Re: Spindle belt for my MFC Mill ( FYI )

Thanks Nelson. I guess I missed the part about it being 29".?

Re: Spindle belt for my MFC Mill ( FYI )

M1-58 is just Atlas' proprietary part # that has no relation to the size of the belt. As some others have already pointed out it takes a 29" belt.
https://www.vbeltguys.com/products/m158-atlas-replacement-belt?srsltid=AfmBOooujRnF0Q7pQGyauW8hoX_QxrKc2zFDDCghKizxTSyqjS-09_oJ

Spindle belt for my MFC Mill ( FYI )

All of the parts list in the files section for the MFC horizontal mill list the spindle belt as a m1-58s. I rodered a belt for it and it is no where close to the correct length. 58 designates the inside length of the belt 58"? if you were to measure the outside of the belt it would be 60" . The belt I recieved is the correct belt for those lengths but is almost twice as long as the belt that is on the machine. I guess the only way I am going to get a felt that will fit is to ttake the segmented belt off and measure the length of it with it stretched out flat. Pretty disapointing because i have a little over $38 in a belt that I have no use for and I doubt the seller will refund my money because he shipped what I ordered. Unless someone else knows how to interpret the part number M1-58s the part number is totally wrong.? Just a FYI

Keep in mind that industrial belts are measured from the inside whereas automotive belts are measured by the outside.?

I've had HF link-a-belts on my lathe for 15-20 years (maybe more), no issue that I can see.

There are those who think the link-belts are too abrasive to the Zamak pulleys. ?While I have no personal experience with current linked belts, years ago, linked belts were made softer, maybe from leather? ?What I see for linked belts is at Horrible Freight, and that stuff seems very stiff.

Terry,

?

I rebuilt my MFB a couple of years ago and bought a new belt from McMaster-Carr.? This was the 5L300 part #.? My mill has the two step pulley in the milling head.? There are some three step pully models out there that would probably use a different belt.?

I have the MFC mill. I am going to change the spindle bearings so I need to order the correct spindle belt before taking the mill apart. Parts diagram says M1-58S. What does the S mean. I can find a M1-58 A and a M1-58B. any help would be appreciated.?

I already have a inked belt on it and I do not like it. It rubbs the casting on the head stock.?

Re: Which belt for my MFC mill

Mine is a n MF, but IIRC it uses a 3/8" or 3L belt, not an A or B belt. Can't quite get to it right now. When I can I'll check and let you know. I know I bought 3L linkbelt for it.

You may want to consider using a link-belt as a replacement. Works wonders for a lot of machines. And reduces noise, too.

I can¡¯t read the numbers on mine, but the belt (almost new) measures 5/8¡± wide at the top which I believe means it¡¯s the B size. It seems awfully heavy for the mill, but is basically flush with the top of the pulleys when running.?

Re: Looking for information on the Atlas mill

No, it's not a stepper Mike. It's a raising block so that I can lift the assembly to the reuired height and secure it to my EW (2.5") lathe.
This might help explain it better. In use, I also fit a small slotted boring table to the lathe. I can then mill small pieces in my "indoor" workshop, as my main workshop (where I keep my larger kit) is unheated and at the bottom of the garden - so not so inviting in the Winter. The vertical unit also fits directly on the cross-slide of my Myford S7 but with out the raising block.? The 'backgear' is on the MF mill and is engaged with a (hard to access) pin - which wouldn't "go-in". I thought I'd damaged the pulley but had to strip it down to check. I think it was just accumulated gunk but you cannot get at it in-situ...

Neato set up Ian ! Is that a stepper on the bottom of the bottom of the Taig milling jig ? Are you talking bout the backgear on the MILL OR THe? TAIG SETUP ?

I've found a fixure table very useful, mine is just some scrap plate, drilled & tapped with a pattern of 6mm holes.? I do quite a lot of work with 2MT milling & drilling chucks mounted directly in the spindle. You can end drill longer work pieces that you could not do in a vertical mill or drill stand. The picture may not be too clear but here I am milling two flats in a work piece held in an ER32 collet block.
?
?
?
The mill also came with a 'homemade' vertical milling head that can be driven by a pulley mounted in the spindle.? It also has an 2MT spindle and works quite well but is a little speed limited. For using smaller cutters I have made a mounting plate for my Taig milling head but not got round to finishing that yet as I had an issue with the backgear and (having stripped down the head) decided to replace all the bearings and do a general re-build (which I should probably have resisted but it will be all good when completed!)
?
I don't have? photo of the Taig on the MF but here is the Taig set-up on a vertical slide (as used on my lathe). Hopefully you can imagine this mounted on the MF instead..

?
In fact, this YT shows the same idea in use... ?? ?

Hope all this helps. The MF is small but still very useful.

Enjoy using yours!

Re: Looking for information on the Atlas mill

Ian, Love the "fixture plate" idea! I made a milling/boring plate that fits over the pintel on the cross slide of my 618, you helped me realize I can also use it on the mill as well for those times when the limited slots aren't where they need to be. Thanks ??
