How To Boost Scanner Antennas 12
Scanner antennas receive signals across a wide range of frequencies. Scanner antennas include police scanners, wi-fi scanners, search-and-rescue communication equipment and amateur radio scanners that seek out any signal. Scanner antennas may be used by those who wish to listen in or so that parties like first responders can respond to it. A scanner antenna’s signal reception can be improved by reducing its interference, strengthening its signal, and increasing its sensitivity and range. Here is how to do it https://prezhost.com/2020/05/09/how-to-boost-scanner-antennas/

Heil HTH-Y and FT-60R? 5
Hi. I have a question about the Heil HTH headset. I just read in a product review that people have trouble with the Heil HTH-Y headset and the FT-60. Apparently, the plug does not fully insert into the jack, causing the radio to intermittently transmit. Then, looking at the product page at my local dealer's Website, I read: "*For the weather resistant Yaesu/Vertex such as the VX6R and VX7R please use the HTH-I and a Yaesu CT-91 adapter." So, which should I get? the HTH-Y, or the HTH-I plus adapter? Also, has anyone compared this to the SM63 headset from Yaesu? The Heil is about 60% cheaper. I have the HTH-K for a Kenwood HT and like it a lot. Chris

FT-60E vs FT-60R TX coverage (446MHz) question
I'm a new owner of FT-60E but I'm in need of expanding TX coverage. In my country there's allwoed to use also 8 channels PMR (public mobile radio) on 446MHz. I know that FT-60 is designed to use on 2m and 70cm HAM bands, and does it well but there's a difference between 60E and 60R. On 60E TX coverage ends with 440Mhz so it excludes desired 446MHz. 60R TX coverage ends on 450MHz and it includes 446MHz. What makes a difference between these models? Is it a software limit or something general on PCB design? I know there's a "MARS CAP" mod to remove one resistor from PCB board, and expand TX coverage to 470MHz, but this is not I really need. I need just 446MHz coverage that FT60R already has from factory. Is there a way turn my Yaesu FT60E to FT60R? Richard

FT60 Headphones? 12
I want to be able to use headphones just to listen. Something like a pair of earbuds. I do NOT want a speaker mike or anything like that. Does anyone have an easy solution, like an off the shelf adapter that will work and provide mono audio in both ears? I understand the TRRS differences plus the mono output and the issues involved. I'm looking for a simple solution like an adapter or cable that does it all. 73 Gary K9GS

Screen protector? 8
I've had my FT-60 since it first came out, and have had to replace the screen twice due to my own negligence. Does anyone know of a screen protector that fits or approximates the FT-60 window size/shape? Bill W1WH

What Are My Battery Options? 17
I'm about to receive a used Yaesu FT-60R... my first! Better late than never, right? :) Its NiMH battery is used, and rated at 1,400 mAh. That seems low compared to newer batteries for other HT's I own. Does anyone sell a higher-capacity pack for the FT-60R, maybe even Lithium instead of NiMH? Also, the manual makes a big point of advising against using rechargeable AA's in the 6AA alkaline pack. Is this still the case, even with newer cells? I have a great external charger, and will always be removing them from the pack and charging them in that... and they are 2,700 mAh cells: https://www.paulsfinest.com/maha-powerex-pro-aa-2700-mah-nimh-rechargeable-low-discharge-batteries-8-pack-with-case.html Thanks for any tips and info. Battery Latch Too Tight? 11
I don't have fingernails really, and I'm finding that little battery latch to be extremely hard to open. I'm glad the tolerances are so tight with this radio generally, including the drop-in charger, but man, I have to use a dime or a thick guitar pick or similar object to open that battery latch. Is there a trick to this I'm missing? Other than that, I see what all the fuss is about with this classic. I ran nets for a couple hours on 2W last night and still had lots of battery left! Chris

DTMF Transmit Lag? 5
Hi. I regularly send commands to my Allstar node from my FT-60, but the fact that it keeps transmitting a second or two after the last DTMF is sent keeps me from hearing the first part of any audible signal back from my node. Similar with linking and unlinking repeaters. Is there a way to turn that off? A Kenwood HT I have doesn't do this. I'm seeing menu items for DTMF memory delay and speed, but nothing for what I'm talking about. Thanks for any suggestions. Chris

Transmit pl problem 3
I am trying to access repeaters with pl on 443mHz. The pl is turned on and proper shift. I searched the pl tone with another radio and it came up with the correct tone being transmitted. But I cannot access the two close machines near me. Is it possible the tones level is too low? My Kenwood ht accesses both machines ok. Thanks Gordon kc2bw

