vanagon dash lights for alternator and oxygen sensor lights

Hi folks,
I have an ej22 in an '84' Westy. Have not had an issue for over 10 years.? Last week the dash lights for both the alternator and oxy sensor began staying on after the engine starts. I also have gauges installed and the alternator shows 14+ volts. Any help diagnosing this issue would be greatly appreciated.?

Thanks, Bill

Sounds like a question for the VW guys on theSamba. Is the O2 counter in the 2 piece speedometer cable still connected (disconnect it) or is this light for check engine (check for codes). Check your alt wiring at alternator and black box connections?

Why would that be a VW question ? it’s the result of the engine swap ?,? have similar symptom but it only came to light after I installed my second EJ 2.2 (OBD1) . The big difference .. I put in a big bosh alternator (one with the 2 prong connector ) vs the old 3 prong. I have searched and done the suggested mods to do with the fridge etc. it’s a dim light I only see it in the dark which makes it easy to ignore . so far the battery seems fine? also charging 14 V according to scan software . direct battery check is perfect.

?

Now the VW question is how to keep the gauge cluster from clicking on cold startup for 20-30 min. also easy to forget when you get home !

Cheers

M

OXS light is always on when ALT is, so that's not an issue.? It's done as a key-on lamp test.

Mark, I have the EXACT same issue after replacing an ancient Subaru alternator on my EJ22 with one off Amazon.? (I figured brushes and bearings might be near their end, and alternators are cheap.)? Same very dim glow on alternator light.....but everything charges just fine and runs just fine including auxiliary house battery, now more than 2 years.

Perhaps Brent can chime in:? http://www.weidefamily.net/vanagon/Pending_Content/Engine_Conversion/14Alternator/VanagonAlternatorChargeLightFix.pdf

Thanks for this link. I have the same issue. This looks to be for later vans. Is it the same for an 84 with the "pill" fuses?

Hey Bill, good morning.?
One of the other members already posted my pdf (thanks) on the alternator light fix.?
Because 84 was a transitional year for the Vanagon it’s hard to know if your wiring is the same as that shown on my diagrams without grabbing a cups and having a sit down with the Bentley schematics. First thing I’d suggest doing is checking for a relay under the driver seat.?
Found one? Apply the fix.?
O2 light answer will require some wire chasing to find how it’s connected. Many folks have used the O2 light as a MIL (malfunction indicator light) for the suby ecu. If your conversion results in no ecu trouble codes (pretty rare but possible) the use of the light makes sense. But most of my finished conversions had expected, benign trouble codes and I just couldn’t cope with that light staying on.?
Best of luck.?
Brent?

Good point.? My answer re the OXS light assumed stock wiring.?
