Re: Roof Storage
Thanks EAB for your thoughts on the whitewater bag for the area above the
cab. I have thought of that too but, haven't found the perfect size yet. Passing through Boulder the other day I looked and the largest bag with a zipper was 29" long. The area is about 43". The larger bags, which would fit almost perfectly don't have a zipper, they top load which is undesirable because of the way you can access it from inside. Zipper bag would be great. Do you think a bag in that spot would mess up the aerodynamics much. I saw the perfect size bag in Louisville yesterday ( forgot the brand ) , its waterproof material but seams are not waterproof. I wonder how that would work in a rainstorm. David Lawyer |

Mary, I wish you lots of fun with your new EVC. I just picked up my
2000 the other day--paid lots more than you did, but I'm just so pleased for us both! Re: Chains on 99 EVC

No. Just the front and as I said, the traction was better than the WestyAgain, did you use chains on ALL FOUR WHEELS on your 99 EVC? with chains all around. The one thing I don't care for is the way the transmission lever engages when you're shifting between 1st, 2nd, and 3rd - should be a fluid click, but you've got to depress the button and hope you don't jump 2 gears. Perhaps they've addressed that in the 2000 model. Russ Bishop Ventura, CA |
Re: Bras or Front End Masks
I've had 2 VW OEM bras, including one for my 97 EVC, and each time I've
gotten minor but visible scratching in the clearcoat along the edge of the bra from the wheel well up to the hood, despite cleaning and waxing the van regularly, cleaning the bra regularly, and otherwise following the instructions. I didn't think I'd notice it as much on the EVC's "Arctic White" paint, but I do, and I don't like it. Maybe this doesn't happen with the other brands mentioned. Based on these results, I wouldn't recommend the VW OEM product, which probably costs more than the alternatives anyway. Re: awning
I purchased the awning thru a winnebago dealer, you can buy all the
Volkswagon/Eurobago stuff from a Winnebago dealer and they are closer than the VW dealer to us. (We live in the Chicago area and there is only one VW dealer that can sell Eurovans in all of Illinois-another story). I cannot remember the exact price, but it seems like the awning was around $350 and another $100 for them to install. |
Re: 99 EVC's for sale -Reply

I am curious how you did with the chains. I also have a 99EVC, w/ABSOn our Westy I used to put chains on all 4 tires because even though it had the great clearance, the traction never seemed that good. I had suspected that front wheel drive would perform better on snow and that seems to be the case. Sunday morning I woke up in Big Bear, CA to find an inch of ice covering the van and a foot of snow on top of that! The roads hadn't been plowed in about a hour so there was plenty of snow and ice on them as well. The chains on the Agelis 51s were as quiet as could be expected and I never felt a loss of traction at speeds up to 30mph. The chains were also quite easy to put on (which was not the case with our friends Volvo wagon!). Russ Bishop Ventura, CA |

For a couple of reasons, I bought the Pro Rac system (for about $150, through
the VW Dealer) that Winnebago shows as an EVC accessory in their catalog
after deciding not to use the Yakima racks that I had left over from my
Landcruiser wagon.

First, I was concerned about the overall height of my vehicle becoming too high to? fit into 7' parking garages.? The Pro Rac are low profile.? The Yakimas mounted to the top of my pop top would have been several inch higher.? My '97 EVC is about 6'8" tall with just the Pro Rac bars on the roof.? It is about 6'11" (just fits into the lot at my office) with a Tule bike attachment (folded down) on the racks. The other issue that concerned me was drilling the PLASTIC pop top of the EVC.? The tops are made of plastic, not fiberglass like the Westfalias.? The plastic is two layers thick with styrofoam-like pellets of insulation between the layers.? The Pro Racs mount through the top of the pop top, where there is about 3/4" between the layers, rather than through the side of the pop top where there may not? be as much clearance and the canvas is in the way.? Most importantly, the Pro Rac's mounting hardware utilizes rubber expansion nuts that you carefully drill through the outer layer of the pop top and then push into the space in between the layers.? You could find some similar hardware to use a Yakima mount for the top of your pop top, but if you use what comes from Yakima as it is designed for a fiberglass pick up truck shell, you will have problems.? If you drill all the way through both layers ot the pop top and then tighten the bolts to the inner backing plate, you will distort or crack the inside (gray headliner) of your pop top. You can add a outer cargo case (really, any brand as long as you space your bars the correct distance) with the Pro Rac or use other attachments.? You can place the bars wherever you want. I haul my 9' surfboard most of the time.? My top will stay up with one mountain bike and one surfboard without removing the load. I hope that this helps. Todd

Re: ....and blower resistors
when i replaced mine i went with a higher rating ( i like to live life on the
edge) also a real volksagen expert mechanic told me to use the higher ratingbecause he felt that VW used a thermofuse that was a little on the conservitive side . i have had no problems since i changed mine chris |

<<Still a couple of questions here;. If there are three speeds missing
<<(1,2 and 3) wouldnt you need 3 resistors Or maybe they put 2 in series <<for the lowest setting.>> There are two in Series. <<Second thing could they be marked in kOhms. A .02 ohm resistor would <<pass 600 amps (from the old I = E/R equation) but if it were a 20 ohm <<(.02 kOhms) it would be shunting .6 amps much more resoanble a number>> The ohm's law equation is valid. However, you 600 amp result you got is for the power dissipated in the resistor without the motor in the circuit. If you include the motors internal resistance, which is in series with the resistor, the result will be much less. What is the motors internal resistance? That depends! A motors internal resistance is dynamic and is dependant on several variables. The key variable in this case is motor load. The load comes from the physical resistance it has when pushing the air, and you guessed it the bearing friction. What this means is as the bearings seize up the motors apparent internal resistance goes down. And the motor circuit current goes up, which in turn causes the resistor to overheat. If you decide to replace the thermal fuse, make sure that you use one with the same rating, for continued fire protection. |

Re: awning
John Farmer
I forgot to mention something important about awnings. The first one I
had was jettisoned from the vehicle at highway speeds! It was the Carefree unit but branded with the eurovan logo(is that worth twice the price?). We were driving thru the panhandle of Texas with a major (50mph) crosswind. The darn aluminum box was blown open by the wind and the awning was released and blew off the van with lots of noise and, dare I say, "fanfare". The moral of the story: Use additional strapping on these units to keep the box closed! The two plastic latches on each end are not sufficient. |
