Re: Hella Fog Lights on order from Germany

Gareth...I went to Car Nutz in Bellevue, they are specialists in all sorts
of custom car accessories incl. fog lights. They did a great job for me
mounting some PIAA lights in my EV cutouts...but lots of light and
installation options to choose from. Dean

Steve-
Will the Hella units you ordered fit into the stock openings (after having
them cut out) below the bumper - just like the stock lights? Or, are they
mounted in front if the openings on a separate bracket?

I've taken a bit of a risk and ordered 15 sets of Hella EV foglights.
I'll
know next week when the shipment is due to arrive and what the costs
will be.

I expect the set to run around $200 to $225. I think these fit all
years,
though the description is a little fuzzy.

I'll post the details next week.

Re: ....and blower resistors

Do you remember the rating of the thermal fuse you bought at radio shack by
any chance?

Steve with 95 evc

Re: ....and blower resistors

Heh Chris - thanks for responding

Still a couple of questions here;. If there are three speeds missing (1,2
and 3) wouldnt you need 3 resistors Or maybe they put 2 in series for the
lowest setting.

Second thing could they be marked in kOhms. A .02 ohm resistor would pass
600 amps (from the old I = E/R equation) but if it were a 20 ohm (.02 kOhms)
it would be shunting .6 amps much more resoanble a number

I will have to take this thing apart and see what is in there - my fan still
turns freely and makes no noises or squeaks - I had a Peugeot that had a
stiff turning blower motor so I know what they are like when those bronze
bearings start to seize

Tires

I know there has been a million postings on tires in the past but I don't
have access to those postings. What are the best light duty truck tires to
use and size? Thanks, David Lawyer

Awning

I am trying to find a good awning to install. I checked with a Winnebago
dealer who priced one at almost $500. And, I couldn't tell if that included
everything that I need. Can you help? Thanks, David Lawyer

Roof Storage

Hi,

Does anyone have a roof rack system on your evc. I have a 95 evc. I have an
old Sears car top carrier that I am considering using. Looks like I'll need
to fasten some rain gutter type brackets onto the side of the fiberglass top
to give me something to fasten the hooks to to hold the pod on. Looks like I
can do this without a rack.

Also, looking at the Yakima system. Looks pretty neat. I'll have to fasten
those same raing gutter type brackets onto the fiberglass to mount the racks.
Kind of expensive. Looks like about $600 with the middle sized case. I
like the idea of being able to haul other things like a canoe with this
system. Do you know of where to purchase this cheaper? Will this go on the
roof ok and will I be able to raise the top with it fully loaded? I imagine
I should try to keep the unit as far to the rear of the van as possible.

Also, does anyone know of a good waterproof bag/container to use in that area
above the cab that looks like it was made for storage. ??

Thank you , David Lawyer, Kentucky ( Getting ready for major road trip )

Re: Euro Headlights 93EV

I just got an offer for used headlights from Germany for a 93 EV. One headlight
(incl. turn signal) DM 120. (About $60, but shipping from Germany is VERY
expensive). Since I don't want to spend that much on headlights I thought I'd ask
the list.
Hi, Eckhard

Just a couple questions for you; do you know what the fluting pattern on the lenses are? Will they be like the old Hella H-4s where there's a sharp diagonal cutoff on the right (so you can actually read GD freeway signs at night!). As Steve L. stated in an email xchange we had this past weekend, they're "illegal" in the 'States, but when the alternatives are crappy lights (which is what the DOT lights for the '93 are), I'd pony up for illegal any day...

Also, what is the definition of "VERY expensive" shipping from Germany? I can't give up my firstborn because he already answers to Daniel, but I could be convinced to work on a thirdborn... :)

Are you sure of those pressures? The max. rated pressure for the Agilis
tire is 54psi (check the sidewall).
Perhaps the rear pressure figure shouldn't be 47psi instead of 57?

