Help Identifying Conversion History 1986 Syncro with 6cyl Subaru
16
recently purchased a repainted blue 1986 Syncro with a six cylinder Subaru conversion. CarFax shows car has lived in Oregon, Washington and Idaho over the years, changing hands mote often in the past few years. Appears to have rebuilt transmission as case looks fresh. Vehicle came with no documentation so I am hoping to find out who did the conversion, and the harness, any info on the transmission and other helpful facts so I can avoid duplicating work already done. Thanks in advance if you can help I.D. This van.

Switching from Kennedy adapter to RJES
16
I have run for many trouble free years using the Kennedy adapter. The adapter plate itself is dissolving quite extensively. I happen to have an rjes bellhousing kit kicking around that I may want to use in the event that the adapter plate is toast. Does anyone know if the subie starter motor has any interference issues w the diff lock assembly? This is in a syncro. Any info/thoughts are appreciated.

rear springs
4
I looked at the digest and many of the rear spring threads are pretty old. Is there new information out there? I am most likely sitting on original springs front and back (84 westie, ej22 conversion, VW transaxle). The rear end really drops when starting out in 1st gear. GoWesty specifically their springs are not for vehicles with engine conversions. Small Car has springs for 'spirited' driving (not sure if I do that). Does anyone have any other recommendations? I did the rear springs in the 84 tin top I have (1.9 WB) this past summer because one broke so I have the bug to do the westie. Thanks.

Note: I see a few folks had trouble doing PayPal and a few others asked if they could send me money directly. For the first issue - I¡¯ll update my instructions to explain the PayPal steps better. For the second issue - I accepted personal donations for several years and found out that it was more difficult to track and maintain funds (keeping track of your money) during the year. Besides, there was always that temptation to abscond with the 200 something bucks and live another year in Mexico!! So no donations accepted to my personal PayPal, sorry. Again, thanks for your ongoing subaruvanagon posts and your financial support. best, Brent Weide

2023/24 Membership For Another Year of SubaruVanagon
6
Morning Folks. It¡¯s been 4 years since we migrated our group off of yahoo groups over here to Groups.io. To give you a short history, we migrated in 2019 and have run off of membership funding since that time. Our group uses more than the allotted 1 gig of photo/attachment/files storage which is available for a free group. A poll/vote was held in November of 2020 wherein members voted to maintain all of our content and fund the group. The next step up from free is the Premium Group which is how we roll. Our group fee of USD $220.00 is due on Monday, December 5, 2023 for the next twelve months. We still have $51 left over from last years donations. So - we¡¯re hoping to get $169 this year. In years past I asked for donations to be made directly to me as I am ultimately responsible for the payment to Groups.io. But now, I¡¯ve configured the group to allow donations/sponsorships through a newly available built-in function. I believe this will make things easier on you, the supporting member. There¡¯s a minimum sponsorship amount of $5.00 USD. I¡¯ll track the sponsorship activity/amount and once we reach our goal I¡¯ll send another notification to you all and disable the sponsorship link. Wondering how to sponsor us? Go to the home page at /g/SubaruVanagon/ Click on the ¡°+ Sponsor This Group: button. Or, if you want to save a step, browse directly to /g/SubaruVanagon/sponsor Fill out the form fields to complete your sponsor donation via PayPal or Credit Card. Depending on where you live in the world, there may be additional payment methods available to you. Thanks very much for your continued support of the SubaruVanagon group. Your shared knowledge, conversion support posts, and sponsorship, are very much appreciated. Best, Brent Weide - moderator (and Mr. Tom Shiels- moderator)

High and sticky RPM
71
Hey everyone, I am reaching out because I am really getting stuck. I did my EJ25 conversion and my motor runs!. But my van has and extremely high idle at 2000 and if you increase the RPMs they never go back down. So if I throttle it will jump up to 3000 and not come back down, I have to go turn off the motor. What I have done so far is check the cables for sticking. I took apart the TPS sensor and checked it. I took apart the IAC sensor and checked it. All the sensors are brand new, I replaced everything during the installation. I also cleaned the entire throttle body. I hooked up the ODB2 reader and I do get red on CAT and O2S but it also says No Data is Stored on Vehicles Computer. My next step is to adjust the .5 on the TPS. Maybe a vacuum leak? Anyone got any good ways to look for leaks?

Hi Billy,
2
I have a 90¡¯ Syncro with an EJ25 and I have the exact same RPM issues as Billy. My VSS sensor is working properly and showing close to correct speed on the OBDII reader. I have cleaned all throttle body sensors and and just the TPS to .500. Any other advice? thanks!

