Remoting a LA-1K with Flex 6400
13
Just went to the TRX-Manager website, and looks like the developer isn't selling the program anymore, but is supporting updates only to previous purchasers. Disappointing, as I just got my LA-1K Does anyone know of an alternative program to remote operate this amp? I have a Flex 6400 radio, and would at least like remote capability to change the Mode from Standby to Operational during tuning with the HF-AUTO, then be able to put amp back to OPR mode once tuned. Thanks, Bob W8RBD

Maximum SWR
I have a multiband yagi that covers 6 thru 40m. On 40m, one of the capacitance spokes on the director fell off, and the SWR on my net frequency went from 1.5:1 to 2.0:1. The finals in the LA1K are rated at 65:1 SWR, so I am not concerned about the finals, and the amp is working fine with 30W drive and approx 500W out. The amp is reading 1.9 SWR and the HF-AUTO in bypass is reading 2.12:1. The HF-Auto always shows a higher SWR. What is the maximum power the amp will allow at 2:1 SWR before the protection circuit kicks in? I am not wanting to "try it" to see. I doubt it would damage the amp, but not going to risk it. BTW, the reason I am asking and not just using the HF-AUTO is because I am planning on running the antenna directly into the AMP, to free up a slot on the tower mounted 4 position coax switch. N5GGG

Bypass SWR Issue
4
Hello, Lately I've noticed the bypass SWR fault on 40 mtrs ssb. I do not have the fault on any other band or mode, including 40 mtr cw. Also, when transmitting 40 mtr ssb into a dummy load, the problem doesn't rear it's head. I've tried many different solutions, changing coax, changing surge arrestors, eliminating the coax switch and going direct, etc. The SWR through my Palstar AT2KD is dead on 1.1, however, while talking, the LA-1K floats around and after 2.5 SWR, the bypass kicks in. Keep in mind, the SWR on the AT2KD never wavers. Suggestions are welcome. Thanks, Keith/N1NRK

Band data cable with a TS-590SG much shorter TX switching
2
Just putting this in here for anyone else with a TS-590SG (likely any radio that will provide band data). I initially was running with only the PTT cable and using RF for band switching. The Kenwood has a keying delay option of 25ms to avoid hot switching. But in reality it was something at least a half second in total from the time I hit the PTT switch to the amp keying on TX. It worked but was annoyingly sluggish. I decided to try a band data cable with a null adapter (the amp wants to see the rig set to 9600b btw, won't work at faster speeds when I tried it). I could finally set the menu to option 2 which is no delay and now the amp keys like most any other, single or low double digit ms timing, far far faster. Now I can use VOX with out the sloppy keying and it's much more responsive to manual PTT keying. Much less doubling with people now. Happier with this for sure. -- 73 de Chris -- KC2RGW ------------------------------------------------------------ ˙dn ?p?s ????? ?o??uo? ?no? u?n? ?s???d 's??? ?u?p??? ??? no? ??

Convert the LA-1K for 2-30 MHz Operation for MARS / CAP / Gov
8
The owner must contact Palstar and submit proof of authority to operate the amp outside the Amateur Radio bands. Palstar will email you the firmware necessary to open the amp to operate anywhere in the 2 to 30 MHz (It may go higher, i.e. to 6 Meters, but I have not tested it). The CB Radio channels (26.965 to 27.405 MHz) are specifically excluded from this operation. Updating the firmware is simple, and the instructions are in the manual. If you present the out-of-band authority at the time of purchase, Palstar will load the correct firmware before shipment to you. In my testing into a 1000 Watt 50 ohm load with a Bird Watt meter my LA-1K yielded from 500 to 900 Watts output across 2 - 30 MHz with 30 Watts input. My amp is wired for 240 VAC.

Looking at LA-1K
40
Hello group, I currently use Kenwood TS-890S + Palstar HF-AUTO + Expert 1.3K-FA. I am considering replacing the Expert 1.3 with the LA-1K. Any insights, opinions, etc? Thanks. 73, Joe K4PX

Not working after firmware update
3
I recently upgraded the firmware and everything seemed to be ok - the screen dislpayedthe 1_05b. When I turned on the amplifer this morning, I did not get the menu screen and only had a grey display. I tried to reload the firmware and even rolled back to the previous version - nothing seems to resolve this issue. Any suggestions on how this can be resolved? Thanks for your assistance Mike

White screen of death?

