some input on the la1k

Hey guys,

Jed.n1jbc here.
So i'm looking at amps. In the close to 30 years of being a ham, this
will be the 1st amp purchase for me.
I'm visually impaired and wanna do this right. Obviously i need this
thing as automatic as it can get. Palstar obviously has an awesome
auto tuner.
The rig here is a TS590S.
So i would obviously get the amp and tuner. What else would i need?

Cheers,

Jed

Jed I've had both for over a year you';; not be disappointed but to get full use make sure operate on 220, house currewnt not enough, will need PTT line
and no band cable, tuner amp takes care of all that.? Made for each other.? Salty but worth it.

I have found it wise to have a relay between the amp and your radio to isolate one from the other in case of a problem.

I use the Ampkeyer:

There are several different versions of amp keying relays. Some make their own, at substantially less cost.

I think you will be happy with both. I really do not agree they were made for each other despite what Palstar advertises.

?

I have had 6 or 7 Palstar tuners over the years and have had the most problems with the HF-AUTO.?? It is not a great tuner on 160 as it has issues with taking on and retuning. Terry W1TR software really improves things when it comes to 160.

?

I have also burned up a few relays in the antenna switching/bypass section and the one on back of roller inductor. This happened even when I had a 500 watt amp.? Many others have had same failures.

?

I am not sure there is anything better out there for Auto tuners but just thought I would throw this out there as its not bullet proof.

?

Palstar is a good company and my first choice for many products. Service has been outstanding.

Just an FYI I have a 590sg hooked to the la 1k hooked to a mfj 998 Auto tuner? to a my antennas 80 thru 10 long wire and have had zero problems.
Also I use an alb 704 to key the amp.

Hi Rich,
?? Interesting take you have on the HF-Auto.?? I work the pants off of mine (for over a year now) with constant QSY, retuning, and running legal limit. I tune in to some wild loads as well feeding 600-ohm line on a single dipole on all bands. (tunes them all just fine, big balun at output of tuner) I've never had it start tuning when I talk.? As for burning relays... I'm wondering what kind of loads you're using it with. With high reactive components voltages (or currents) can get very high.? When the amp is running after it's been tuned there should be no moving contacts to arc or spark.? I only tune with 20 or 30 watts then put the power to it after the tuning cycle.? These are things you probably already know, but general cautionary things for anyone using them.? I've seen people just throw the tuning carrier on with a solid state amp in line with the so-called comfort of knowing the output will self-limit until there is a match, HOWEVER, as it gets close to resonance the power comes WAY up while the roller is still moving... leaving opportunities for high-current pitting on the coil contacts.?
?? As for the new AMU-600.... this is going to be a game changer in the tuner industry.? Match occurs in milliseconds instead of the click-click-click of chattering relays looking for a match.? I can't wait to hear what people say after they put this in to service.? Only guessing, but I may assume a higher power version would be in the works.?? MFJ is advertising something that is similar with a claimed 1500 watt rating.? But being MFJ, you should cut that rating in half just for starters.? That's before you even consider the build quality from them.

Actually, I am tuning pretty forgiving ?matches. I have a dedicated BT1500 balanced line tuner for my 160 balanced line antenna but the HF-auto is in line for my inverted L (160) which has a 2:1 match (100 ohm load) and my SteppIR vertical which of course is resonant or really close.

?

That said, I think using the tuner in bypass mode causes as much issue as running it as a tuner.? The relays have 1/10 the current rating when the tuner is in bypass mode.? The last time I burned up the relays I am positive it was in bypass mode.

?

The “tuning while you talk” would be a 160 issue only ?as far as I know. I personally know a half dozen guys with HF-Autos that tune up on 160 and then put it in manual mode so it does not take off.? ?I have both the HF-Auto and AT-Auto and the HF-Auto is the only one with issues.

?

I am pretty careful about using the tuner which makes it ever more frustrating.???? As far as cooked relays you will find plenty of similar cases right here on this group.

?

As I said, I am not sure there is anything out there that is a better Auto high power tuner but for me and many others its not without issues.

I use a Ts590sg with my palstar la1k and you need to use the 7 pin DIN plug that came in the box with your radio to fabricate a simple PTT cable to run from your radio to the amplifier. It plugs into the radio remote din plug on the back of the radio. The owners manual shows the correct pin-out for the plug. I recommend you have that cable made from your spare din plug and your owners manual.

Regarding a tuner you will need an external tuner. I use a manual palstar at2k however I’ve watched my buddies palstar Hf auto tuner in action and together I believe you would be very happy.
