Upcoming Activations - Post Plans Here
96
Quick thought. I know most people use the SOTAwatch3 site, the SOTA Goat app or otherwise to add alerts, but does anyone have any interest in, or utter objections to, pinning a thread on this page for upcoming activation plans? Many might be lone wolfs, or only like to hike with a select crew, etc. Understood. However, for those that are looking to just let everyone know they planning to activate within W0C soon (or elsewhere) this thread could act as an alert alternative or supplement to Sotawatch3/other applications. For those looking for a hiking partner in crime (or misery), I figured this might be a good, permanent thread option for the page. It's just another way to dial in and distill the local activations from the widespread noise via the other alert options. If someone has broadband service while hiking/nearing the summit, it can also be used as a last minute alter/spot. Yes, one can filter the existing tools for W0C alerts but I think this also adds an opportunity for last minute beta, suggestions, warnings, etc. Sure, the thread might generate many emails, and some that are salty might not like the barrage of emails, but then again, if you joined an .io group, you probably don't have too much of an aversion to emails ;) Plus, it's easy to hit delete. My 2 cents. Thanks - Mike.

Double SOTA Goat Day April 3rd
7
This posting is meant to "alert" all our W0C friends about our Big Day! Shane/N0QLR and I/KD8EQA are both at 997 activator points, and hope to join the herd this Thursday, April 3rd. We will be activating The Pulverizer, W0C/SP-092. Any activators who would like to join us, we will be at the trailhead/Wilkerson Pass parking lot at 7:30 AM. Any chasers who would like to to chase us can monitor N0QLR-7 on aprs.fi. Then, watch for our Spots. Our Alerts are for 16:15 UTC, and we will be working all the bands (Shane on CW, me on SSB) in an attempt to work all our friends near and far (2m too for any local S2S or folks in the South Park region). If anyone wants to join us for the Après Activation Party, meet us at Russ's Place in Divide, 2 hours after you see our QRT Spot on SOTAwatch... the first round's on me! Ray / KD8EQA

First CW activation
5
I can't remember who it was, but someone recently made a comment on the list about activators posting stories and pictures to our group so that others could live vicariously through them... so this is such a post :) My friend Mark N0MRK made his first CW only activation on Mt Croiser. He's been working on CW everyday for quite a while making continuous improvement and decided that he wasn't even going to take a mic with him this trip to keep from talking himself out of doing it. He had a very successful activation on 15 meters, with his very first contact F4WBN Christian in France! Always a thrill to work some DX on a summit, but having DX be the first contact on the first ever CW activation was pretty exciting. We ended up having to ditch the plan to do West Crosier in the same trip due to the incoming storm getting a little too close for comfort, but Crosier was a huge success. Congrats Mark! 73 James KI0KN

Understanding Multipath on VHF
I recently became aware that the signal variations due to multipath propagation on VHF are not known by everyone. The result was this article I wrote on the Ham Radio School website. It includes some tips on how to optimize your signal when using VHF in the mountains. See https://www.hamradioschool.com/post/vhf-multipath-more-than-one-signal-path 73 Bob -- Bob Witte K0NR bob@... Found eye glasses on Little Scraggy

I found a pair of prescription Ray Ban sunglasses in a black case about halfway up the final rocks to the summit of Little Scraggy. I left them up there on a rock so people should be able to see them. 73, Brad WA6MM

W0C dinner (part 2)
I forgot to ask... If you plan on coming to the dinner, would you mind shooting me a private email with the number of folks in your party? I need to get a semi-accurate count of people to give to the restaurant 48 hours before the event. You can use the private message function in groups.io, or send to ki0kn (at) arrl.net Thanks! (Re)Mark your calendars for the W0C Spring dinner!
Folks, Sorry about the false start earlier, and thanks to all that submitted survey responses. We had an overwhelming preference for April 27th, and for South Denver. I know some folks can't make it, but like anything, it's impossible to pick a date that works perfect for everyone :( If you can't make the dinner, let's see you at the campout in Sept!! The event room is booked. Details here: W0C SOTA Spring Dinner Rock Bottom Brewery 9627 E. County Line Road, Centennial, Colorado 80112 6:00pm, Sunday April 27th We will have the big private room in back as we've had before. Everyone will be on separate checks and gratuity is already included. I've asked for vegetarian and vegan options. They will do their best to accommodate. Folks, our food and beverage minimum is higher this year (what hasn’t gone up?!). If we don’t meet it, I will have to personally cover the difference. Please come eat, tell stories, and enjoy. and bring a friend :) Looking forward to seeing everyone in a month! 72/73 James KI0KN

W0C SOTA Spring Dinner - update
Hi folks, Well, time has gotten away from me and I've had a chance to collect some feedback. Let's try this again and see if we can make things work for the largest group of folks. I originally announced we'd look at April 6th. This time ended up looking poor for quite a few people. So, I will be posting a groups.io poll right after this email goes out. The new choices are: Dates: April 27th May 4th Locations: South Denver Castle Rock Please wait for the poll and respond to it as soon as possible. Once I feel like we have the 'mass' in, we'll book the venue and announce the result here. Thanks, looking forward to some eyeball Q's! 73 James KI0KN

