Re: False "Online" with DecoderPro
After about 10 seconds that should change to red and say offline. It takes
that long for the system probe to timeout. If it stays online, check if the screen says simulator or not. Also check in preferences for the connection of simulator and in Defaults in case it has Internal selected. -Ken Cameron, Member JMRI Dev Team www.jmri.org www.fingerlakeslivesteamers.org www.cnymod.org www.syracusemodelrr.org |

Dave, Allow me to expand your knowledge a little more with "non-foklore" based on experience.? Picture this, You are in the middle of an op session with 15 friends. You are using a Digitrax system and have several OEM QSI version 6 decoder-equipped locos. As will happen, some operator runs an open switch, causes a short, and the session comes to a halt (Pre-PM42 days) . The offender "pulls" back the loco from the short area, The Digitrax system "reboots". (which feeds a heavy spike of PURE DC current onto the track because Digitrax older systems have a HUGE resonance frequency imbalance until they settle down.? Suddenly, ALL of the Version 6 locos take off at MACH 5 because the default settings include restoring the analog "conversion" to activate. Locos with strings of 20 hoppers with LIVE loads of coal, stones or ore literally FLY toward curves or through coal loading facilities or toward the sharpest curves not designed for high speed trains. (do NOT ask how I know this) . Cleanup will take DAYS as now there is coal, stones, and red ore everywhere that has been dumped by those trains. You also find locos in the turntable pit or smashed through the rear walls of the roundhouse because, it IS only plastic or wood. Some have even attempted to leap across the gap where you are using a gate or bridge to access the layout while someone needed to open it during this debacle. NOW you are talking about an exciting session where mere mortals have attempted to literally catch trains hell bent on self destruction. You BETCHA that I upgraded EVERY one of those suckers ASAP. Side note, Digitrax will sternly deny this problem as? they fixed it in later Boosters like the Zephyr but refused to upgrade older systems for FREE like their competitors . The original chip is unstable and a short circuit will usually reset them back to default CVs, which means that you will need to attempt to re-program them almost every time a short happens on the layout. That probably explains the "folklore" I've heard about QSI decoders. The only problems I've encountered have been accidental resets due to motor magnetic fields from a passing loco and the almost-universal fail-closed reed switch (solved with sidecutters). QSI decoders
Hi, you can Google QS Industries and get their E-mail address. They are located in Beaverton, OR and ask your questions, they are glad to help.

Mike, I've looked at most of the responses and, as a BETA Tester for QSI, I noticed you mentioned the decoder was a Version 6, which relates to the ORIGINAL QSI decoders, NOT one that has been upgraded, am I correct ? In THAT instance, you have a problem. That particular version had the BASIC features of a normal decoder but NOT the advanced features like BEMF and speed tables . This is thanks to Mike's Train House and their frivolous law suit (that he LOST) stating he "invented" the DCC features . QSI and other sound decoder manufacturers had to cripple those features until the suit was settled, which took YEARS . Thanks MTH. If you really want to have those features, you MUST upgrade to the Version 7 chip, (available from QSI or Litchfield Station . (I am sure there are others but I do not know all of them.)? When I BETA tested the QSI programmer and the upgrade chips, those features were added as part of the upgrade. The upgrade chips run about $30.00 - $35.00 , are easy to install, and can be ordered with the type of loco you purchased or reprogrammed with any file you want using the QSI programmer and software from QSI. Trying to make the old chips work is like shoveling sand from the bottom of a hole. The original chip is unstable and a short circuit will usually reset them back to default CVs, which means that you will need to attempt to re-program them almost every time a short happens on the layout.? There are some that say it is possible but after doing this for almost 18 years, I can provide documentation about it if necessary . In any case, my strong suggestion is to purchase an upgrade chip , toss the old one into the circular file, and have a much better decoder for less than most silent decoders. Contact me off-list if you want the info. Respectfully, Nick Kulp "I'm not a failure. I started at the bottom and I found it easily attainable. False "Online" with DecoderPro
I just started DecoderPro on one of my computer terminals which is NOT connected to my layout (which, in any case, is turned off) and was surprised to see the following at the bottom of the page:
"Service Mode Programmer NCE Is Online ? ?? Operations Mode Programmer NCE Is Online" Normally, when the NCE Controller is not turned on I get a message about not being connected. What is going on? Thanks, Michael Boyle |

Marc,
Yes, I "Write Changes..." each time. Dave, I set Vstart to Zero. I could not set Vhigh to Zero so I set it to One. If I'm interpreting the "Gotchas" comment this should have minimized the effect on the Speed Table. But even with the Step 1 of the Speed Table at 1 and Step 28 at 10 (a low, linear line) the loco goes like a wild stallion. Any thoughts? May sound dumb? but, once done,? you are doing a " Write Changes on Sheet " or " Write full Sheet "? so it all gets written to the decoder? I assume ?

开云体育Michael, IN JMRI the two items you mention are are covered over two panes.
The first has V start and V max with the option above to use these
instead of the speed table - select this option. V start is
normally set at about 32 this gives a reasonable start. Use V max
for the top speed. Do not use the speed table option until you are totally OK with these settings. Gerry

What is "Hysteresis"? Does this have anything to do with setting the TCS decoder momentum, brakes, etc to 0?

Re: Speed matching tips
I've heard the same and you can see it sometimes on videos that prototype locos start slightly differently even the same type. So long as your locos don't fight each other with slipping wheels it is ok. Mine even though well matched, will push or pull each other as they start moving, but they don't spin wheels unless the train is too heavy or grade too steep, much as the prototype.
