multi function encoder

Hi

On my 817ND the multi function rotary encoder occasionally tunes the opposite direction and feels very loose. Can anyone recommend a suitable replacement?

Thanks & 73
Nick

Hi Nick,?
I got a replacement from yaesu, not very expensive at all.?
When changing the select pot make sure that you remove the battery before doing anything else and replace it last. It's not a hard job but take your time, the rubber buttons can be a fiddle, lots of flux and a big iron to unsolder it, a good clean up of the pads then solder the new one in.?

Instead of the Yaesu encoder, I recently replaced my encoder with a Bourns PEC11L-4220F-S0015-ND encoder. These are 15 PPR, 30 detent encoders with a reliability rating of 100,000 cycles.

The only difference between the two encoders in practice is that the bourns encoder has a threaded housing instead of the smooth housing of the alps.

The Bourns encoder has almost 7x the rated cycles of the yaesu encoder.

Be warned: you will need a good solder sucker and be very careful not to knock off any SMD components.

Thanks, I see Digikey have the Bourns encoders. I've not dismantled the radio to inspect it yet but is it possible just to cut the decoder off it's legs then remove the legs individually? I'm not bothered about destroying the old one, rather preserving the radio PCB.

You cannot simply cut the legs off. The encoder has two large mounting lugs that are soldered to big copper pads on the pcb, and you cannot just cut these off without causing damage.

I highly recommend getting a plunger solder sucker. They are not expensive and they will help. I also think chipquik would help.

Rubbish! Wen I replaced my worn out encoder I carefully cut all the data connections and the mounting tabs, removed the encoder then carefully removed the soldered pin remains with a small tipped iron and a pair of fine tweezers. I cleaned up the holes with desoldering braid and installed the replacement from Yaesu. Everything works perfectly now.

How did you cut the mounting legs of the encoder?

Star Dos - I found your earlier post from 2021 about this /g/ft817/message/114244. How has your replacement performed over the last two years?

I see in the 817ND service manual Yaesu have two part references for their part so I've sent a query to Yaesu UK so see how their price compares with your alternative.

Sharp side cutters.

I got around to completing this repair today.

Yaesu sent me a Q9000795 rotary encoder (Alps, appears to be identical to the original one), they also sent me a new knob RA026960B. Total cost including tax and delivery was GBP11.66.
?
After removing the front panel , I was able to cut all the tabs off the old encoder, desolder the legs and clean the board. Very delicate operation, I noticed I scratched the coating off the ground track on top of the PCB in a couple of places, also the track below it but they checked OK for continuity.?
?
Fitted the new Alps encoder, cleaned the board and re-assembled. The radio has been sat on 40 meters monitoring some CW QSOs for the last couple of hours.

Excellent job Nick,
Glad you got it fixed, good for a few years yet.
