What is reasonable asking price for a 1961 heavy 10 4
My son picked up a Southbend Heavy 10 serial number 12446RKL16. Near as I can tell it is a 1961 Heavy 10. It has the lever action collet closer on the head stock, taper attachment, and an aftermarket quick change tool post with a few tool holders. It has both a 3 and a 4 jaw chuck and a faceplate and a drive plate. On lathe dog and a handful of 5c collets. It appears to have a 3 phase motor. It’s on an original south bend cabinet. It does have original lantern tool post or at least parts of it. Previous owner had stripped it all down and primed the lathe but not painted it. I’m still in process of cleaning it up a bit after sitting in my unheated shop this past winter. Located in central Virginia. I haven’t really been paying attention to prices for a while. I know the one answer being whatever a buyer is willing to pay but that doesn’t really help set a fair asking price. He needs to partially fund a newer heavier lathe that is more in line with what he needs for his job shop. He’s holding my SouthBend Fourteen hostage ?until he gets something else. Sincerely Mark R. Indexable carbide insert turning tools 37
I recently went modern and purchased a box of subject tool bits. I had been led to believe that tool preparation was a thing of the past. My 9" Model A complained with growling and chattering, making a mess of a cut. Investigation showed that the tool had no clearance between the shank and the work. Setting the point on centre helped for a few seconds but then the growling restarted. It appears to me that although the triangular insert is shaped, and might have necessary clearances, these are only on the thin insert. The shank is only cut away parallel to one side of the triangle, the leading edge is vertical (shaped like a WWI destroyer bow). Is it intended that we grind the shanks to provide the necessary clearances?

Set Up my 16" - Test Cut 13
I rebuilt my 1969 16" x 6' lathe some years ago with help from Ted! Thank you Ted! I bought it from work around 1990 - they had bought it new in 1969. But it was not in great shape. Ted provided many new parts and even quite a bit of labor. I had set it up in the old shop and it cut pretty good. Built a new shop a little over 2 years ago and finally got around to taking a test cut. Started about 0.001" per inch. The worst part is around the chuck area (no surprise) but worst is around 0.002" per inch. But over 17 inches, maximum deviation is 0.013" . From 0 to 17" its 0.0011". I don't know what is typical, but this will work just fine for most of my needs. What do you typically see from these lathes when in nice shape? -- 1969 16" x 6' South Bend Lathe Garage full of old Mopars........

1913 South Bend Model 34 needs new home 2
Hello, I bought this 13" lathe from a recently widowed lady to spare her trying to sell it while not knowing anything about it. I've done a few repairs and have it up and running. Details on the lathe: 1913 Model 34 Serial #2367. 8 ft. bed, 69 in. between centers. 6 1/4 in. 3 jaw, 10 1/4 in. 4 jaw, 6 &10 drive plates, steady rest. Single phase 120v motor. I built a wooden heavy mobile base to get it home, it is bolted to the base and ready to go out the door! If anyone is interested, please contact me through my profile email address, I prefer to send any pictures through email and prefer to talk on phone. I gave her $400 for the lathe and have some money tied up in repairs, would like to recoup as much as I can. I live in Story City, Iowa. 30 miles north of Des Moines Thanks Kevin Little

Arduino tach 13
hey folks have any of ya made a tachometer using a Arduino ? I tried some I found online but most of them seem to have something wrong with the code I'm not smart enough in the Arduino world to decipher the code . What are you folks using ? I don't want to buy just a tach from China . I need to get one working in the Arduino platform for part of a project I've got going . thanks animal

Gisholt Chuck 2
Looking for some information on a Gisholt chuck. Tried several other sites, but no luck. Would be used on my vintage SB9c. Six Inch diameter. Photos show very little wear on the jaw faces with no bell-mouthing. Not really a need, just an opportunity and avaiilable locally. Please share any knowledge you guys have. Thanks, and a Happy New Year to all. Greg

What is it? 5
I got this by accidentally. It’s called a center finder or non magnetic separating rod. It does split and is held together with a spring in side. Is it related to lathe work and how is it used? Thank you From Louis R Vallee

Request for dimensions 5
Hello...Brian aka ka9egw aka lurchix aka Lurch here. After a number of years' hiatus, I have time to get out to the shop again. i have two micrometer carriage stops for my 10K, a lefty and a righty, neither of which has the bottom plate ['clamp'] which I believe to be PT1201NK1. I've looked all through the files section but pulled a blank...i just need to know the dimensions. Thank you in advance Lurch

Cover for Cross Slide and/or Ways 30
I have a SB9A with taper attachment. I would like to fashion a cover for the cross slide and taper attachment as it seems like the most time consuming area to clean. There does not seem to be an obvious way to attach covers without some hole drilling, which I prefer as a last resort. The cross slide screw is most annoying to clean, but the taper attachment as a whole is a pain. Removing it when not using the taper attachment is the obvious solution, but I would like to avoid that as well. Does anyone have photos of how they deal with chip control?

TA cover 3
Here's a slight variation on what others have posted regarding their TA covers. This is on my13". Two features that are useful are the slight bend on the close end that allows it to ride up over the cross slide and second the hinge (5.25" from the locking handle) which allows one to back out the cross slide all the way to the end.

Taper Cover Heavy 10-10 L 5
here's a better pic with dimensions for the Alignment Indentations, which I missed on the 1st try. Specs are from my Heavy. The indentations are 5/8" center to center of the hole. (looks like I'm getting a D+ in drafting today) LOL