Bruce,
My 2 cents.
I find the difference in RPM between the Agilis tires I now have
(205/65/15)
and the original Goodyear G64's (195/70/15 , load rating 1389 lbs @ 44psi)
on
my '93 EV is insignificant. I had also calculated this once before and
concluded that the difference was within variations you would see from tire
wear. Also keep in mind that both of these tire sizes were delivered from
the factory on the '93 models. I would highly recommend staying with the
Agilis tires unless you are sure that any alternative Pirelli is properly
rated for the EV. The reduction in road noise with the Agilis tires versus
my original Goodyear tires is truly amazing.
Ron >>

Thanks again for your .02 Ron. Right on with re sidewall strength ...
although your calculations re difference same as tire wear is relative.
Start smaller and grow smaller. The substitution of tire noise for engine
noise at speed is most definitely a compromise + extending compromise(s) re
mpg/mph/odometer etc. At least with the automatic EVC's, this is very
apparent. Perhaps with the five speed shifters not so much so. Side by
side
driving comparisons of similar auto 1995 EVC's proved this beyond reasonable
doubt. Just returned from caravan voyage to Mex with another EVC same
year/type ... new Agilis 205's on his and used G64's (24K) on mine (end wash
re wear caluculation). Hooked up and traveled 9 hours down the road. I now
know of some slightly used Agilis 205's available at a discount if a reader
is interested. I have his email address. Anyone thinking of entering a
relationship with a smaller dimensioned tire for 40000+ miles best be ready
to commit for that is a compromise ... and its a long marriage. Now if the
Agilis 215's were available stateside ...

[btw .. Winnabego recommended cold tire inflation presures for EVC are:
Front
51 PSI (352 kpa) Rear 57 PSI (383 kpa)] These are totally different than
what the factory manual reads. Did someone mention in the digest re
Volkswagon AG worries re litigation and tires? R.....ite ... (~) ...
whatever. Happy motoring on whatever treads, but know her before you marry

50K miles, awning, window screens, middle seat, new Goodyear tires.
Put in service May 1996.
We love this thing but seldom use it as the kids get older.

Re: continuing agilis 205 saga

Slink,
Your practical experience regarding the rpm difference certainly is no match
for my theoretical calculation. I can however tell you from my experience
with about 90K with two sets of G64's (195/70/15) and now about 4K on the
Agilis (205/65/15) that the Agilis tires (so far) are my strong preference.
The G64 tires had an odd tread wear each time after about 10K miles that
resulted in a loud rumbling sound. Rotation did not help. I must admit I do
detect a slightly higher engine noise on my 5 speed EuroVan at cruising
speeds but I find this a sweet sound when compared to the previous tire
rumble. I'm also not sure if I just never noticed the engine noise as much
because it was drowned out by the tires. Anyway, your point on higher RPM
is a good one and should be considered.

Tire Load Rating Chart

Eckhard Rolz

I found this on the German T-4 Forum web page. Since there was a discussion
about tires I thought this might help:

max.load in kg.

85=515 kg
86=530
87=545
88=560
89=580
90=600
91=615
92=630
93=650
94=670
95=690
96=710
97=730
98=750
99=775
100=800
101=825

for example: 1510 kg per axle = 755kg per wheel ==> Requires load rating of
99 or higher.

Dave, and all,

I haven't heard anything further on the foglights. I will have 2 versions
available, one for the '92 - '95, and one for the '96 and up. From what I
understand, the '92 and up is a kit and includes everything - wiring, fuses,
relay, switch, lamps, etc. The '96 and up is just the foglight and bracket,
and should include the lamp.

The catalog is very vague, and I'm working from information that a German
friend has sent. He checked into this for me and spent a lot of time
researching. Based on his information, I went ahead and placed an order. I
have 10 sets of the Hella DE fog lights listed as fitting up to '95. I
believe these are OEM. I have 5 sets of the lights listed for the '96 on,
but there is no kit available. The '96 lights are listed as Hella FF. Both
the DE and FF are listed as using the H3 lamp.

I have somewhere a description of the DE and FF lamps, and will post this to
the list asap.