EJ22 AC compressor fitment guidelines?
3
I have a 1990 EJ22 fitted into my 1983 Westfalia. No factory AC, and no compressor or associated brackets are installed on the engine. One belt from the crank pulley to the alternator. No PS pump, electric PS only. I want to install a Small Car vintage air kit, which means also installing a compressor and evaporator up front as well. I can search for and find Four Seasons remanufactured AC compressors for these older EJ22 engines, as well as brackets on eBay, but I'm wondering if this is the best option. Similar to the easy modern upgrades for the alternator (I'm running a 2001 Legacy 90 amp unit that is PnP), I'm wondering if there are newer model Subaru AC compressors that can swap into the stock brackets on these older engines. Perhaps something that is still available OEM, as I am not too keen on cheap remanufactured units in general. To that end, I'm also wondering if anyone has advice about hose fitment of later compressors at it relates to engine orientation and space in the Vanagon engine bays. Are there obvious choices people running Subaru's in Vanagons are making for their AC compressors?

vanagon dash lights for alternator and oxygen sensor lights
9
Hi folks, I have an ej22 in an '84' Westy. Have not had an issue for over 10 years. Last week the dash lights for both the alternator and oxy sensor began staying on after the engine starts. I also have gauges installed and the alternator shows 14+ volts. Any help diagnosing this issue would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Bill

How to tell if an engine still has compression when out of the car?
I had a great running '92 Subie in a bus when the bus rusted out. I now have a bus with a great body and want to move the engine into it. However, the engine has been sitting for about 6 years. Most of it in the garage and for a while covered but outside. It turns (not seized), but from the flywheel I can turn it by hand. Some areas easy, some areas with difficulty. I never tried this with an engine by hand before, but I guess I expected the engine to put up more of a fight when I was pushing against a closed cylinder on the compression stroke. On the other hand, starter motors are not all that powerful either... Any tips for a health check of the engine? I guess I'll start with a leak-down test? ...Markus

Updates to a rebuild
5
*Yawn* I¡¯m hungry. Though I'm coming out of hibernation, I have not been idle regarding Freedom van Go: Rebuilt engine with new gaskets, seals, hoses, o-rings and PVC valve (excluding internals) Jets cleaned and calibrated Heads rebuilt New H2O pump Alternator rebuilt New Spark plug wires and ignition coils New SS exhaust system and O2 sensors Calibrated ECU for best fuel/performance ratios Upgraded aluminum transmission cooling pan and throttle cable Upgraded to high performance braking system (calibers, pads, disks and SS hoses) New wheel bearings and seal Re-upholstered seats, cushions and panels Repainted to stock Wolfram Grey (gone is the 70¡¯s look!) All ground connections cleaned with dash and engine wiring harnesses cleaned up and checked for continuity. Added a USB/Voltmeter and two switches for a future front LED light bar and a backup camera with LED lights. Despite all these upgrades, my feeble brain could not justify new cabinetry. I suspect I will regret this decision. (I¡¯m looking at you Rhino!) T@P (Transporters at the Park) is iffy. I¡¯ve only driven around the block, which is not enough to verify there are no oil leaks. Plus, there are a few more things needed to finish, including firmly reinstalling the dash. On a side note, as well done as the Bentley schematics are, they still suck. They are confusing as all git-out. There are 5 different sections for a water-cooled, Digafant vanagon: 1986 up VIN G 055 690, 1986 from VIN G 055 690, 1997, 1988/1989 and 1990. Not one of them match Freedom. The number of fuses, their locations and the amps are off. The optional accessories are in different tracks between models and the connectors on the harnesses do not match. One would think the 1988/1989 schematic would be right. It is not. For instance, there are only 22 fuses listed. Freedom has 27. The 1986 model has 27 fuses but they do not correspond to the same locations or accessories. Freedom has two separate connectors for the cigarette lighter, a connector for a radio amp (no amp) and other inconsistencies. This does not include the schematics for Campers, Syncros, amplified radio or not and Canadian models, each of which have their own numerous variations. The best I¡¯ve been able to decipher is that the wiring harness is a bastardization of them all. At least the Owners Manual is right, except there are modifications due to the conversion. Ergh! Whew, what a project. Almost 3 years on the rack, which commanded adding HVAC to the shop, which was perhaps the least expensive upgrade during the whole process. The main reason for this post is to primarily acknowledge and thank all the dealers and suppliers that had great patience with me and very often the resolve to source NLA items: Injector RX, Sewfine, Van Cafe, RMW, Smallcar Performance, Rock Auto, Bus Depot, Burley Motor Sports, Control Cables of CA, Texas Alternator, Navarro¡¯s in Los Algondos, SubaruOnlineParts.com and a few, forgotten others. And as a sounding board for my electrical gripes. I¡¯m sure others doing conversions have encountered the same. Heads up, if not. ;) Finally, thank you for the support from members of this group. You're the best. Duncan -- Freedom van Go 1989 Westy, 3.3L SVX

tuning an ecu
Just seeing the thread mentioning tuning an ecu, I was wondering f there are opinions on the pros and cons of doing this? I put a EJ25 from a 2000 Outback in my 82 Vanagon and have been quite happy but a bit more power and/or mileage might be nice. Al
