Sticky Upcoming Activations - Post Plans Here

Quick thought.? I know most people use the SOTAwatch3 site, the SOTA Goat app or otherwise to add alerts, but does anyone have any interest in, or utter objections to, pinning a thread on this page for upcoming activation plans?? Many might be lone wolfs, or only like to hike with a select crew, etc. Understood. However, for those that are looking to just let everyone know they planning to activate within W0C soon (or elsewhere) this thread could act as an alert alternative or supplement to Sotawatch3/other applications.? For those looking for a hiking partner in crime (or misery), I figured this might be a good, permanent thread option for the page. It's just another way to dial in and distill the local activations from the widespread noise via the other alert options.? If someone has broadband service while hiking/nearing the summit, it can also be used as a last minute alter/spot. Yes, one can filter the existing tools for W0C alerts but I think this also adds an opportunity for last minute beta, suggestions, warnings, etc.? Sure, the thread might generate many emails, and some that are salty might not like the barrage of emails, but then again, if you joined an .io group, you probably don't have too much of an aversion to emails ;)? Plus, it's easy to hit delete.? My 2 cents. Thanks - Mike.?

Great idea Mike!? I support this 100% and it's better than individual emails. ?

If this topic gets to be too much, you can always mute it using the "Mute Topic" at groups.io
(another advantage of having activation posts consolidated to one topic).

Hello Fellow SOTA Activators & Chasers:

We do something similar here in W7W land.? We are not as well organized as W0C-SOTA, with a discreet .io group, but we have a core group linked via e-mail, that we broadcast to for upcoming Activations.? Some of us that use Garmin InReach, also post a hot link and password for tracking us along the route on the Garmin web site / map.? As a chaser, I have used the Garmin site to track fellow Activators, while I'm at work.? I can then take a few minutes off from work (self-employed, so I don't have to fear being fired!) and hit the radios or even drive to the top of a nearby hill for better RX of VHF / UHF sigs.

BTW: I really enjoy reading about W0C Land SOTA exploits on this .io Group!? W7W Land has everything that W0C Land has, as far as SOTA objectives, except we are -4,580 feet average elevation.? Average elevation of Colorado: 6,860 feet, average elevation of Washington State: 2,280 feet.? But, as we all know: "size does not matter".? Washington's nickname is "Little Switzerland", and pix tell the story.?

Happy Holidays & New Year, and safe Winter Activations.? We have already had our first avalanche fatality in Washington State.?

Great pictures Mark (K7MAS),
I lived and climbed in Seattle,WA for 3.5 years so I know how steep and difficult your mountains are there even though they are at much lower altitude than CO.? You guys are awesome mountaineers!

I remember the Fred Beckey years....

Really like this idea.? I'm off in the Pacific Northwest for family Christmas stuff, but will definitely be open to having a someone join me for some activiations when I get back in W0C land.

I'll be looking to get out this coming week, maybe a few times. At this point I'm primarily looking to stay within proximity of Pikes Peak, but would consider peaks a couple hours away if we could get a super early start. Ideally, I try to start hiking around sunrise or before. Shout if anyone's interested.?

Upcoming Activation Notice:

Robert/N?QLR & Steve/wG?AT activating Blue Mtn W?C/SP-123 tomorrow?
Robert on VHF and I will be on HF/CW (of course!)?
ETA ~1700z hoping to beat the rain/snow moving in.?

APRS beacon on trail:
Welcome all chasers & S2Ss

Steve/wG?AT

Both N0QLR & WG0AT are currently on Blue Mountain calling CQ at 11:00AM or 18:00UTC and N0QLR needs two more contacts. Myself K0FYR and K0MGL already got him.

They are on W0C/SP-123 if anyone can go over and help him out.

Mike - K0FYR

Sorry, they are on simplex 146.520MHz and this is 01/08/2022 @ 11:00AM or 18:00UTC

Mike… I’m in Michigan right now, so no help.? But let them know each of them can descend out of the activation zone (82 feet) and be a contact for the other.? That gets em one more contact.

Thanks everyone! I was able to get the remaining 2 QSO's for a point activation. I appreciate you guys placing spots and rallying to help me get that one in. It was a great morning in the mountains!?

Planning to try to activate McReynolds Peak - W0C/FR-120 tomorrow early AM.?? Hitting the trail at 5am and will hopefully be beaconing APRS as KN0MAP-7.?? I've set the mobile up as a digipeater and it works here at the QTH, so should also work over there on the south slope.???? If time permits on the descent, I will also activate Sheep Mountain - W0C/FR-121

Look for my SPOT on SOTAWatch, will try to be on 146.52 for locals, and 40m (7.182) / 20m (14.347) SSB.

Additional activators are welcome to join me if you'd like - however I do plan to take it easy on the approach so don't expect a fast run up the mountain.???

Headed off to activate Fairburn Mtn. (W0C/SR-053).? Looking to mess around with 2 meter SSB a bit, in addition to 2m FM, and 20m HF.? If anyone has a 2m SSB capable radio and is willing to listen in and chase, I'd appreciate it. Should be up around 1:00 p.m., give or take 45 minutes or so. I'll be adding/updating alerts/spots on the SOTA Goat app when I can. Thanks!?

Hey Mike, I’ll listen for you on 2m SSB in Littleton, I should be able to hit Fairburn from here ?

Mike, I game for trying some VHF action with you, but looking at topo maps I am geographically undesirable from my present location in the Lake George area...but my stuff is pack-a-along / mobile and I have a some directivity plus a little power so I might be able to get to a spot in the time remaining before you arrive on station to make something happen, and perhaps with a favorable bounce or two we might be able to make contact. Let me know the best way to reach you real time and maybe we can quickly game plan a bit.?

Tnx

Steve

Sorry I didn't reply earlier to any of the emails as I had jumped in the car immediately after launching my morning post.? I pretty much had zero cell reception after I hit Golden Gate Park for the rest of the day, except for a rare half second when I was able to spot on 20m a singe time (luckily).?

@Dave/N0DET and Tim/W0TX - Thanks for catching me on 2m SSB today!? I really appreciate it!? Also, thanks for the spots Dave!
@ Steve/K5SJC - Sorry we weren't able to connect!? I appreciate you reaching out. I tried writing a few emails back when I parked, but I didn't have any luck, unfortunately.?
@Bob/K0NR - I'm going to try to make 2m SSB part of the regular routine.? I'll reach out next time I head out! Thanks!

2m SSB was pretty cool. I'm curious how far I can stretch things with 10W on the IC-705. Until next time!? 2M-FM was QUIET today...I have no idea if my path wasn't ideal, although I was able to hit Dave in Longmont, so I have no idea what was going on. Just one of those days I guess. Ha.

I also only made 2 contacts on 20m SSB today as well. I could have grabbed some more but it was already getting late in the day so I just called things early.? Not sure if my setup was messing things up or if I just wasn't getting out for another reason.? Not being able to spot definitely had a serious effect I believe. Also, 10W on SSB isn't the greatest as everyone knows.? Another reason why I'm working towards CW!!? Strange day for contacts, but it was great working 2m SSB.? Also, any day hiking in great weather, and practically no wind, is a win in my book!
