Re: Brand new Palstar LA-1K and brand new Palstar HF Auto, can't get them to work...
Yes, those are the parts needed. Follow the wiring chart. And, yes those wires in the cable are ultra-thin gauge. I found the best way to strip the insulation is just to use your fingernails to strip them... yep they're that fragile. The connector has screw terminals... but, I had trouble using them and wanted a more dependable connection. So, I soldered the wires to the pads on the underside of the board instead. It's kind of tedious, but doable with patience and some clamps to hold things while you solder. Picture attached. Good luck. Mine set up is working FB! Dirk:
Earlier today I also posted an answer to your question and how I solved the same issue you're having. Not sure if you saw it. Yes, the correct cable is an Ameritron DB-10MY, which I also mentioned in my reply to your inquiry. The problem for me was that cable is out of stock nearly everywhere. I called Ameritron and they confirmed it was out of stock. Hopefully, they'll start producing them again soon. In the meantime, I had to build my own cable and provided you links to enable you to do the same. Good luck finding the right cable or building one. Joe WW8X |

Kent I know what?you mean. I do build a lot of stuff, but when it comes to things like a control cable I'd rather buy premade instead of trying to round up the individual parts needed to make one. Coax, I'd much rather make my own, just antennas a baluns, but for a lot of things my time is a lot more important to me.? On Mon, Feb 13, 2023 at 12:02 PM Kent Trimble, K9ZTV <k9ztv@...> wrote:

Re: Brand new Palstar LA-1K and brand new Palstar HF Auto, can't get them to work...
Kent,
Thank you for replying to my humble request for help in getting my?new Palstar LA-1K and brand new Palstar HF Auto and new Yaesu FT DX-10 to work well together. My call sign is AJ6XW. My name is Dirk. After waiting many, many months, I am super excited to get my rig, amplifier, tuner, antenna, etc. all working well.? I have been working so hard to study, pass my exams, build antennas, etc.? I am a total rookie at amateur radio and I am learning a lot, often on a daily basis. One of the first lessons I learned in amateur radio was that there are a lot of cranky, old fart operators that struggle with pride and arrogance as well as an overweening sense of superiority.? Most of them are incredibly negative and chronically toxic.? Yep, they make the terrible mistake of believing that the more they accumulate knowledge, the more superior they become.? They miss the truth that knowledge puffs up, but loves builds up! Thank you for broadcasting in a manner that enables the entire world to see your rude, proud and arrogant attitude.? You should be ashamed of yourself Kent!? It is people like you that have given amateur radio a terrible name and reputation all over the world. I just got off the phone with Palstar, and with politeness and courtesy they informed me that Palstar LA-1K will not work without a cable.? What a far cry from your replies! In humility I came to this groupsio site and I asked a super simply request that was met with incredible rudeness and arrogance!? Wow, and this is my very first post/experience at groups.io. Unfortunately, your reply was very similar to several of the posters at QRZ when I first started asking questions.? Most of the people at QRZ have been super kind and helpful, but others were in terrible bondage to chronic, toxic negativity and incredible levels of sickening pride and arrogance. And now to help others that are in humility seeking the correct answer to the same question I asked: My question: what specific cables are people using for the interface between the Palstar LA-1K and the Yaesu FT DX-10? The correct answer is: According to Palstar, the Palstar LA-1K will not work without a cable.? The LA-1K requires a special cable to work with the Yaesu FT DX-10.? The correct cable is: Ameritron Band Data Interface Cables DB-10MY |

开云体育Thanks, Eric.? I figured it was just a typo. But ... Without casting aspersions on you or anyone else, permit me a reflection (not even close to a rant): Buying "pre-made" seems to be everyone's easy-way-out these days, which, of course, teaches nothing.? What could be simpler than tracing a wire from a pin on one end to the appropriate pin on the other end and installing an appropriate plug according to a pin-out diagram? Sadly and invariably, the "pre-maders" are Extra Class licensees. Sad.? Very sad. 73, Kent K9ZTV On 2/13/2023 11:21 AM, Eric Clanton

