vibration.
Link-a-belt helped a lot, 3 phase VFD really smoothed it out.
