newbie query..........what and why for all the features?
Newbie Ham (Tech, Aug '20 and Gen'l, Dec '20) w/ new FT-60R.? Going thru the Owner's Manual and Rick Sparber's KG7MQL "Beginner's Guide", I am bewildered by all the features for which I have no idea of their use or value.? Since local Elmers are not back up to speed yet (5-'21), are there any resources that would explain what all these features are and why someone would find them important.? I'm sure they're not exclusive to the Yaesu FT-60R.? Dumb question, I know, but that's where I'm at .........right now.? Thanks a bunch.

Love your response, Clint!? And, I do plan to work satellites, esp the ISS. Tom KJ7TKR On Thu, May 27, 2021 at 6:47 PM Clint Bradford via <clintbradford=[email protected]> wrote:

You’re not alone! After not using the radio for too long, I’m re-learning the simple operation of my FT-60R, discovering features I’ve never used (memory banks, alphanumeric memory labeling and subaudible tone detect) and wrestling with some of the instructions in the manual. I’ve even printed yet another copy of the manual because my original and prior printed copies ?are…around here, somewhere. I call the Set options Set-and-Forget because there are so many. The manual is a must here because the abbreviations tell me nothing. One incorrect button push will put the radio in the wrong mode for accomplishing what I’m trying to do. It’s because every button has three functions depending on press technique: momentary, press-and-hold and Function-button-first. Putting programmed memories into banks seems awkward. There’s a lot of switching modes back and forth and dialing a bank and then a memory before I can store what I want, where I want. It feels to me like I’m doing everything twice. As a degreed electrical engineer, I’m determined to master this thing without resorting to a programming cable and software. I’m smarter than a piece of technology! Phil, KC6OEI -- --

Phil, KC6OEI, You're my spirit animal!? A double E in doubt..........I love it.? I'm only an M.D. struggling thru the same maze of baffling instructions but have accepted my position at the low end of the learning curve.? I can see that I'm gonna love this group both as a source of education and inspiration. 73! ya' all Tom, KJ7TKR Reno, NV PS? Rick Sparber, author of the "Beginner's Guide to the FT-60R," commented separately that (paraphrasing), "Yeah, those guys know it all" On Fri, May 28, 2021 at 5:57 AM Philip Milazzo <philip.milazzo@...> wrote:

Sure Nick. I get its value in cases where I have to reload everything. I expect not to be reprogramming the ht much after setup. I only reset it to factory defaults as a (re)learning exercise. I didn’t lose much because I only had a (small) handful of repeaters stored. On Fri, May 28, 2021 at 16:25 Nick Rylatt <rylatt.nm@...> wrote: So am I (Industrial AC power).?
