Clone FT817 to FT818 11
From: Leicester Hibbert <rhi55057@...> Sent: Sunday, 20 October 2024 4:28 PM To: '[email protected]' <[email protected]> Subject: Clone FT817 to FT818 Hi All, I’m having trouble trying to clone a FT817 to a friend’s FT818 using FTBasicMMO with a CT-62 cable, and a direct Clone Cable as described on P69 of the FT817 Handbook. In both cases the procedure ends abruptly with an error message. Am I wrong to think it should work? 73 Leicester Hibbert VK4ALH

FL110 with 817 10
Hi I was wondering if anyone has any tip on this combo . it seems to work ok but as the 817 is so low power , the T/R switching on the amp keeps cutting in and out on ssb with the audio.. When Im at full voice its fine, but on pauses as i take a breath (yes I do that!) it goes to RX again,, meaning every over is on/off/on/off and choppy. I need faster tx/attack... but longer "hang time" to stay in tx after i shut my pie-hole a few seconds. Does anyone us has used this combo know if there is an adjuster in the amp or mod for this. Any thoughts? 73 de Jem VK7JEM

Ft-818 27
It seems that the FT-818 group is exhausted, so I try here. My 818 has no output on 2 m, while it works on 70cm and HF. The SWR is at maximum, so I think some relay is not closing when it should. Is there any way to have the diagrams and the component layout plan of the 818? Thanks to all Pietro I2OIM

Internal battery FT-817ND 42
I have a roughly 6 year old Windcamp battery, All has been fine with it until this week when it literally expanded like a balloon. The physical structure is not swollen, but the plastic cover is 'puffed up' like a balloon and can be pressed back into shape. I assume something within is emitting a gas and I have removed it from service for disposal. This leads me to ask what is now available for internal fitting on the FT817? (preferably to the UK area). Thanks, Andy GD1MIP

LDG Z817 9
I have a Z817 tuner, I bought it 2nd hand, it came with the control cable but I do not believe it is the original cable. My FT-818 will not work with the tuner, it does not change mode and power and so the tune cycle fails. The Baud rate is set correctly. The tuner works fine without the cable I.e. manually sending a carrier to tune. I do not know what is at fault, the cable, the ATU or the FT-818 Is there anything special with the original LDG cable? Any thoughts? Thanks Allan G4NNJ

nothing special about a twinlead dipole
Yes, common on domestic VHF-FM radios, though they may have a 300 ohm input or a 75 balun. The only small innovation/variation on this (as with G5RV) is using a specific length of twin as a matching stub, though I'm not convinced that an air core balun for 40 m at the drive point and coax isn't better. I've also used CRT LOPT core with coax wound on it at the feed of a random wire. Also low loss twin of any impedance is plastic spacers (width depends on diameter of wire) and a pair of wires. Also if you want to use a tuner (match box), then that works best with no twin feed, put it at the feed point, and then the important thing is avoiding a half-wave (or maybe full wave) as most tuners can't match that.

author of an article assigns all rights to the ARRL
That's a draconian theft of Intellectual property unless the Author still has all rights and the ARRL is simply getting non-exclusive publishing rights.

Feb QST article A Portable Twin-Lead 20m Dipole 17
My father gave me this article back in 2002 and we made a few dipoles. I'd love to get a copy of this article, but can't find it anywhere online. Would anyone happen to have a copy of this? I think these dipoles are made from foam twinlead. Maybe I am remembering the wrong article. 73, Jerry K8CMI

Home Power Supply for Yaseu Ft 818nd 25
Hi, This has probably been asked before, but, what is a decent power supply to use at home with an FT 818. One that plugs into the wall :-) Thanks Tony

FT817 battery
Martyn, I was examining the 18650 battery that I have. 3 of them in a package looks like it could be attached, if not inserted in the compartment. I haven’t looked at the wiring, and don’t know where the 5 wires go. But now that the kit has been ordered, no need to do that. What is the expected 3000 mAh battery run time on a typical SSB 817 @ 5 watts? Nice going on the 3D printed cover. Mike Davis WA1MAD

Greetings, Subject line says it all. I have output on vhf but no output on HF in any mode. Trying to remember if I read about someone else having the same trouble recently. Any input appreciated. Thanks, Mike NQ7K

Recent final board price / availability? 36
Has anyone ordered a final board recently? I picked up an 817 with very low output at a hamfest and wondered if the board is still available and price. Thanks John N4HNO

Anyone ever tried remote HF CW operation? 6
In our 80's, we are downsizing -- dramatically. Will be moving from 2,500 sq ft house we built 17 years ago to 1,200 sq ft apartment. Our son lives about 10 miles away from the apartments on 5 acres with big trees -- perfect for one or more dipoles. Has anyone ever tried -- or is anyone now using -- remote operation? Here's a link to a presentation about remote operation. chrome-extension://efaidnbmnnnibpcajpcglclefindmkaj/https://k6ufo.com/attachments/Remote_Op_Ten_Things.pdf Seems as though I could put my FT817 or FT857 at his place, get another 817 or 857 for the apartment, and link them remotely over the 'net, and operate CW -- which is all I do anyway. Anyone tired this, or, doing it now? Would it be as simple as a laptop and a rig at each location? Thanks -- -------- Joe W4HH

Solar Generator for portable power 17
Has anyone used one of the small, so called, "solar generator" batteries to power the FT-81X series radio in portable operation? I'm looking at a HOWEASY 120 watt unit. It is basically a 88 watt-hour (7.3 amp hour) lithium-ion battery in a case measuring 6.6" x 3" x 4" and weighing 2.3 pounds. It can be recharged from 110 AC power, 12 volt cigarette lighter automobile socket, or solar panel. It has two 120 watt 110 AC outlets, two 10 amp 12 volt DC outlets, and four USB outlets along with a built in LED light. $ 69.99 on Amazon. If anyone has experience I would love to get your thoughts. I'm wondering if the internal circuitry (inverter, battery management system, solar controller, etc.) cause RFI.

multi function encoder 11
Hi On my 817ND the multi function rotary encoder occasionally tunes the opposite direction and feels very loose. Can anyone recommend a suitable replacement? Thanks & 73 Nick

Digital input sensitivity 8
Hi all, a little help. Is the digital input sensitivity always the same for all bands? Or I can have a different input volume for a specific band (VHF, in my case). Tnx in advance pietro I2OIM

Weird behaviour with power supply 6
Hello everyone :) I have recently came back to the ham radio hobby, and decided to remove some dust from my old FT-817 (not ND) To my surprise, the unit refuses to turn on when connected to a 13.8V power supply, but when I use the 12V charger everything is normal I have checked the power supply with a tester and I see the correct voltage on both ends of the power cable, so I'm a little puzzled. I don't think this should be a problem, since the radio should work just fine even with 12V, still I'd like to understand what's happening Has someone experienced the same issue? I made a quick search on the topics and the FAQ, but didn't find any Thanks!
