Torque specs?..what torque specs?...

Norman Leong

So, I thought I'd get in some long overdue quality time with our EV by changing the oil over the long weekend..that was until I got to the drain plug. Let me preface this story by saying that the factory setting for the drain plug is either 30ft-lb, or 37ft-lb, depending on which particular page of the Bentley manual you're referencing. Well, I'm not a big guy, but I KNOW I can loosen a plug that's set to either of the above specs, on my back, with the EV sitting on the ground (which is was not, but it doesn't matter..). So I attack it with a socket set + hammer, then move up to an ugly-looking collection of wrenches that enables a fair amount of leverage on the plug, and....nothing.. The plug does not give any indication of wanting to move. So I call my neighbor, who's quite a bit bigger and stronger than me, and he attacks the plug. Same result. He tries to loosen the plug to the point where he's afraid bad things will happen to the head of the bolt (ie shearing it off), stops, and shrugs. Since the dealer had done the last oil change I figured it was their problem, so I wander down there Monday AM, and..the service dept's closed because it's a holiday! But, the GM of the dealership is there, and I explain the situation to him. Fortunately, he knows me from past visits, and being a genuinely fair person, he tells me to bring it back the next day for a free oil change. So I show up again this AM, he greets me and goes straight back to the service dept. (where the WO was already written up), tells his SA what code to charge it to, and an hour later, I drive off with a free oil change. Best of all, when I get home and I go to put the belly pan back on, I check the plug, and yep, it's actually been tightened using a torque wrench this time... :) Don't get me started on the oil filter.

Alex -

Yes - I bought the seat on the right side of the picture.
and yes - I've found it stable enough using only 2 bolts...I thought about
adding two more holes in the middle of the floor but for now it doesn't seem
necessary.

James,

Did you buy the seat on the right in the picture? How stable have you found
it using only 2 bolts to fasten to the body?

If any of you out there have a late 1999 or 2000 model EVC (with new
fabric pattern) equipped for the either the double bench or companion
seat...This guy still has one for sale.
James,

I'd be very interested. I've been contemplating the bench seat, but it
does sound like the single is a lot more versatile. Ours is a late 1999
EVC and has the four (widely spaced) holes. I assume that's the same as
yours and that the single seat will fit in either pair.

Re: Mufffler

I just replaced my rear muffler with a German made one, Ernst I think,
and I got it at UAP/Napa for $180CDN. Came with tailpipe and half the
length going to the middle muffler. Fit like a glove, only took me half
an hour to install.

Does anyone have any experience with after market mufflers for a 93 EV? I
just discovered, mine will be in need of replacement soon, but I don't want
to pay VW prices. For my Jetta Diesel I bought a $12 muffler which has
lasted 4 years w/o problems and no sign of deterioration (the original
muffler lasted 10 years and 140 000 miles--that's a Diesel for you!). Does
anyone know the official inside and outside diameter of the exhaust pipe? I
thought about installing a free flowing muffler in hopes of gaining a few
horses.
Thanks

Re: Curtain snaps

Paul Rousseau

I posed this question to the group earlier (difficult curtain snaps).
Thanks for all the great suggestions. I ended choosing the non staining
lubricant solution. I chose "silicone lubricant" which you can find in
most auto parts stores. This didn't stain like an oil based lubricant
and so far works nicely. The snaps seem to now have just the right
amount of resistance going in and out. No word yet on the longevity of
this solution ( 2 uses, a month after spray) but I figure I'll just
spray again if it wears out.

I failed to introduce myself

I joined the list 3 weeks ago when I bought my 95 EVC but I failed to
introduce myself to the group.....

My name is Michael, but everyone calls me Buddah; and I currently live
in Chicago. I moved up here from the Carolina's a year ago. I also
own a 1972 VW Highroof Camper, which still resides down south hiding
from the road salt.

I am involoved with the Type 2 list, and have been hosting and
promoting a VW BUS festival in the mountains of NC for the past few
years. The High Country Bus Festival is held the last weekend of July
each summer near Boone, North Carolina. I started this festival for
all Splittys, Loafs, Vanagons and Eurovans. Last year we had over 70
buses from a 1958 Kombie to a 95 EVC.......and everything in between.
I will be driving down from Chicago if anyone wants to caravan along.

If anyone has any information on VW campouts here in the mid-west
please let me know....thanks, -Michael

Re: New leaker continued

Chris Noeske

I have two things to add to this, the Bentley manual (the "official factory
service manual") states that any crimp hose clamps that are removed need to
be replaced with screw type clamps. In addition when I was trying to find
the parts at the dealer to repair mine. There was no part number listed for
the crimp. The blue and black plastic lines are available by the meter. As
well as fuel line, and hose clamps. It wasn't apparent from the micro fiche
as to what exact parts were needed, so the parts guy just ordered everything
that looked like the correct part.

