Re: Trying to get my QY100 working in my DAW
ok this seems to be a step in the right direction because what it seems to me is that there is some kind of communication issue with either the QY100 or Ableton or both! :D
I changed the setting from note to cc but I still have nothing... cant edit anything with the korg nanokontrol... |
Re: Which hidden QY100 feature would you like me to uncover next?
#poll-notice
64 user bank is available in related devices of those years DB50XG, SW60XG and MU10. It was possible to load presets from QS300 into it and edit them if desired. When editing, direct access to samples, three forms of LFO, filter EG, PITCH EG? and AMP EG is opened (ADDRDD). The possibilities of creating a new sound from scratch go far beyond the standard set of XG. |
Re: Which hidden QY100 feature would you like me to uncover next?

There is a legend about the blocked 64 user bank (MSB 63). The developer of QY70 from the European division of Yamaha said that it was unlocked on the prototypes, but in the final version the Japanese blocked it. Maybe there are traces left in the firmware? |
Re: Trying to get my QY100 working in my DAW
Yes. If we talk about sound design (not patterns), then you should use several parts on one midi channel. That is, create a multi-layered sound, like on "adult" synthesizers. Sometimes this helps to overcome the limitations of XG. Also, you should not neglect the participation of effects in the formation of the sound. Full control is possible only with the use of sysex. |
Re: Trying to get my QY100 working in my DAW
each channel uses XG midiCCs for all the common controls (so just the midiCh byte changes)
accessing things like effects editing requires Sysex.
you can also set the XG parameters with Sysex. the difference is that midiCCs will always be returned to normal or initial values, whereas Sysex can be used to 'set'. can't immediately recall the extent of this, but Eric made a mapping for Novation RemoteSL a few years back (2015? if memory serves) - that isn't in the files section anymore (?). there are distinctions when addressing Pattern or Song tracks - effectively, there are 24 tracks, on the 16 midi channels: 'Song' are the main tracks, and 'Pattern' are the accompaniment tracks, if you want to think of it like that. |
Re: Trying to get my QY100 working in my DAW
Every MIDI CC parameter on the QY100 can be found directly on the QY100 if you go to Edit Mode and click Insert?then switch from Note to CC. The struggle might be that the QY100 makes use of not only MIDI CC but also RPN, NRPN, and various XG parameters. Those parameters might be harder to connect to unless the nanoKONTROL2 supports those parameters or allows you to write the hexadecimal code for controlling them.
?
MIDI CC should be sufficient for shaping most of the sound though as it will allow you to modify attack, release, cutoff, and resonance.

Via Midi CC on this device very limited control. Full control is carried out through short sysex messages. To edit sounds on PC (including multilayered) use the editor XGеdit (). And for editing without a computer use a midi controller capable of generating sysex messages (for example: NOVATION SL MkII, NOVATION remote zero SL, BEHRINGER BCR2000, ROLAND A-500PRO). Very few midi controllers can work with sysex. Basically, everyone uses only midi CC. |

just the standard, harmonic content etc. basically what is able to be edited in the qy100 I just want to simplify with this controller

What kinds of sound editing did you expect to be possible with the QY100 via MIDI?
?
I'm looking at the last pages of the documentation, which includes the MIDI Implementation chart. It includes some MIDI CC numbers, but it doesn't really say what those control. Here's a version of the that's easier to reference.
?
It appears that many more controls are supported by the QY100, Vibrato rate, depth, delay; Filter cut-off, resonance, EG envelope settings, reverb send level, chorus send level, but I'm not sure if these are only able to be provided or received from the QY100 as a bulk import/dump using SysEx messages... or if the documentation is misleading me by using Hex representations in the docs.
?
Honestly I've had no issues mapping the controls of something like the nanoKONTROL 2 to software plugins or DAW controls, but mapping them to an external device is less likely to work out. I would start with that documentation and really finding out what's possible with MIDI in controlling the QY100. In theory, it could be possible for some individual or company to create software that still runs on current operating systems that communicates with the QY100 using the appropriate MIDI SysEx commands. Other older synthesizers continue to be remotely tweaked using software, like the for the Access Virus, or for the Moog Voyager. But I find it unlikely that there are software editors for the QY100, because I expect most people to either use it as a mobile sequencer, or as a simple XG sound module.
?
I did find , which does mention "XG editors". I know the QY100 is more than just a General MIDI device, it supports the Yamaha XG standard. If this standard is what the QY100 supports, and it includes the ability to manipulate common filter and envelope settings, then perhaps there is something possible. I admit I have not done a deep dive on all that the XG standard is, I just thought it meant many more instruments... not a remotely controllable sound engine.

