LA-1K Frequency display
3
Just received my new LA-1K. Love the AMP. Just wondering if anyone else has a problem with the AMP frequency display not displaying the same frequency as the transceiver? Not a big deal but thought I would ask this new group. I figure there is a way to adjust that buy don't want to open up the amp. Hayes Copeland

New amp concerns
4
Hello, Just picked up a new LA-1K to go with my HF-Auto. My first concern is that I think I have a sticky relay, I'm getting an intermittent transmit delay, and the display on the Amp says "TX Wait" anyone one else experience this ? The other is which power meter is more accurate ? the bar meter on the amp or the numerical on the HF-Auto because they both read different. Thanks

AMP FAULT CONDITIONS
AMP FAULT CONDITIONS for V1.01B FIRMWARE 1. SWR TRIP FAULT: Fault SWR stays on display until unkeyed. Occurs with 2.5:1 SWR. SWR numbers also turn RED. 2. TEMPERATURE FAULT: When temperature reaches 100 degrees C, display shows fault TEMP + unit goes to Standby Mode and can’t enable until below 70 degrees C. Numbers turn red at 70 degrees C. 3. TX WAIT FAULT: ? PTT is closed but no RF Applied. NOTE: Frequency readout must show a number from previous transmission for this otherwise it shows TX BYPASS. 4. TX BYPASS FAULT: F = RED Lock-out frequency example: 27 MHz 5. TX BYPASS FAULT: F = GREEN Unit is in STBY – NORMAL.

Ordered LA-1K from HRO. Will be here in couple days. Any special concerns, issues I need to know in firing up new amp. Will be run on 240v. Reviews on Eham look positive. Thanks. Mike KB7ME

Power meter
10
an earlier poster mentioned that the power meter on the LA-1K was inaccurate and, I guess by extension, the SWR meter as well. At the present time I do not have a separate meter. Can I rely on the LA-1K meter at all or do I need to bite the bullet and get a LP-100a which is not in the budget right now? :) Thanks, Gene K3GC

LA-1K Interface with Icom IC-7700
3
Have had my LA-1K about two weeks. Driving it with Icom IC-7700. When keying amp in cw/rtty/digi modes, see large momentary swr spike. Not seen on ssb. Drive power never more than 45 watts. Curious if anyone else seeing this. No other issues. Love the amp. Mike KB7ME

Home from Hamvention
4
All: I spent some time at the Palstar booth at the Hamvention on Sunday and was pretty impressed with what I saw. The result was that I picked up an LA-1K to replace the AL-1200 I've been using for a while and that I sold that morning. Unfortunately I didn't sell enough of my mil equipment to also get an IC-7610, so I'll have to slum it with my IC-7300 for a bit yet. Regarding the change from the AL-1200 to the LA-1K, I didn't have ALC connected with the AL-1200 since there was no way the IC-7300 was going to overdrive that amp. So, I'm now trying to tie down the ALC base level adjustment on the LA-1K and am not sure yet what I'm seeing. I probably should also revisit the compression and mic levels on the 7300. Is anyone using an IC-7300 or similar that can give me some direction or general direction on setting the ALC with the LA-1K. It was funny though, I was testing the amp into my dummy load and when I switched to 40 Meters and didn't notice it had switched to my PRO-67B. Someone heard me testing and jumped in pretty much falling over himself to say how good it all sounded. Thought I'd better ID at that point. Palstar, that's for the great amp! LA-1K Firmware summary V1.01C - V1.02B
V1.01C: Reduced transmit sequencing delay from 14ms to 3 ms. V1.02A: Unkeys amplifier with low +50V (<44V) to protect transistors from damage if supply trips as on 120V > 32A conditions. V1.02B: Replaced the word "FAULT" with "BYPASS" for SWR Trip, Thermal Trip, and LW 50V Trip. Also, color changed from Red to Green on above (except temp#) when too hot. Don't hesitate to ask if any questions. Regards, Pete Kovacs Palstar, Inc.

Use MFJ-998 Intellituner with LA-1K?
7
Hello all you happy Palstar owners - I am thinking about getting an LA-1K Amp but at least for now would want to use it with my MFJ-998 Tuner / Icom IC-7600. I wonder if any of you have used the LA-1K with the MFJ-998 Tuner. rgds & 73, Mike

RF PTT Sense
All: I've had my LA-1K connected to an IC-7300 for a couple months now and find nothing I don't like or that people who hear me don't like. - Thanks Palstar! This morning I had a thought to put one of my 4-20W military manpack radios on the amp, but then it struck me that these radios don't have TX contact out. Now you might think that's just a simple thing to bring out a TX line from the radio. It probably is, but we're talking about some completely unmodified and not particularly cheap radios that I'm not inclined to do that to. I could of course build up an outboard RF sensing to TX out unit (RF VOX) to drive the TX in on the LA-1K. But of course the Amp already senses the RF, as we know. My question then is whether it makes sense to ask Palstar to add an RF VOX feature to the firmware and what the implications of that might be. Would anyone else like this feature, have any fears, or have a favorite outboard RF sense relay circuit with adjustable drop-out delay they like? Chuck - N8DNX

Great article
I am not sure my post on the article that appeared in the "Spectrum Monitor" posted properly. If this is a duplicate I do apologize. This was a great review 73 Neil N4FN --

Low Power Output
7
I just acquired a new LA-1K yesterday, and put it in service that evening. At first, with 35 watts drive in RTTY, the unit showed output on the LA-1K watt meter plus an MFJ watt meter that I have of near 1000 watts. In fact, with 40 watts drive, the unit was showing well over 1KW output. Over the next ten minutes, I ran some on the air tests, and the unit performed perfectly, showing output of 1KW or more. However, after that short time, it quit putting out the higher power. Instead, with 40 watts output using RTTY, the output dropped to only 500 watts on both meters. I tried using two different radios on several different bands, and the result was the same. SWR as shown on the LA-1K was in the 1.2-1.6 range. I do use a tuner after the amplifier to keep SWR in control. I did all these tests with the ALC line unplugged. With a voltmeter, I verified the supplied operating voltage was 235-240 volts. Vd on the LA-1K stayed steady at 50, and Id varied a little, but was always near 23. I tried turning the amplifier on and off and all sorts of other "tests" to see if it would start to read 1KW again, but it never did go higher than 500 watts. I also tried transmitting with a straight key on CW, and on CW key down, it showed the same output as RTTY did. At no time did I drive the amplifier with over 50 watts. I email Paul at Palstar, and he told me RTTY output is only 500 watts, so that's what I should expect it to show. But, the unit was showing a solid 1KW when I first powered it on. And, on CW, the specifications in the manual indicate the output is 1000 watts, not 500. Yet, in both RTTY and CW, I am only getting readings of 500 watts. My question is, do I have a problem? Why would the amplifier first show 1000 watts out, and then moments later, drop to half that? I did email Paul at Palstar back, but so far, no response. Thanks, Bob KU5J
