FBA-25A 5
Thank you, I will check Batteries America for a battery pack. Another question: right now I have the FBA-25A battery case in the radio. The case is frighteningly tight and quite difficult to "force" into the radio with batteries installed. (It's even quite tight when empty.) With some batteries, it wouldn't fit into the radio at all. Has anyone else had this problem? I've seen mentioned the FBA-25. One seems to have replaced the other, but is there a difference? Loosing my mind too! 11
I haven't used my FT60 for quite a while. After reading the latest post I dug it, and that's when I started losing my mind too. When I press the PTT switch to transmit the radio acts like it is powering on: screen goes blank; radio "beeps;" it lights and displays 7.4V; then it displays the frequency (it's defaulting to 430.000). I tried the reset: Off > MONI/on > dial ALLRST > press FW and all I get is the same as above. Any suggestions? Thanks. W1ZHU

Losing My Mind 13
Several months ago I purchased a FT-60 and have read everything that I can get my hands on and have watched every video and still can't do anything except listen to the weather. This is my first radio and I am brand new to the hobby. Several local repeaters are loaded on the radio but when I hit the PPT I get a red light. What am I doing wrong. I figure after reading comments from others that I must be missing something simple. Thanks in advance for any assistance offered.

Manually Programming your FT-60R - ZOOM 7
Found a need for doing this some more. Back in 2004, Gordon West and I initiated “pre-programming” HTs for new hams while I was working for HRO-Anaheim. Out of that grew a presentation. Back then, of course, it was all performed in-person. But now … “How to Manually Program Your Yaesu FT-60R” via Zoom. Know of any hams who might want to partake? I limit the audience to 10 attendees - so that is stays intimate and all can ask everything they want to. And it will keep the session to an hour. West Coast time … I have Mondays off. But will add 6PM or 7PM start time during the week. Please send me an email with a couple “best times” for you. Or, if you have a “lead,” send me their email address. Happy with new FT-60! 5
For some time, I'd wanted to retire an old Baofeng HT. A year ago I bought a well-used FT-60R from a local ham. It had some issues, including a bent (and subsequently broken off) shaft of the CHAN dial control, and a cracked display lens, but it worked. Recently, a well-known equipment vendor had an attractive offer (good price/free shipping) on in-stock FT-60s. Having earned a few discretionary freelance bucks, I went for it, and now have a brand-new FT-60, along with one that's a bit beat up, but can serve as a spare, or half of a combo for sat duplex. Used CHIRP to save the factory config, then pasted in the channel assignments used for the older radio, and re-did some of the Mem Bank assignments. I had also earlier purchased a spare battery, AA holder and used speaker mike, so I have a nice bit of kit. Clint's site, and his presentation to our radio club a few months ago, convinced me to remain an FT-60 user. Having AM Air Band was also a deal-maker for me, and, for now I'm not interested in digital voice modes. Chuck WV8A

FT-60 powers off and on when PTT is pushed 13
My FT-60 started power off and on when I press the PTT button. I can charge the battery but it drops to 7.2 volts after a few days. Do I need a new battery? It is probably 9 years old. Larry K0LAI

newbie query.........what and why for all the features? 5
I must politely disagree with Phil, KC6OEI about his desire to “determined to master this thing without resorting to a programming cable”. This “thing” you are trying to master is a protocol established by one or a bunch of engineers in the way they chose. They had an objective (or design goal) in mind and it might have been “minimize key strokes” or “minimize hardware complexity” or whatever, and they chose a (programming) method to do that. In essence, you are trying to master their method. It’s likely easy if your head works like theirs but maybe not. It seems to me that MY design goal would be to have the most basic setup functions (Freq, power, PL, squelch method, etc.) be so obvious that anyone could do it without a manual. Then I would add enhanced features with multiple button pushes using function keys or mental telepathy or whatever. Not using a programming cable is your prerogative and might suit your philosophy and needs but I, for one, enjoy the convenience of that capability and recognize I am SOL for a quick change if and a PC are not available. I actually applaud your tenacity and drive and wish I could master that approach. As an aside, IMHO there needs to be a better philosophy of programming (taxonomy?) that achieves what we need and is so idiot-proofed that a mistake is impossible. I think the FT60r approaches that, but not quite. Will W6SWF credo quia absurdum

Programming for ISS operation 2
I have entered RX on 145.990 and TX on 437.800 into channel 100. I used the instructions in the manual. While preparing to enter the special transmit frequency, I set SQ TYP to TONE and CODE to 67.0 Hz. I verified that it really does transmit the tone. Then I entered it into channel 100 per the instructions, holding PTT down while pressing F/W momentarily. It did store the 437.800 transmit frequency, but did not store the tone. So I went back and entered the RX frequency again, this time with the tone settings. And, I entered the transmit frequency again; the tone settings had been retained. After switching to channel mode, the tone now *does* transmit. But the tone mode is also present on receive. Does this mean the squelch will open only if the 67 Hz tone is received? Does the ISS transmitter even send this tone? Cheers, Halden VE7UTS

newbie query..........what and why for all the features? 10
Newbie Ham (Tech, Aug '20 and Gen'l, Dec '20) w/ new FT-60R. Going thru the Owner's Manual and Rick Sparber's KG7MQL "Beginner's Guide", I am bewildered by all the features for which I have no idea of their use or value. Since local Elmers are not back up to speed yet (5-'21), are there any resources that would explain what all these features are and why someone would find them important. I'm sure they're not exclusive to the Yaesu FT-60R. Dumb question, I know, but that's where I'm at .........right now. Thanks a bunch. 73! Tom Resk KJ7TKR Reno, NV

memory power loss 9
I have noticed that my FT-60 will NOT store the power setting for a repeater frequency. I can manually set the Tx power setting to LOW, and it will keep that setting. If I turn off the power or change batteries, the FT-60 changes to High power. On High power, after pushing the PTT switch then, it will not transmit, like it is being over powered.and shuts down. Any suggestions? Jim KQ6VP

