YAESU FT60 AND VX8DR MARS CAP MODIFICATION

If you’re like me and have a ham radio for both hobby and emergency situations, you may want to consider opening up the radio. This would increase your coverage and in the event of a true emergency you will be able to transmit outside of those amateur bands. See how this can be done

Of course, that would be illegal to do. Radios not type accepted. Nuff said.?

It is not illegal to modify the radio. It is illegal to transmit if there is not an emergency.

The radio still needs type accepted. Why not just get a radio that is legal for both? ?Wouxun KG-UV6 would be one example. The Vertex 180v would be another.?

Technically, yes. Where is the FCC? Here locally our simplex frequencies are awash with non licensed transmissions. Many OHV users, jeep clubs, et al are buying the baofing (sp?) radios and transmit with abandon. When asked for a call sign we are rewarded with profanity, etc. this is a greater problem than a few nips and tucks in a ft60 to transmit out of band in an emergency. Just my $.02. Ka7bad

Please excuse any typos, I’m either on the dirt bike, paddling kayak thru rapids or running from a grizzly bear—credo quia absurdum!

Bad title for the MOD.? The mod would NOT make the radio legal or acceptable on CAP freqs.? There is currently NO amateur VHF radio legal on the NTIA freqs assigned to CAP.

And to the best of my knowledge, only one model of a popular amateur HF radio legal on their freqs and that only if it had been in service with CAP now for several years.

The term MARS/CAP mod is as obsolete as spark-gap transmitters at least as far as the CAP side of the term.? I can no longer address the MARS side as I let my AFMARS membership slide when they went so heavy jin encrypted digital comms.
