There's a maroon 93 EV at a local junkyard with the rear bumper parts
intact.
I could inquire if you like.

Roof Storage

Mike MyLymuk

I found a nice roof cargo bag while vacationing in Santa Cruz CA. The
place I found it was called Outdoor World. The manufacture is Allen,
they call it a Cargo Pack. It is made of 18 oz. vinyl-coated polyester
with a heavy duty double-sided zipper. It also has handles on the
sides. Total capacity is 5 cubic feet and folds to less than 1 cubic
foot. Price around $100.
Size 30" across x 15" front to back x 20" high.

EV Crashworthyness

Jerry Carter

All,

In searching the NHTSA site in preparation of the fuel leakage action,
I found the results of a 35 MPH frontal crash test test results. The
site location (for the 93 - you back up and go look for other years) is
below:

Although the EV van received only a one star (driver) and 3 star
(passenger) rating, looking at what drove the rating I came away very
surprised. The very low rating is based on the potential of head
injury for the driver and passenger. Here is how the data stacks up to
the other brands (see the curves to see what the numbers - big numbers
= bad news):

EV Chrysler Previa Aerostar Astro
Rating (D/P) */*** ****/ ***/*** ****/*** ***/*
Head (D) 1296 407 711 485 832
Head (P) 663 427 983 723 1512
Chest (D) 57 50 58 51 62
Chest (P) 56 39 56 57 60
Femur (D-L) 172 460 651 1590 1362
Femur (D-R) 80 1561 499 1310 1050
Femur (P-L) 336 1396 826 947 1001
Femur (P-R) 472 586 651 342 410

I believe the numbers show that the front is designed to crush in such
a manner as to have the engine slide under the van (its at an angle to
begin with). The height of the van keeps the wheel well intrusion to a
minimum (crashes tend to push the wheel into the wheelwell, then into
your leg).

If we can figure out what part of the van is hitting the head and put a
pillow on that part, I have to believ the EV is THE SAFEST van in a
given year group.

Has anyone seen an EV that has been in a front end collision?

Funny how the Ford Aerostar received a 4 star Driver/3 star Passanger
rating given their numbers vs the EV. Thoughts?

Jerry

Re: Propane tank cover

Larry Schellhase

John, I have nearly 13,000 miles on my EVC and I have
not had a problem with the cover comming off in normal
use. I was on a road in Death Valley that is
recommended for vehicles with high clearance or 4WD,
and I just took one bump a little too fast. The tank
bottomed out and by the time I stopped, the rear wheel
was on top of the cover. Luckily there was no damage
to the tank.

Someone gave me an 800 number to order one, it turned
out to be a VW dealer in Kansas and they sent me one
for $43+ shipping - should be here tomorrow.

One thing I do to keep from driving off from a
campsite without the cover and with the propane turned
one, is to store the cover in the footwell on the
driver side of the van. That way it is difficult for
me to forget to turn off the tank and replace the
cover.

Insect Screen

Steve Harvey

Has anyone had any problem with the insect screen of the tent on their
EVC. We have a 97 EVC that we use for camping most weekends in the
summer. The top has been up and down probably over 100 times and now
the insect screen is beginning to tear in several places. I remember
the screen on my 87 and 90 Westies was in perfect condition after years
of use.

Does anyone know some way of either fixing or replacing the screen or
do I just have to put up with this as one more example of inferior
workmanship/materials by Winnebago.

Re: '99 EVC leaker, H20 (not fuel)(yet)

Neil,

Time to get out the garden hose and spot check potential leak points.
Using the hose you can direct a stream of water n those spots while
your better half watchs for the leak... or you can watch and she can
spray.

I've found this is the only way to find leaks. Once you find it,
you'll know who to go see, VW or Winnebago. If you're lucky, you will
only have to plug a small hole.

leaks where the owner can see it.

Re: Roof Storage

Edward A. Bevan

Hi David:

I'm afraid I don't have an answer for the tricky roof rack question, but I do
have a suggestion for a waterproof
bag to strap onto the roof rack area above the cab ( my EVC is a 99, so I'm
assuming your 95 is similar )
You could use a white water gear bag. They are completely water proof, have solid
tie down
straps, come in all sizes and are made for rugged use like being lashed to the
thwarts of a white water canoe.
The bag looks like a stuff sack except the top part is long and flat so you can
role it up like a news paper, then
there's a strap that keeps it rolled.

