Re: New leaker continued

Chris Noeske

I have two things to add to this, the Bentley manual (the "official factory
service manual") states that any crimp hose clamps that are removed need to
be replaced with screw type clamps. In addition when I was trying to find
the parts at the dealer to repair mine. There was no part number listed for
the crimp. The blue and black plastic lines are available by the meter. As
well as fuel line, and hose clamps. It wasn't apparent from the micro fiche
as to what exact parts were needed, so the parts guy just ordered everything
that looked like the correct part.

I had the leaker fixed today since it is urgent and I have no time
right now. I checked with a dealer, figured it would be easier to get
it reimbursed if there was a recall. Their service department had some
horror stories about this leakage problem. However when I asked how
they were going to fix it, they referred me to Parts dept, which
claimed the replacement part was exactly the same as the original. I
decided I didn't want to fix a problem with a problem and took my van
elsewhere. I'm still a bit puzzled as to whether the service
department has the tools to put a new crimp on and the repalcment is
really the same. If it is true however, it raises 2 concerns for me:
1. Some people from this newsgroup have had the line fixed by the
dealer. Did they really get a fix, or just a new part which will fail
later?
2. VW is not owning up to the problem (We knew that already) if they
have not changed the replacement part.

When I inquired about fixes I was given the same story. The dealer wanted
to replace every fuel line, not just the crimp connection. And yes, after a
few years they will leak again, since the design has not changed. This,
however, does not seem to be a problem in Germany. I submitted this question
to the German t-4 forum and none of the members have ever experienced fuel
leaks. We discussed this a few months ago, it must have to do with the
gasoline her in the US.
For these reasons I am reluctant to have VW change my lines.