I had the leaker fixed today since it is urgent and I have no time
right now. I checked with a dealer, figured it would be easier to get
it reimbursed if there was a recall. Their service department had some
horror stories about this leakage problem. However when I asked how
they were going to fix it, they referred me to Parts dept, which
claimed the replacement part was exactly the same as the original. I
decided I didn't want to fix a problem with a problem and took my van
elsewhere. I'm still a bit puzzled as to whether the service
department has the tools to put a new crimp on and the repalcment is
really the same. If it is true however, it raises 2 concerns for me:
1. Some people from this newsgroup have had the line fixed by the
dealer. Did they really get a fix, or just a new part which will fail
later?
2. VW is not owning up to the problem (We knew that already) if they
have not changed the replacement part.

Paul EVWK93

When I inquired about fixes I was given the same story. The dealer wanted
to replace every fuel line, not just the crimp connection. And yes, after a
few years they will leak again, since the design has not changed. This,
however, does not seem to be a problem in Germany. I submitted this question
to the German t-4 forum and none of the members have ever experienced fuel
leaks. We discussed this a few months ago, it must have to do with the
gasoline her in the US.
For these reasons I am reluctant to have VW change my lines.

Re: Euro Headlights 93EV

RocknRolz

Hi, Eckhard

Just a couple questions for you; do you know what the fluting pattern on
the
lenses are? Will they be like the old Hella H-4s where there's a sharp
diagonal cutoff on the right (so you can actually read GD freeway signs at
night!). As Steve L. stated in an email xchange we had this past weekend,
they're "illegal" in the 'States, but when the alternatives are crappy
lights (which is what the DOT lights for the '93 are), I'd pony up for
illegal any day...

Also, what is the definition of "VERY expensive" shipping from Germany? I
can't give up my firstborn because he already answers to Daniel, but I
could
be convinced to work on a thirdborn... :)
I don't really have any info. I found a post on the German T-4 forum and he
just told me how much he wanted. Initially I was interested but then there
is the risk of loosing $120+ if this guy never sends them. I guess they are
the standard European H4, illegal here in the US. Shipping from Germany--and
I am guessing--would probably be $50 or more. I ordered 3 books from Amazon
in Germany and paid over $30 in shipping. A single airmail letter from
Germany is $1.50, we pay 55c? If you are still interested I can ask the guy
for more details.

Steve-
Will the Hella units you ordered fit into the stock openings (after having
them cut out) below the bumper - just like the stock lights? Or, are they
mounted in front if the openings on a separate bracket?

I've taken a bit of a risk and ordered 15 sets of Hella EV foglights.
I'll
know next week when the shipment is due to arrive and what the costs
will be.

I expect the set to run around $200 to $225. I think these fit all
years,
though the description is a little fuzzy.

I'll post the details next week.

Re: ....and blower resistors

Do you remember the rating of the thermal fuse you bought at radio shack by
any chance?

Steve with 95 evc

Re: ....and blower resistors

Heh Chris - thanks for responding

Still a couple of questions here;. If there are three speeds missing (1,2
and 3) wouldnt you need 3 resistors Or maybe they put 2 in series for the
lowest setting.

Second thing could they be marked in kOhms. A .02 ohm resistor would pass
600 amps (from the old I = E/R equation) but if it were a 20 ohm (.02 kOhms)
it would be shunting .6 amps much more resoanble a number

I will have to take this thing apart and see what is in there - my fan still
turns freely and makes no noises or squeaks - I had a Peugeot that had a
stiff turning blower motor so I know what they are like when those bronze
bearings start to seize

Awning

I am trying to find a good awning to install. I checked with a Winnebago

everything that I need. Can you help? Thanks, David Lawyer

Roof Storage

Hi,

Does anyone have a roof rack system on your evc. I have a 95 evc. I have an
old Sears car top carrier that I am considering using. Looks like I'll need
to fasten some rain gutter type brackets onto the side of the fiberglass top
to give me something to fasten the hooks to to hold the pod on. Looks like I
can do this without a rack.

Also, looking at the Yakima system. Looks pretty neat. I'll have to fasten
those same raing gutter type brackets onto the fiberglass to mount the racks.
Kind of expensive. Looks like about $600 with the middle sized case. I
like the idea of being able to haul other things like a canoe with this
system. Do you know of where to purchase this cheaper? Will this go on the
roof ok and will I be able to raise the top with it fully loaded? I imagine
I should try to keep the unit as far to the rear of the van as possible.

Also, does anyone know of a good waterproof bag/container to use in that area
above the cab that looks like it was made for storage. ??

Thank you , David Lawyer, Kentucky ( Getting ready for major road trip )