Looking for some advice about batteries 5
Hello All, When it comes to these big car batteries, or the ones for motorcycles or these batteries that provide backup power to these security systems. You know what I’m talking about, not the FNB-83. So any of you have used any of these batteries to power the FT-60R radio? Any insights would be appreciated. Thanks in advance! 73 Wassim WN6WJN

Pl-259 connector wit thin centre pin? 11
This question relates to the Yaesu FT-8800, not to the FT-60. Sorry about the intrusion, but I know that there are some very knowledgeable hams on this group, and I hope someone will be able to help me. Thank you in advance. The diameter of the chassis SO-239 socket on my Yaesu FT-8800 is too small to accommodate the centre pin of the PL-259 connector from my antenna coax (It worked until a couple of months ago, but I recently moved and now there is no way I can fit the PL-259 pin into the SO-239 socket; I know it sounds crazy, and it is driving me crazy, but the diameter of the SO-239 on my FT-8800 is definitely smaller than on a couple of other radios I have, and smaller than on a HS05 cable I use with one of my handhelds). Any suggestion? Where can I find PL-259 connectors with a thinner (less fat) centre pin, or an adapter connector with thinner PL-259 to regular SO-239? Bernard Rochet VA7BLR

mini operating manual or cheat sheet? 7
Is there a small version of an operating manual or a cheat sheet of sorts available for this radio. I would really like something that lets me easily program the radio for new channels, repeaters, etc in the field a bit easier than trying to read through the whole owner's manual. I would prefer something that does not cost additional funds but would if the document is useful enough and the price is right, consider buying something.

Increasing Deviation? 22
I just came across this video on adjusting the deviation on the FT-60. Has anyone here felt the need to do this? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R3Ovv5_TVNg&t=30s I've been wary of "peaking" a radio ever since I owned a Realistic HTX-202 many years ago, that was far too hot to begin with. And, whenever I hear an FT-60 on the air, it sounds great. That said, I would like to document this, along with some other things I've read about the radio, before getting one. I'm blind, so I'm only going by what he says out loud in this video, but I'm pretty sure the steps are the following. 1. Push Monitor and Lamp simultaneously, while powering on the radio. The display should say "Set RST". 2. press UP, 0, 1, 7, VM, FW. Display should say "ref. xxx" 3. Press FW, then BAND 3 times (I assume you press BAND 3 times, not both FW and BAND 3 times), but it's not absolutely clear how he says it 4. Press PTT within 5 seconds, and then UP several times. (I'm a little lost at this point. do the available settings wrap around? He talks about going from 3FH to 0). Is all of the above accurate? Any other tips and tricks you'd like to share, things not immediately findable in the menus? Should I Buy One? 10
Hi folks. I already have enough HT's here... Kenwood TH-D74A, Yaesu FT-70DR, and a TYT MD-UV380 UHF (for DMR). But, I picked all of those up before I started hearing people talk about the FT-60R, always in glowing terms, and often using the phrase "modern classic". "They won't make a handheld like this in a long time"... I realize it's a basic radio compared to many others on the market, but to be honest, I don't need GPS, Bluetooth, APRS or a touch screen. How is the FT-60R's receiver performance? All other things being equal, would I notice more sensitivity, better rejection etc. than my Kenwood or newer Yaesu? Have any of you compared the receiver to others on weak signals? With supplies of new ones dwinling fast or possibly all gone, should I pick one of these up? Why/why not? Thanks Chris ---------------------------------------- Check out The Making Better podcast, interviewing some of the world's finest thinkers, discussing an optimistic vision of the future. https://www.makingbetterpod.com/

Battery Replacement 6
Dear FT-60 User Group - I wanted to get a replacement battery for my FT-60 HT. I was considering purchasing a backup FNB-83 battery pack. I just wanted to see if people had any other suggestions for a rechargeable battery pack. Thanks, Brian DeLuca W2EMC

CONVINCE ME: FIRST-TIME BUYER, MAYBE 18
I have several HT's already, for various bands and modes. I don't really need another. But, people refer to the now-discontinued FT-60R in such glowing terms, I want to pick one up so I don't miss out. People are calling it a modern classic, a commercial radio in the amateur market, etc. etc. "They won't make one like this in a long time", is typical of what I hear about the FT-60R. Asuming I can find a new one somewhere, why should I pick it up? Is the receiver that much better, the case that much tougher, etc.? Yes, I'm inviting you to help me spend money on another radio, which, let's face it, is a fun part of this hobby. :) If it does better on weak signals than my Kenwood TH-D74A, or rejects intermod on 2 meters better than my Yaesu FT-70, I'll gladly pick one up. thanks and 73's, Chris