Lack of reception on top half of 900 MHz amateur band
Hi all... Part of the reason I bought an FT-60R is that it has receive coverage of the 900 MHz band. To my dismay, I discovered that reception is blocked from 918.5 to 943.5 MHz. In North America, the customary simplex frequency is 927.5 MHz and repeater outputs are in the 927s, too. Thus, the only common ham frequencies this radio can receive are the repeater inputs. That's not very useful. I've learned to be skeptical of the specifications claimed by sellers of BaoFeng and similar radios. But Yaesu!!?? Yaesu's specification has the disclaimer of "cellular blocked" which might pertain to this deficiency. Does anyone here know which part of the 900 MHz band is used by cellphones in North America? I thought it was all in the high 800s of MHz. Does anyone here have the "E" version of this radio? Does it, also, have reception blocked in the 918.5 to 943.5 MHz range? -Halden VE7UTS

Broken DIAL control shaft 3
A while back I bought a used FT-60R (for a very low price). I'd been looking for one, as its features, especially the AM Air Band, were selling points. Under previous ownership, the radio apparently had been dropped, falling on its upper right corner. The result was that there was a small bend in the shaft of the DIAL knob, so rotating it around its off-axis also dragged the SQUELCH outer ring along with it. A careful attempt to straighten this very small diameter shaft worked, for a while. However, the weakened shaft finally decided to break off, just below the surface level of the radio. I know that for some functions I can use the up/down arrow keys to emulate the DIAL's 20 positions, but not all. I still have the knob and the detached part of the shaft. Question- is it worth any effort or even possible to consider a repair to make the control shaft usable? Is the switch itself replaceable whether by factory, third-party or DIY? Or, should I just keep the radio as a spare and just look for another FT-60R? Chuck WV8A

SBH-13 Desktop Charger - Unplug When Not Charging? 6
I just got my FT-60R and accessories. The instructions for the SBH-13 Desktop Charger say to unplug it when not actively charging the radio. I have never seen this before on a charger, to unplug it when not in use. As I use the radio extensively, I am charging it a couple times per week. I also bought a second SBH-13 and have it mounted in my truck and fed by the 12V vehicle system. Does everybody always unplug the charger when not actively charging the radio? That seems a bit of a nuisance to me. -- 73, Michael WA7SKG "Any day you do not learn one new thing is a wasted day."

I can't get my FT-60 to Scan 4
I am having problems getting my FT-60 to scan. I know that scanning has worked on it before, and, don't know if I have set some deeply hidden parameter of something - but - now I'm having problems. Here is a run down. 1. I loaded a bunch of repeaters into the FT-60 using RT Systems' FT-60 Programmer. I got that to work with no problem They are in the main memory bank. 2. Everything appears to be working fine, and, they scan as long as I hold down the MHz up or MHz down buttons, but, as soon as I let release the buttons the scanning stops. 3. I have played with the RESUME setting and tried Busy and Time. 4. I have checked and the Skip setting is turned off on all of the frequencies. Scanning works fine as long as I hold down the buttons, but, as soon as I release them scanning stops. Anybody got any suggestions. I'm out of ideas. As I said, scanning has always worked in the past - so -unless I have developed a circuitry problem (which seems unlikely) - it must be a parameter setting somewhere that I'm missing HELP!! N Adapter on FT-60? 5
Sorry, this is a pretty basic question but I just don't have one around to test it... I'm wondering if an SMA to N adapter would fit directly on the FT-60. Just going by the measurements it looks very close (21mm on the male plug). Has anyone tried this?

Opening up the FT 60/MARS Modificatoin 11
I don't believe the FT 60 is Narrowband capable. Opening up the frequency section would not give you much access to MARS or Public Safety in the USA as both services have converted to this mode. Additionally most Urban public safety agencies are using Trunking systems which the FT60 won't do. Many have moved to 700 and 800 Mhz. Even our Rural fire departments have converted to Narrowband on VHF. You can still listen to Marine VHF if you are near the water. 73 Jim Bassett, RMC(AC), USN, Retired Las Vegas Fire & Rescue, Communications, Retired NNZ9KQ-SHARES, Southwest Region Net Operations Manager W1RO-ARRL Life Member-A1 Op Nevada Section Traffic Manager

YAESU FT60 AND VX8DR MARS CAP MODIFICATION 6
If you’re like me and have a ham radio for both hobby and emergency situations, you may want to consider opening up the radio. This would increase your coverage and in the event of a true emergency you will be able to transmit outside of those amateur bands. See how this can be done https://baninii.com/2021/01/12/yaesu-ft60-and-vx8dr-mars-cap-modification/

vx-180v 3
If this is too far off topic, please delete, but I am looking for information. I may have access to a couple of retired Vertex 180v radios. Can they be programed to regular 2 meter use? I suspect simplex would work, but what about repeater tones? Thank you in advance. kd0kry

Any FT-60 owners with FT-65? 3
As intuitive as my FT60R is, my new FT-65 is the opposite? !!! Anyone know how to MEM to VFO with FT65? Okay, I paid exactly half what FT60 cost for the newer radio so maybe should expect some head scratching. HNY! de Wb8yqj Don Carlsbad, Ca. USA