Havent had my amp for a week and i got a white screen instead of the nice screen. Is there any way out of this without sending it back to Ohio? Anyone else hear of this issue or is the monkey on my back still....

some input on the la1k
10
Hey guys, Jed.n1jbc here. So i'm looking at amps. In the close to 30 years of being a ham, this will be the 1st amp purchase for me. I'm visually impaired and wanna do this right. Obviously i need this thing as automatic as it can get. Palstar obviously has an awesome auto tuner. The rig here is a TS590S. So i would obviously get the amp and tuner. What else would i need? Cheers, Jed

TS-590SG band data cable?
3
I run a TS-590SG, simple to just set up the direct keying, I see that pinout easily enough in the manual. Anyone running a band data cable with one? Is it just a null modem DB9 on each side? Is keying done over that or do I still need the keying cable if I run the band data cable? I use CAT control over the USB interface currently to the PC and software, will enabling the COM port on the rig interrupt that?

Low-pass filter's change frequencies?
Goal is to learn needed details of the capabilities and limitations of using LA-1K on MARS/CAP HF frequencies prior to purchase. It is well known to use a contiguous set of low-pass filters (sometimes even band-pass filters) in the output of HF amplifiers and transceivers to ensure suppression of harmonically related or undesired emissions. Pictures of the inside of the LA-1K suggest the use of five filters to cover HF - the minimum number of less-than-octave lowpass filters. It is expected that the frequency sensing capabilities of the LA-1K are used to select the use of a particular output filter depending on the detected frequency. Thus a set of frequencies probably exist in the amplifier’s memory such that above each such frequency in the set a certain filter is selected. Call these frequencies the change-filter-frequencies (CFF). As an example, selecting “160 meters” must result in the amplifier’s use of at least a low-pass-filter that attenuates above something like 3 MHz. So one might guess that 3 MHz is a CFF and thus below 3 MHz the “160 meter" filter is used and immediately above 3 MHz the “80 meter” filter is used. Comments on the Internet note that use of the LA-1K has been effected on MARS and CAP frequencies, but without providing specificity. An additional issue could be frequency spans that are too close to a low-pas filter’s so-called cutoff-frequency. Specifically, what are the CCF used by the latest control software? If any exist, what HF frequency spans are to be avoided (other than 26 to 28 MHz)? Thanks for filling in needed information. 73 Mac N8TT

Variable SWR between HF-Auto and LA1K
4
Well, I admit I am a bit new to all this, so maybe this is a known item. I do not understand what is happening in my Tx-->LA1K-->HF-AUTO chain as far a SWR numbers go. The LA1K always shows a 1:1 to the transceiver, however the SWR from the tuner to the amp varies a good bit, and is almost always (maybe even always) higher than the reported SWR that the tuner has achieved for the antenna. So for example, my end fed wire will tune to 1.1 or less, but the LA1K always shows a 1.2:1 SWR. It seems to operate OK on this frequency and antenna, but when I try my 10m vertical the tuner will get it down to about 1.5 but the amp shows 2.1:1, and buzzes when I try to use it (at about 100W). The end fed at the same frequency gets down lower and the amp shows about 1.4:1, and no buzzing. Is there something amiss here, or is this expected behaviour?

HF-AUTO with LA-1K
5
Is there a way to connect communications between the HF-AUTO and the LA-1K, placing the LA-1K into stand-by if the SWR is high until the HF-AUTO completes tuning the SWR? I have a MFJ-998 connected to my Ameritron ALS-600 amplifier, where the MFJ-998 opens the PPT line to disable the ALS-600 until the MFJ-998 completes SWR tuning. NE7X...

160 power output
10
Have never noticed until just now my LA-1K does not make full power on 160 meters. Other bands seem to be fine. Testing into a dummy load the amp does: 40 input 720 watts 45 input 730 watts 50 input 750 watts 55 input 765 watts How many watts does it take to drive your LA-1K to 1KW on 160? Rich kd0zv

Fan Noise
29
I just unpacked a new LA-1K. Plugged it in, turned it on, and am shocked at the loud twin whirring noise made by the internal fans. Wish I had known before making the purchase. An Acom 600S I own is literally whisper quiet. Even a Quadra VL-1000 makes less noise than this amp. Are loud fans in the LA-1K normal? Jim AB4D

Disabling amplification on a specific antenna port
2
I got the la-1k and hf-auto this weekend. I also have the ICOM AT-130 (100W) mounted outside. Is it possible to specify the LA-1K to never amplify the signal on one of the antenna port so I can safely connect the AT-130 to it? It would be nice if it could, that way I wouldn't need a separate antenna switch. I guess there is another question I probably should ask. Could I just run an coax from the HF-AUTO tuner to the wire into the tree and connect the center conductor to it and the shield to ground and thus skipping the AT-130 all together? Thanks, Claus (K0TET)

SWR Reset ?
6
After my Amplifier SWR increases anytime (just a few tenths)the SWR will not decrease by itself . Cycling the amplifier on and off resets SWR back to 1.2 or less and it stays put but never decreases . My question is why does the sampling always stay at the high and not ever go down. The HF-Tuner does vary up and down a bit. I’m feeling no love with this SWR meter.