Re: Trying to get my QY100 working in my DAW
MIDI controllers that only have a USB interface need a USB host (e.g. computer with DAW software) to be used. Even though MIDI over USB is possible, it's not a standard that allows for the use of a simple USB-to-MIDI Interface. The USB-to-MIDI interfaces themselves require a host computer just the same.
It is possible to purchase a box that acts as a USB host, such as the CAMOLA USB MIDI Host Box USB to MIDI Converter MIDI Interface ($50). But honestly at that price, you might be better off purchasing a MIDI controller keyboard that has built-in MIDI DIN ports, such as the Behringer Swing 32. ?
You could use your MIDI controller keyboard with your computer, and route the MIDI in your DAW to go out of a USB-to-MIDI interface (such as the CME U2MIDI) that is connected to the QY100. But you're not going to be able to hear the instrumentation of the QY100 respond to that unless you connect a 5mm TRS cable from the "Line Out/Phones" jack of your QY100 into an audio interface connected to your computer and configure your DAW to monitor that audio while the USB is being sent to the QY100.
?
Overall, what are you trying to do with the QY100? Are you trying to use it as a sound module? It does have an amazing library of sounds. |
Re: Trying to get my QY100 working in my DAW
AHA!!! I figured thats what I might need. the controller is a usb mini to usb so would I just need a midi to usb mini and I could just plug it into the midi out of my qy100? I figured this might work but idk if power is transferred through midi as well... I was originally thinking that if they all go into the computer and there is a DAW on my computer then it would all work but ig not :( |
Re: Trying to get my QY100 working in my DAW
Sounds like some midi routing issues are going on. ?
A midi controller connected to the Computer should be able to control the QY connected to same computer ?via a 5-din midi/usb with proper setting and routing, but unfortunately I am not a DAW guy at all.?
?
Hopefully someone else can chime in.
?
I would also check out some youtube QY 70/100 Videos by user JayB and also his QY info on his website… he uses a DAW and the QY (if memory serves).
?
Welcome to the group !?
PS(One quick thing to check out the midi setting on the QY, especially internal/external control setting.)

Trying to get my QY100 working in my DAW
HELLO ALL!!! Let me first say thank you for this group and thanks for allowing me to join...
So ive been experimenting with the QY100 for a few weeks now (im still struggling when it comes to learning it lol) and ive been able to get sound into my DAW but I was hoping I could edit the notes I play in grid mode but I cant get any sound, just the midi data...
To be honest that isnt even the worst of my concerns because today while trying to map a midi controllers macros to edit parameters of the QY100 when I learned that since the controller is plugged into my computer via usb and that means that there would be no connection or signals between the controller and the QY100...
Im hoping this can be fixed by daisy chaining some usb and midi cables to eachother and having the QY100 power the controller but im not sure and I dont want to pull that trigger until im sure...
?
If anyone has been able to master the QY100 in something like Ableton PLEASE REACH OUT AND LET ME KNOW!!!! I love this thing so much but I just want it so be a little bit simpler...
thank you all :D? |
Re: MIDI LFO V1.0 is live! - Try it out to automate synched MIDI CC parameter changes to your QY70 or QY100 (This can also be used with other MIDI capable devices).
According to the Web Midi API documentation it should only work on:
?
May work limitedly with:
(However I disabled it from displaying on phones, though could enable this if I resize the display).?
Tablets could work on Android devices potentially, though you would need some sort of MIDI to USB-c to work with it as it requires a connected MIDI device to function. ?
iOS will probably never work though... unfortunately Apple has always lacked a lot of the new and cool web features with their phones and tablets. I suspect they do this on purpose as they make a large portion of their earnings off creators developing apps for their app store, so they discourage anything that would compete with that. It'll work on a Mac computer running the appropriate browser though. I developed and tested this on a Mac using Chrome and then retested on Windows.

It unfortunate it cannot run on Safari or mobile… Does it run on Chrome or Firefox on an iPad?
(I doubt it, but I figured it is worth asking as alot of people use iPads for music) -- “The longest journey starts with the first step." - Lao Tzu |

MIDI LFO V1.0 is live!
Try it out: About: MIDI LFO can be used to apply an LFO to your Yamaha QY70 and QY100 tracks (or other MIDI capable devices). You can choose what type of waveform, rate, MIDI CC, and other parameters to control with the LFO. The web tool even listens for play messages from your device, allowing it to re-trigger/sync the wave every time you begin playing on the device. How to use:
Compatibility:

And a reminder that this is version 1.0 of the webtool, so if you run into issues or notice something needing to be fixed, reach out and let me know.