I've not tried the idea yet because I'm looking for the exact size I want
in a closeout. Even though they are relatively inexpensive at full price, it's
not unusual to see these bags going
really cheap if you're patient and know where to look ( the closeout section of
any outdoor gear sales co. i.e.
REI or EMS would be a good start ). If you use the idea, please post your
thoughts so that I may learn.

Truly

Hi,

Does anyone have a roof rack system on your evc. I have a 95 evc. I have an
old Sears car top carrier that I am considering using. Looks like I'll need
to fasten some rain gutter type brackets onto the side of the fiberglass top
to give me something to fasten the hooks to to hold the pod on. Looks like I
can do this without a rack.

Also, looking at the Yakima system. Looks pretty neat. I'll have to fasten
those same raing gutter type brackets onto the fiberglass to mount the racks.
Kind of expensive. Looks like about $600 with the middle sized case. I
like the idea of being able to haul other things like a canoe with this
system. Do you know of where to purchase this cheaper? Will this go on the
roof ok and will I be able to raise the top with it fully loaded? I imagine
I should try to keep the unit as far to the rear of the van as possible.

Also, does anyone know of a good waterproof bag/container to use in that area
above the cab that looks like it was made for storage. ??

Thank you , David Lawyer, Kentucky ( Getting ready for major road trip )

Re: Agilis v. Pirelli Scorpion

Bruce,
But are they reinforced sidewalls? From a safety and longevity standpoint, this
is a must for the EV's.

Bruce Curry wrote:

Sorry to encourage more discussion on the dreaded tire thread but I just had
occasion to try on a friend's set of Pirelli Scorpions (205/75/15) which in
theory are quite a bit taller than the vaunted Agilis. His are on a 91
westy synchro. They fit my 93 ev w/out a problem on both front and back
w/out rubbing the body during turns.

These tires recently rated top of the class in several recent consumer tests
for both quietness of ride as well as handling in the wet. They have 8
belts, are rated for 40 or 50k miles, and I believe are rated for the weight
of most EV configurations. They have both an aggressive "truck" as well as
more sedate "passenger" tread pattern option. As I recall they are a
relative bargain at $69 at discount tire.

For those looking to raise their van, decrease their rpms or get more
mileage might want to check them out.

Bruce

Yes most definately. Side by side inflated comparison I've done (re new
tire
spares w/= pressures plus on vehicle comparisons). A significant eyeball
difference without using any math. One would have to question the
rationality of putting a smaller tire on already a marginally tired
vehicle?
Speedo readings are already inaccurate as to reading fast (would read even
more inaccurate or faster with shorter tires), EV's have low-torque
engines
(why increase RPM's at highway speeds which would equate to less MPG?),
increase noise due to engine buzz at speed (increased rpm), plus lowering
the
ever present limited ground clearance. Figure? My experience? Been
there
done that with other vehicles. Will pass on any degree of downsizing
vehicle
tires ... even if they were free. Unless living in mountainous terrain
or
towing something behind your EVC where shorter tires equate to higher gear
ratio, look for the larger diameter size tire. The 215/65R15C Agilis may
prove to be the answer if they can be found. I will run my Goodyear G64's
until I find an equally large or larger tire (re the Agilis 215/65R15C) to
replace them with. No complaints whatsoever with the G64's other than a
bit
noisy due to the aggressive tread pattern. Good hunting.... we are off in
our EVC to Alamos, Sonora Mexico for the Music festival .... =).

When speed 4 is selected it completely bypasses the resistor and thermal

Re: Roof Storage

Thanks EAB for your thoughts on the whitewater bag for the area above the
cab. I have thought of that too but, haven't found the perfect size yet.
Passing through Boulder the other day I looked and the largest bag with a
zipper was 29" long. The area is about 43". The larger bags, which would
fit almost perfectly don't have a zipper, they top load which is undesirable
because of the way you can access it from inside. Zipper bag would be great.

Do you think a bag in that spot would mess up the aerodynamics much. I saw
the perfect size bag in Louisville yesterday ( forgot the brand ) , its
waterproof material but seams are not waterproof. I wonder how that would
work in a rainstorm.