Update: Colorado 14er & Mountaintop Event 2025
2
The Colorado 14er Event Task Force has been meeting recently has decided to make two changes to the event this year. 1. To emphasize the activation of any Colorado SOTA summit during the event, we are changing the name to the Colorado 14er & Mountaintop Event. Not a big change but it should tag the event more appropriately. 2. Previously, the primary two days of the event were the first Saturday/Sunday of August with two bonus days on Friday and Monday. The participation on Monday has been low, so we considered dropping that day. However, there is a lot of interest in being able to participate on weekdays (and not the busy weekend). And some people just can't get enough days of mountaintop operating! Ultimately, we decided to still have two bonus days but shifted them to Thursday and Friday. So the dates for the 2025 event are: Primary days: Sat August 2 and Sunday August 3 Bonus days: Thursday July 31 and Friday August 1 More event info are available here: http://ham14er.org Thanks to the task force for working through these issues: Ray KD8EQA, Steve WG?AT, Wayne AD?KE, Peter KD?YOB, Terry WB?RBA, Bob K?NR 73 Bob Bob Witte K0NR bob@... WOC SOTA Summit Values

Is W0C in some sort of purgatory for past wrongs? Can someone tell me why our mountains are worth less points? Below is a few snapshots on the Colorado border. Feel free to berate/scorn me as the noob I am.

2025 W0C SOTA Campout
19
Hey Everyone Even though I bailed on coordinating last year's campout as we approached it, didn't attend myself, and am terrible at sending out emails to coordinate in general, I figured I'd post a quick note about a potential 2025 gathering. Thanks again to James - KI0KN for picking up my slack last year and to all others that assisted and/or attended! To get things started for 2025, I wanted to see what kind of interest there is regarding attendance, as well as thoughts on location. With that said, if you could maybe respond to THIS thread with your thoughts on the below, it would be appreciated. 1) Are you interested in attending? I'm thinking of keeping it around the same timeframe as last weekend, which if I recall, coincided with the Sept VHF contest, which is September 13-15, 2025. 2) Would you prefer to return to the same location (Reverands Ridge campsite - Golden Gate Canyon State Park)? https://www.cpwshop.com/camping/map-of-golden-gate-canyon-state-park/r/campgroundMap.page?parkID=50025&tab=sites. OR....go elsewhere? If you are interested in going elsewhere, throw out some ideas. 3) Matt- KF0RIG reached out to me this week and was kind enough to offer a suggestion for another location. It's the Rocky Mountain Mennonite Camp: https://maps.app.goo.gl/eTtt5kjjU3tATtLaA https://www.rmmc.org/. Matt stated that he, based on his relationship, might be able to reserve all 5 sites at that location. BUT, if we are going to go with that option, we'd have to possibly let him know in the next month or so in order to get things reserved. So, please consider this along with your thoughts on other locations. Also, I am not committed in this role of master of ceremonies. So, if someone wishes to take over coordinating, I am MORE than happy to assist any way I can! ;) That's all for now. Enjoy the snow! - Mike, W1NV

Self-supported options?
11
Good morning, When I was asking earlier about Moab SOTA recommendations, Dean K2JB made mention of making sure to take a self-supporting mast as the park officials don't want you attaching things to the parks. In Colorado, I either A) Use my KH1 B) Use this: https://www.homedepot.com/p/Nite-Ize-12-in-Gear-Tie-in-Bright-Orange-2-Pack-GT12-31-2R3/313478925 to hold up my SOTAbeams Carbon 6 by attaching it to a branch or something C) Throw the wire on the ground and not worry about it I've really never had any issues just tossing the antenna on the ground, with the very poor conductivity of our rocky mountains, I don't think it's negatively affected things much. But I was curious... do any of you use a self-supporting stand of some sort to hold a mast without tying it to something natural on the hill? If so, what do you use? Thanks for sharing! 73 James KI0KN

W0C SOTA Spring Dinner - April 6th
2
Good morning all, We've been tossing around the idea of a spring dinner again. It seems everyone has fun with those. Several people have expressed interest and discussion was started about when/where/what format. Bob and Joyce started this dinner several years ago and all the years we've had it seemed to be a smashing success. Bob has agreed to co-lead this year and with a few of us sharing the duties, it allows for any last minute things to come up personally without having to hand off the reins. Mark your calendars for April 6th. I am working with the restaurant we've been to a few times in the past, Rock Bottom Brewery off County Line road in South Denver and will pass along details when we have them. We realize that having a dinner on the Front Range makes it more difficult for folks that don't live nearby (although.... we often get our Kansas and Oklahoma contingent to make the trip which is fantastic!!). We'll make sure to organize a Fall Zoom session this year (in addition to the camp out) so that we can include all the SOTA enthusiasts in our association from wherever they live. Thank you K0NR, K0JJW, KF0RIG, and KD8EQA for the help, the latitude to keep this going, and the excitement to keep our association busy with events. Stay tuned for more details, but save the date! 73 James KI0KN

40 meters to the W0C rescue!
3
Awesome contact with Matt (KF0RIG) today from South Park (W0C/SP-100) to Montrose, CO on 40 meters SSB. I could not hear him on any other band, at all, just the hunters. A great real-life lesson for me today which will definitely affect my band choice and antenna selection on summits and renew my interest in hunting W0C summits when on 40 meters. That was fun! Probably old news to most here, but I thought I would share. Thanks Matt! 73, Mike N8XMD
