Losing My Mind

Several months ago I purchased a FT-60 and have read everything that I can get my hands on and have watched every video and still can't do anything except listen to the weather.? This is my first radio and I am brand new to the hobby.? Several local repeaters are loaded on the radio but when I hit the PPT I get a red light.? What am I doing wrong.? I figure after reading comments from others that I must be missing something simple.? Thanks in advance for any assistance offered.

Check the offset direction, + or -, check that CTCSS is on, and that you are transmitting the correct tone.

I would perform a reset, and follow the half-page quick programming guide on the SHACK AIDS page at work- sat.com?

It took me a couple months before I could talk on a local repeater.? There is more to it than just dialing up the frequency and pressing the Push-to-Talk button.

Most repeaters have a carrier tone that they listen for with the transmission and ignore any transmissions that lack this tone.? So figuring out the correct tone is the first piece of the puzzle.

My local repeater uses a CTCSS tone of 123.0 MHz.? To set that on your radio, press the F/W button, then "1" then rotate the little dial until TONE is displayed.? (Your repeater may not use a tone, but a DCS code or some other method to add a carrier signal.)? Then press F/W again.

Next press F/W, then "2", then rotate the little dial until 123.0 Hz is displayed, and press F/W.? It is highly unlikely your radio uses this same tone as my repeater, so dial up your correct tone.

The other piece of the puzzle is the frequency offset.? You transmit on one frequency, and listen on another when using a repeater.? Your radio likely does this for you automatically, unless the repeater does not use a standard offset.

Finally, programming the radio can be difficult in general.? I bought a programming cable for about $8 off Amazon and downloaded the free "Chirp" software and got my radio set up real nice now with separate memory banks for repeaters in different cities, Fire/EMS, aviation, and even satellite frequencies.

Stick with it--it gets easier, and more fun once you can use your radio!

Red light indicates you are transmitting. It is not an error indication.

More questions.

Are you using the stock antenna or something better? Are you on high power, 5 watts? (F/W then 3 then turn the knob)

The red light when you press the PPT indicates that you are transmitting.?

Thanks to everyone for your suggestions and feedback. I try whats been suggested and get?back to everyone soon with hopefully great news. Thanks for helping.?

Jeff,
If you are far from repeaters or other hams these make a huge difference.

Jeff - EVERYTHING you need to know is in that 84-page manua to manually program your HT.

BUT - It sure isn't logically presented, and on pages 1, 2, and 3 ...

That's why I - and others - have created "cheat sheets" for fellow hams. Mine digests those 84 pages?
into one-half of one page ...

PLEASE KNOW that the FT-60R is a great HT. And once you get yours re-set and programmed manually?
with a couple local systems, you WILL derive pleasure from it!

Maybe the club where he took his test can step up and Elmer those taking the test. Teach them the basic to get them going. If they are left to flounder around they loose interest quickly. Just my thoughts.

The FT-60R has advanced features that “simplify” operation. The problem—and it’s a nice problem to have—is that is takes some real work to learn them all and frequent use to remember the steps!

It took me a long time to discover, or maybe rediscover, that the radio will automatically store repeaters (page 48 - Smart Search) and subaudible tones (page 24 - Tone Search Scanning) if I tell it to do so.

Cheat sheets are a great gift to us FT-60R users. Thanks.
