Home Power Supply for Yaseu Ft 818nd
I use whatever I can get my hands on at flea markets, eBay, etc. I scope them for excess noise and try them on receive. I rarely get one that's too noisy. I'm actually more concerned about noise voltage peaks damaging something. You can always add external filtering. Whatever inductor you can make or buy and tantalum + ceramic caps. You can often just get away with a sub optimal filter that works well enough and call it a day. Additionally, one can get a higher voltage output PS and post regulate with a three terminal regulator IC. That alone gets rid of a lot of noise. Lastly, there's nothing like a battery for the ultimate in low noise. Just keep it charged at home. SLA, lithium, Nimh, whatever you want or already have. We're talking small money and still getting where you want to be. ? ? I'm the guy who just last week made two ATO fuse holders out of empty dental floss containers. That's where I come from in economical methods and imagination. ? ? ?YMMV, FWIW, JMHO, etc. Joe N1KHB?

开云体育You can usually find decent/good low amp linear power supplies at local hamfests (3,4 or 5 amp), but the Pro Audio Engineering units are nice too (I have one I use with a different QRP radio and I'm very happy with it). A very nice power supply can be made from a PC power supply, loads of info on Google. I modified one for my train layout to get 3.3 VDC, 5 VDC, 12 VDC, simple to do too. John VE7KKQ On Wed, Oct 2, 2024 at 10:22?PM Al WB9UVJ via <markaren1=att.net@groups.io> wrote:

One the local clubs around Ann Arbor bought a case of these a couple years ago and sold them at cost ($5/ea!) to the local ham community. They're being used in a lot of club projects.
Needs AC cord (I chop off oc PC cords), and I put Powerpoles on the 12v side. I have 4, all for radio projects. Clean, solid, and protection circuits. One's always in my 817nd go kit, and another's in the shack. 73 -- Jeff, KN8A |
Search for 10amp quiet power supplies. Many show up for $10-$20.? Mike WA1MAD On Oct 2, 2024 4:41 PM, Tony Murphy <tony1kenobi@...> wrote:

I use surplus server supplies for most of my 12v needs, which can be had, sometimes in bulk, on eBay and similar sources for very low prices. ? I get the brand-name ones, like HP, which are usually built to much higher standards than the commodity switching supplies, and most of the commercial ham models, and usually have over-voltage and over-current protections. ?They almost alway take a euro-style standard cord, so you're not wiring AC, with the risk of something pulling apart, or trusting the sometimes iffy grounding of the cheap supplies. ?The only downside so far is usually needing to solder a resistor or jumper across two pins on the edge connector to turn on the output. ?They also probably supply a whole lot more current, by orders of magnitude, ?than an 817 ever needs.? |
Well I received the power supply I linked above and it is quiet it seems.? However during transmit the 12 volts drops almost a volt.? While it seems nice, I am going to return it to Amazon.? My suspicion is the voltage drop will be more pronounced when the supply heats up.

开云体育The $7 power supply mentioned earlier would likely be a better match than the power supply you linked to on Amazon. The $7 PS is made for industrial applications and likely handles larger power draws better. Also, the $7 PS can be adjusted up to 14v, as mentioned on the MFG datasheet. I ordered 3, and with shipping and taxes it worked out to $11/ea (< $34 for all 3), I'm sure I'll find QRP applications for that little PS. I think it was a good decision to send the PS back. No power supply of any worth should do that. It makes me wonder if it's a design issue, or just a bad one that didn't get rejected in QC. Good luck with whatever you get to replace it.

They all drop a bit. You must be reading a digital volt meter. If it was analog, you'd never notice.? Mike WA1MAD On Oct 4, 2024 1:33 PM, Al WB9UVJ <markaren1@...> wrote:

开云体育I think he might notice a 1 volt drop on a 12v power source, even on an analog meter. An 11v power source is perfectly acceptable for an FT-817, but it's not an 11v supply - it should hold the voltage better under an amp or two draw in my opinion. Ok. Let us know if another ps does the same. I'm running battery, but never noticed. Thanks 73 Mike WA1MAD On Oct 4, 2024 6:59 PM, Al WB9UVJ <markaren1@...> wrote:

开云体育It also depends on where he’s measuring it. ? If being measured at the power supply’s output terminals, then it is probably too much drop, however, if it’s being measured on the FT817’s internal voltmeter, then a 1V drop is quite possible, especially if the lead from the power supply to the radio is quite thin. ? Whichever the case, 11V is more than adequate to give full output in the radio as it will give full output down to at least about 9.5V. ? 73….Eric VK2VE. ? 开云体育Hi Al, ? If that’s the case, then the 1V drop is quite acceptable as it is also reflecting the voltage drop in the cable from the power supply, especially if it’s a fairly thin one, as they often are. ? I think you’ll find that you will also see a voltage drop on the radio’s meter when transmitting on internal battery, as well. ? 73….Eric VK2VE. ?
