This question relates to the Yaesu FT-8800, not to the FT-60. Sorry about the intrusion, but I know that there are some very knowledgeable hams on this group, and I hope someone will be able to help me. Thank you in advance.
The diameter of the chassis SO-239 socket on my Yaesu FT-8800 is too small to accommodate the centre pin of the PL-259 connector from my antenna coax (It worked until a couple of months ago, but I recently moved and now there is no way I can fit the PL-259 pin into the SO-239 socket; I know it sounds crazy, and it is driving me crazy, but the diameter of the SO-239 on my FT-8800 is definitely smaller than on a couple of other radios I have, and smaller than on a HS05 cable I use with one of my handhelds).
Any suggestion?
Where can I find PL-259 connectors with a thinner (less fat) centre pin, or an adapter connector with thinner PL-259 to regular SO-239?

hmm, could you carefully file the center pin down a bit?

Wouldn’t it be easier to use a small drill bit to make the receiving hole slightly larger? ?Do by hand only? Jardy Dawson WA7JRD

Has maybe the old PL 259 center pin stayed in the radio , It happened to a fellow ham and he was prepared to send it back to the dealer.?

Before boring. drilling or reducing pin size find another PL-259 and verify it will not fit in the SO-239 connector. I have worked with SO-239's and PL-259's for nearly 60 years and the only time they do
not mate is when something has seriously distorted the connectors. Something is broke, fix it, instead
of working around the breakage.
If a second PL-259 fits then the original PL-259 is bad. Replace it. If the second PL-259 does not
fit then examine the SO-239 for something left in the socket center or damage to the center cylinder.

Chris, That would take a lot of filing, and doing it carefully would take a lot of time. I may have to resort to that in the end, but I am going to explore other solutions. The specs for the FT-8800 say that the connector is "SO-239 (USA version).” I am wondering whether the diameter of the socket of the "USA version" is smaller, and if so where I can find the corresponding (with a thinner centre pin) version of the PL-259, and under what name.

I suspect the "USA Version" is not the connector itself but rather it indicates the US Version of the radio uses an SO-239 connector.

The so-239 is a standard specification. The best advice is to first ascertain whether a different? pl-259 (male) connector will fit or not. Many times the solder job at the tip of the pl-259 connector is a bit sloppy and needs to be filed down. However, if the difference is great, then you may have a foreign item stuck in your so-239 receptacle or an adapter is attached. 73?

I think that means that the USA version uses an SO-239 wow the European version uses a different connector, probably an "N" connector.

Thank you all for comments and suggestions.
Kevin and Chuck were right: It was an old PL-259 center pin casing from another antenna that stayed in the radio. Your comments pointed me in the right direction, and once I was able to visualize what had happened, it was easy to figure out what to do. So I am back on the air and glad to be working again with my FT-8800, which is a great radio. Thanks again.
