Re: Main relay stays on with engine off, key out!

All,? I thought I'd post what was finally discovered.? There was a wiring issue in the main harness.? While I was able to isolate it to the harness as described above, I thought I'd visit with the Rocky Mountain Westy (RMW) team that made the harness a few years ago.? They tore it out, found the problem, fixed it and I was camping by the weekend.? Those guys at RMW continue to impress me as to their customer service and talents.? I'm just glad I didn't have to tear the harness out - I wasn't looking forward to that learning curve.

Re: Subaru temp sender

Hello,
? On both of the ej22 conversions that I have done, I have simply used a series resistor with the subie sender. You can try various values to get a reading around middle range on the gauge when the engine is hot.? I used lower values than the commonly recommended 22 ohms.? Mine were closer to 11 ohms.? The power rating of the resistor should be at least 1 watt.

Re: Looking for an EJ22

If you're going to go new short block which I highly recommend after my experiences get a hold of me.? ?on a road trip I ended up buying one in Oregon no sales tax so that was fun and got a litttle deal off of list price. My rep at that dealer said she would be willing to replicate that for others if they just send a postage label. What I calculated is the postage was less then the tax to overall ended up being a good deal - either free tax or free shipping depending how you look at it.? ?Of course compare against your local person see how much it is out the door. But remember you won't have any warranty on that new block. I'm super happy with how my new short block is performing

Never overheated and was cruising at about 3500 rpm when it happened. Coolant temps just started to climb (max was 195*F) when the oil pressure light popped on and I immediately shut it down and pulled over. I was climbing a steep grade prior but it was 1am and about 45*F ambient, and my coolant temps were steady at 180*F the entire time pulling that hill. It¡¯ll be a month or so before I have time to really dive in, but I¡¯ll shoot a borescope down the cylinders and pull the oil pan and pressurize the cooling system and see if I find anything, I imagine it¡¯ll be pretty obvious.?

You can get hour meters at the local marine store . What state are you in . in California Im not sure they would be OK with an aftermarket odometer . had to rebuild one for my MG .

Re: Subaru temp sender

Lots of good advice and options above. FWIW, we have an OBD2 Scan Gauge mounted in a clever little 3D-printed holder from GoWesty that clips on the dashboard above the steering column. We also added a VW sensor port in the Subaru cooling loop that feeds the temp gauge in the instrument panel. Didn't try it, but I believe a 28 ohm resistor in series with the Subaru temp sensor feed will drive the VW temp gauge pretty reliably.?

Re: Looking for an EJ22

Not sure yet. I was initially thinking head gasket but it¡¯s beginning to appear to be more catastrophic than that. I haven¡¯t pulled it apart yet, and it didn¡¯t overheat. I drained the oil pan and found more than a gallon of coolant in there that hadn¡¯t yet emulsified with the oil. So it appears that the coolant dumped into the engine very quickly and I shut it down as soon as my oil light flickered on. Found bits of ferrous and non ferrous metals in the oil pan. Hopefully going to take a borescope to it when I have some more time on my hands.

Super disappointed, hopefully I¡¯ll hear back from steve this week to see if we can work out some sort of warranty coverage. If not I¡¯ll need to source something else. Hopefully the heads are still ok, but I haven¡¯t had time to pull them yet.

Re: Subaru temp sender

Hi Maciek,

I added a VW temp sender to the Subaru manifold to feed the dash gauge and? has worked perfectly for ~85,000 miles so far!

9MM drill bit, 1.0 x 10MM tap (I think...)

Subaru engines ground connection is under intake manifold--inaccessible. Installing a new ground wire to a bolt on the intake solved several issues for me.

Also? are you sure your new injectors have new seals properly installed?

Thinking i might be running lean. O2 sensors at 0 volts at idle. Seem?to operate through rest of throttle range as they should up to 0.9 volts. I checked fuel pressure and believe i am within spec based on what is in my?factory service manual. I am at 31-32 psi with vacuum 41-42 psi without.

The same is true when cleaning up IACV or Throttle Body.? You have now just introduced new parameters....that is, a clean system.? ECU is not familiar with these new parameters.? No sweat..it will learn...just give it time.
