Increasing Deviation?

Chris Smart

I just came across this video on adjusting the deviation on the FT-60. Has anyone here felt the need to do this?

I've been wary of "peaking" a radio ever since I owned a Realistic HTX-202 many years ago, that was far too hot to begin with.
And, whenever I hear an FT-60 on the air, it sounds great.

That said, I would like to document this, along with some other things I've read about the radio, before getting one.

I'm blind, so I'm only going by what he says out loud in this video, but I'm pretty sure the steps are the following.

1. Push Monitor and Lamp simultaneously, while powering on the radio. The display should say "Set RST".

2. press UP, 0, 1, 7, VM, FW. Display should say "ref. xxx"

3. Press FW, then BAND 3 times (I assume you press BAND 3 times, not both FW and BAND 3 times), but it's not absolutely clear how he says it

4. Press PTT within 5 seconds, and then UP several times.

(I'm a little lost at this point. do the available settings wrap around? He talks about going from 3FH to 0).

Is all of the above accurate?

Any other tips and tricks you'd like to share, things not immediately findable in the menus?

Thanks,

Chris

The only shortcoming of the FT-60 is the mic plug arrangement. Tough to keep it plugged in all the way.

Mine was a major nuisance, so much so I tossed?the microphone in a drawer. When time was available an inspection of a new non molded male connector did not exhibit the pop out problem. Cutting away the insulation which butts against the radio on the connector solved my problem. ?Frankly given the widespread problem and duration it was surprising it had gone on so long. As far as I know the overmolding on the connector is still in production.?

I've heard of the problem with the mic plug but my experience doesn't agree.? Since I got the radio and an MFJ speaker/mic I have always routed the mic cord under the belt clip and attached the support ring around the base of the antenna.? I've never had a problem with the plug coming loose.? I have two HTs and the FT-60 is my go-to radio for public service events.

Yep, I trimmed the plug also. Had it pop out during an event and got a call from one of my friends telling me that I was transmitting. Now I use rubber bands to hold it in.
I know the receive on this radio is better than the Baofeng radios. Was at an event using the Baofeng and a guy near me had the FT60 and was hearing things I didn't hear. Got out the FT-60 and the receive came alive.

Chuck - was the problematic speaker-mic a genuine Yaesu MH-34?
--
Clint Bradford K6LCS

I do not remember the specific microphone model number. It was purchased
from a dealer at a hamfest and is the OEM lapel speaker-mic combo. The connector
was right angle and when plugging it in it did yield the distinctive tactile feedback
a simple 3.5 mm connector does. Initially I wrote it off, then I experienced an
overheated FT-60R. The connector popped part way out and triggered the PTT.
I can only hope the microphone disconnected as in traffic I frequently utter insults
at other drivers that include elements of a vocabulary that would get your mouth
washed out with soap when a kid.

Overall I was disappointed in the FT-60R engineering of the system. During a
pre-divorce tiff with the XYL the base stand charger walked out of the house.
So I stopped in at a dealer and purchased a replacement wall wart, not realizing
the power connector on the charging stand was different than the power connector
used on the FT-60R. The end result was the old battery did not charge so I decided
the battery being a few years old and not recently charged had simply dropped
to zero. After buying an OEM replacement and having it run down I finally put
two and two together and ponied up for the base stand. By the time I bought
the base stand, wall wart and battery I had more spent than what it would have
cost to buy a new FT60R with the charger stand, wall wart and included battery.
Ouch. Eventually I discovered comparable piece parts were available on e-Bay
for about 15% of the ham shop prices.

Overall I find the FT-60R to be - ok -. I guess I was spoiled by the Icom IC-2AT.
Nice thumbwheels to dial in a frequency, no memories to program and could
survive being rolled over by a vindictive XYL in the 3/4 ton axle rating truck. I
can only wish Icom still built a handheld with the same look, feel and XYL
resistance.

The Wouxun's and Baofengs are a mixed bag. Sometimes you get a good one,
sometimes a bad but most of the time a mediocre one. I sure would not depend
on one for critical emergency comms.

About 10 years back I went to Shelby with my uncle, his step son, and a high school
friend of my uncle. The four of us had Wouxuns. As my uncle had one interest and
I another we broke into two, two men foraging parties. We decided to use simplex
and changed to 145.52. Three were golden but the 4th person sounded like they
were off frequency when running a radio check. So we switched to another simplex
frequency and again ran a check to make sure we could hear each other. Again
three of us were golden, but now a differing op sounded as though he was off
frequency. We never succeeded in finding a frequency that all four of the handhelds
sounded ok. At least I have not encountered that issue with the Yaesu.

I cut a notch in the swiveling rubber socket cover. That permits Full insertion of the plug and maintains friction on the side of the plug to hold it in place.

The one I bought was delivered with a strain relief that fit over the antenna. Then you routed the speaker mike cable through it which worked well for me as long as I felt the solid tactile feedback of the connector actually clicking. If the connector is not protected by some means as you pointed out, it is a good way to inadvertently offend a large audience. ?

Yep, e-Bay is littered with them and a lot of other items for the major players’ products.?

A friend recently needed a replacement microphone for his Kenwood TM-281 2 meter mobile rig. When checking the price it was nearly half the purchase price of a new replacement rig. He turned to e-Bay and in two weeks a mike arrived that looked like the Kenwood, did everything the Kenwood mike did, sounded like the Kenwood mike , but was only $15.00 including shipping. ?I am willing to bet if you look hard enough you could find a biological weapons lab for sale on e-Bay.?

I do the same. I lost the retention?ring within a year of buying the radio. I tried two different attach?points for the ring before it disappeared: the base of the antenna and one of the rotary controls. Neither was ideal or permanent. For durability, I use rubber bands from vegetables, such as broccoli. They're tougher than the office product variety.

You might try one of those silicone charity bracelets.

Usually, though, I just route the cable under the belt clip.

You may find that some third party mike accesories have the pin alittlr too long or short, or need the plastic at the base "adjusted" to fit properly.
