First CW activation

I can't remember who it was, but someone recently made a comment on the list about activators posting stories and pictures to our group so that others could live vicariously through them... so this is such a post :)

My friend Mark N0MRK made his first CW only activation on Mt Croiser.? He's been working on CW everyday for quite a while making continuous?improvement and decided that he wasn't even going to take a mic with him this trip to keep from talking himself out of doing it.
?
He had a very successful activation on 15 meters, with his very first contact F4WBN Christian in France! Always a thrill to work some DX on a summit, but having DX be the first contact on the first ever CW activation was pretty exciting.

We ended up having to ditch the plan to do West Crosier in the same trip due to the incoming storm getting a little too close for comfort, but Crosier was a huge success.? Congrats Mark!??

James,
?
I enjoyed contacting both of you S2S yesterday.? You certainly did a fine job on Crosier, which is one of my favorite local peaks.??
?
You might have got up there a bit late, but you missed the major solar flare that exploded at 1520Z, with serious fade effects lasting until about 1700Z.? When I first got on just after 1600Z, 30M was almost useless.
?
I was glad that I could hear and work N0MRK on 15M - and he handled the S2S really well!? 15M actually was a good choice yesterday.
?
Also it was great to contact Steve WG0AT again on Mount Herman, and hear you do that also!
?
Also managed to have a quick SSB contact with Sean KF0IHL on Threemile Mountain W0C/SP-107 in South Park, probably only possible from Mount Pence on 40M - only because he was spotted on SOTAwatch.?
?
40 and 30M often work for local in-state contacts when higher frequencies do not.??

Carey,
It was great to work you (and WG0AT!!) too.? We had a great day. We ended up on top about an hour later than originally expected, but as you mentioned, that worked out as the K was 9+ when we were supposed to arrive and down to 3 when we actually got there.

I never ended up moving off 30 meters, but it was in such great shape by then I really enjoyed it.? Always great to work the local folks (worked Gary and Martha too!)? Had the usual bent pipe to California and Arizona so got out a little further than the typical 300~400 miles.

I was having a decent activation, but the wind got pretty strong and caused some cold fingers in addition to a little light headed-ness (it's allergy season so I am sucking wind a little more than normal right now) so my sending was starting to suffer a little more than usual by the time I worked you and Steve.? We got it done though!

Looking forward to seeing everyone at the spring dinner (hint hint) :)

Thanks positive comments! I had a great first activation cold fingers and all. Still really stoked that my first contact was F4WBN in France, I was not expecting that at all.?
?
Activation tip if you do a summit with James:? Hide in the in trees out of the wind and he'll wander around looking for you while you finish your activation and help you pack up when you're done.?
?
Thanks again James for a great day on the trail and encouragement leading up to my first CW activation!
