Re: Fuel Lines and VWoA
Jerry Carter
Hey guys,
Sorry to leave everyone hanging on the Ev leak effort. To date with the help of a couple of guys from this site, we've been able to put together a list of about 97 names of 93 EV owners (includes 4 92 owners). We have not been able to contact but half of them, BUT if you consider the total number of leakers vs the total population, there is a 25.3% population of leakers, or abot 50% leakers for the contacted population. That my fried is a LARGE % - clearly there is a big problem out there for VWoNA. We're working on a letter (representing the group) to send to... one thought is VWoNA another to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). We're looking for action from VWoNA to take ownership of this problem and stop giving everyone the round around. As we get close (have to close on a letter and contact a few more folks), we'll let everyone know. We're going to make this one have a BIG impact to folks back at VW so we don't have to deal with the "...unpleasant woman..." Re: Fuel Lines and VWoA
Jerry,
I've also been a bit lax in following up on helping you "finish" the list but even in it's current state it's probably enough to embarrass VW if it reaches the press. Too bad VW hasn't reacted in time with a voluntary recall. I'm sure the bad press is the last thing they need. Ron |
Re: Another Leaker
Paul,
Just some advise based on my experience. The leak may not necessarily be the crimp connection. Also check the hoses that go to the fuel rails ( from the tee) . That's where mine leaked and then the gas ran down the hose and it appeared that the leak was at the crimp connection. My crimp connections were actually fine (although everyone will say they will eventually leak). I suppose the only safe thing to say is replace them all. I plan to change the crimp connections also in the near future. Ron |
Re: ....and blower resistors
Chris Noeske
<<do you know what the values of the heater blower resistors are in ohms
<<and wattage. My thinking is that if the fuse does not blow ( and mine <<did not) the wattage value of these must be way too small. The values are printed on them usually, .02 ohms, and .04, the power dissipation value is somewhere around 100Watts. The fuse in the fuse block is sized so that it will protect the wiring, and not blow when the fan is run on high speed. The resistor will always get hot, and are designed for this. It is mounted in side the air ducting, so that it gets forced air cooling. When the fan motor bearings start to get too much friction, the resistor will get hot enough to damage the plastic or worst case start a fire. In this case the thermal fuse on the resistor pack will melt open. Your resistor is not burned open the thermal fuse is. Unfortunately the fuse is not replaceable, and the resistor assembly needs to be replaced, as well as the blower motor. You may be able to oil the motor shaft and work it into the bearings. If the bearings have started to gall then oiling will not help, and the new resistor will eventually blow open too. In short if everything is working properly the resistors are sized properly. |

Fuel Lines and VWoA
Eckhard Rolz
Since I had complained to VW about my leaking fuel lines, I received a call from
a "customer service representative." She told me I needed to take the van to a dealer. If they diagnose a leak, VW would inform me of the assistance they might give me. (This lady was friendly and professional). This is two weeks after they had told me that I was on my own. At that point I had asked for a letter, stating that they will not replace the fuel lines. I told the lady about 2 weeks ago (who was definitely not a customer service representative, but a pretty aggressive and unpleasant woman) that I need this letter in case the van goes up in flames, so I could show it to my insurance company. I guess I am happy that they reconsidered and called me. The problem now is that I had immediately fixed the leaking fuel line to avoid a fire. How can I have a dealer certify that it is leaking?? First, this 93 allegedly has a 95 engine, so I had hoped they had fixed the fuel line. I checked a few weeks ago and realized I had the dreaded crimp. But since I live in warm weather, I hoped it could wait a bit. Went skiing this weekend and afterwards, smelled gas. Checked under the hood and saw the famous crimp leaking. Stopped almost immediately, slept in the van and waited for it to warm up the next day. Luckily, we were able to drive home. Now it is time to fix it immediately. I've seen past posts on this but still have one question. There are two crimped connections to 2 hoses coming out of a black sheath. One is black and was the leaking fuel line. The other is blue. Any idea what this is? Should I also get it fixed? Appreciate any suggestions. The tardy Paul EV93Wk ------------------------------------------------------------------------ WANT FREE MAGAZINES?