Re: SWR High SSB ONLY - When Using LA-1K Amp
开云体育The 7300 was/is notorious for overshoot, unless it's been corrected.?The overshoot (RF output from the 7300 spiking considerably higher than the LA-1K likes) causes the LA-1K to protect itself by kicking to STBY. 73, Kent K9ZTV On 2/13/2023 9:19 AM, Bob WB8CAC wrote:

Re: Brand new Palstar LA-1K and brand new Palstar HF Auto, can't get them to work...
开云体育You give no call sign so one cannot tell how experienced you might be with amateur radio, nor can it be determined what you might be doing wrong because you give no information as to what you are actually doing. The LA-1K requires no interface cable.? It is RF sensing, which means it automatically changes bands when it detects RF from a transceiver. The only reason for using an interface cable is if you want the LA-1K to change bands AS you change bands on the transceiver.? Since you are exciting it with a Yaesu rig, you would need to install a female DB9 plug on one end of the interface cable for insertion into the upper of the two DB9 (DE9 if you prefer) jacks on the back of the LA-1K.? The other end of the cable would need the Mini-DIN 10P plug which, according to page 8 of the FTDX-10 manual, is an accessory available from Yaesu:? "Linear Amplifier Connection Cable (Mini DIN 10P - Bare Wire)? SCU-28." The "bare wire" means you must supply the DB9 plug and wire it correctly.? Many are available, but I prefer the breakout board plug from Winford:? which is fast and requires no soldering. The model you want is "BRKEGD9F-T B" which uses spring terminals (easier than screws), thumbscrews (no screw driver), and revision B (much improved). Are you an SSB op or a CW op?? This makes a difference when it comes to determining whether to use NORMAL mode or DIRECT mode. You are welcome to email me so I can give you my phone number and we can talk more specifically. What we also need to discuss is how successfully you are using the HF-AUTO.? Faults attributed to the LA-1K are often faults detected by the HF-AUTO which, more often than not, are faults lying within the overall antenna system. 73, Kent K9ZTV k9ztv@... 开云体育That cable won't work at all.?Both jacks on the LA-1k are DB9 (DE9, if you prefer).? Nine pins, not 15. It WILL work if you cut the 15 pin plug off and install a DB9 plug. 73, Kent K9ZTV On 2/13/2023 7:53 AM, Eric Clanton

Re: Brand new Palstar LA-1K and brand new Palstar HF Auto, can't get them to work...
To key the amp you need to activate the PTT (push to talk). The FTDX10 doesn't have a PTT RCA jack, so you must use a specific cable,?refer to page 11 in the FTDX10 manual. I ran into the same issue of figuring out a way to key my amp. Unfortunately, the correct cable (DB-10MY)?was not available at the time that I needed it (It still may not be). I had to make my own cable. Refer to these links to get an idea of what you may need to do if you can't locate the?correct cable. The cable referenced above (dxe-acomss-ysu10) may not work as it states the cable is for Acom amps only. But, if it really does work then you're good to go. I'm just not familiar with that cable. Re: Digital modes and fast temperature rise
My LA-1K will do the 200-250 watts FT8 described by KT3V, but only on lower frequency bands - might actually do more, haven't tried that much lately.
But on 10 & 12 meters, it will only do about 175 watts (200w for awhile as temp increases) before getting into the mid 70 deg C range. Am running mine on 120 Vac and never run it any higher than upper 70 deg C (and even then, only rarely and for a short time). |
Re: Digital modes and fast temperature rise
As I recall the continuous commercial service (CCS) rating for the LA-1K is about 225W output using 240VAC power line.? And the SWR needs to be as close to 1:1 as possible.? Depending on room temperature and humidity the LA-1K should run for weeks without overheating.? I typically run FT8 on any band without problems using 200-250 Watts output.? KT3V |
