Re: FT-817ND power takes time to reach 5 Watts after powering on
You might try doing the pa install tuning. There are 2 pots on the pa board where using inline Amp meter with pa an?adjust each pot for proper current. Must do separate for each pot.?

Re: FT-817ND power takes time to reach 5 Watts after powering on
Hi Mike!
This is definitely a sign that something in the radio is getting worn out and likely will need to be replaced soon.? Based solely on the observations you've had, my initial suspect is a capacitor that is wearing out.? There was a pretty big problem with them between the late 90's and about 2007.? You can google "The capacitor plague" to read up more on that. ?
If you have someone in your local club who can do some basic radio repair, it would be probably be worth it to have them take a look.? Replacing capacitors is a pretty straightforward process but can be a bit difficult in a radio this small just because everything is close together.? However a package of capacitors will run you <$30 and maybe a couple hours of your time compared to buying a new radio.
?
Good luck with it!

FT-817ND power takes time to reach 5 Watts after powering on
Hello,
?
My FT-817ND (bought new in 2004) takes some time to reach 5 Watts after first powering on.?
?
Example: apply 12V external supply, power on rig, key down on 28.060 MHz CW.? Power is initially about 3.5-4 Watts, and current draw is about 1.6-1.7 Amps.? Keep keying down.? Current draw drifts up and power output drifts up.? After about 5-10 seconds, the rig reaches 5 Watts output at 2 Amps.? Thereafter, the rig puts out 5 Watts as long as the rig is kept powered on.
?
I observe this more pronounced on a few bands, e.g. 30m and 10m.?
?
If I give the rig 13.8V, the time to reach the 5 Watts output after power-on is shorter.?
?
If I turn the rig on, leave it on in receive mode for a several minutes, and then key down on 28.060 CW, I get the 5 Watts at 2 Amps immediately.?
?
Is this normal behavior for this rig, or is it a sign that something is aging and should be replaced??

Re: FT-818 Odd SWR Readings on 70 cm
Re: SWR. My FT817ND was purchased new in early 2006. The SWR readings don't match this table: On mine there are no SWR bars on 145 MHz, but 2 to 3 bars on 435 MHz with a dummy load good to over 1GHz. The rear and front connectors don't make much difference. Note SWR due to higher apparent resistance rather than lower is less of a risk, the 2:1 could be 100 Ohms or 25 Ohms, but 25 Ohms is higher current. Most SWR meters don't tell you which it is. Also an open circuit on the end of a transmission line will look like a short circuit at specific lengths and frequencies. I have a 50 Ohm load that can be connected as "through load" and with a 50 Ohm on that and an electrically short cable you then have 100 Ohms = 2:1 (which is safe) to check your SWR meter(s). The service menu settings don't calibrate the SWR metering. |
Re: Digirig APRS
Rick, I was thinking something more simple (my electronics habilities goes as far as pressing the power button). I was wondering if a Digirig and the APRSDroid would work. Daniel PY2TDB. Em qui., 27 de mar. de 2025, 10:53, VE1RNM via <rickmoskovits=[email protected]> escreveu:

Re: Iambic mode - A or B?
Why not use the keyer as a full keyer. ?Let it control the timing. I often hear users I can tell using a bug bad dah timing is sloppy sending. The why we are called hams poor cw ops from early days of radio?

Re: need help with my old yeasu ft-817
How many hours did you spend resolving that issue?
?
Yaesu charges $90/hr to repair Amateur Radios, and component-level repairs for a radio may not be cost-effective. They have to balance effort, cost, and time - with limited repair techs (they have been hiring techs for a while now), they may not be inclined to invest a few hours to identify a failed transistor when they could possibly repair a couple radios for other customers in the same time period.
?
If I remember correctly, Yaesu diagnoses the problem for free, providing the owner with an estimate of cost. Short of investing an hour or two to diagnosing the issue, then putting it aside awaiting your approval doesn't make sense (for Yaesu). If you refuse the repair, they have to eat the time invested in diagnosing the problem.
?
I sent Yaesu an FT-8800 that was given to me in a state that wouldn't power-up. They quoted me $395 for new main board, and when I declined, they returned the radio for free. An EE friend took the radio on as a project, he invested a couple hours before declaring it dead.

开云体育Rob I have a guy that does a great job on my radios. Had him work on my 817,Kenwood 200, Kenwood 450SAT. His name is Tim Moes in South Dakota. ? E-mail is tommoes@.... He does not accept bank cards. He is real reasonable. He does not charge you until you get your radio back. Dave On 3/28/2025 7:30 AM, Rob VE3RXH via

Re: Iambic mode - A or B?
John,
I'd second the recommendation for a single lever paddle.? A single lever is pretty much the same as using a bug.? If you accidentally manually key you dashes, the keyer will still accept the input (unless you like to send really long dashes with your bug!).? I use a 3D printed single lever paddle that was designed by Adam, K6ARK - actually, I printed a bunch of them and have one for each radio.

Re: need help with my old yeasu ft-817
I'm curious what they did and what they charged. I sent an FT857D to Yaesu in California for repair a year ago. They told me they would need to replace the main board and it would cost over $650. This was more than I had paid for the radio. It gave me a clue, though, about where the trouble was. I had the radio returned to me. What had happened was that I was operating portable on 50 MHz in a contest one day and saw some smoke come from the radio and it stopped transmitting. I had been looking for problems on the PA board, not the main board. After I got the radio back, I found a transistor on the main board that was burnt. I was able to order a replacement part from RF Parts and replace it for $5. It has been working ever since. I was surprised they didn't do that repair themselves. 开云体育Yes Jerry I use a great guy in South Dakota. He worked on my 817, Kenwood 2000, and Kenwood 450SAT. He does not take credit cards but the best thing is he will not charge you until you get the radio. Tell me some one else that will do that??!!
