Crown Models refrigerator cars
I¡¯ve been collecting Crown Models refrigerator cars for several years now and have all but two specific cars. The ones I don¡¯t have and need to complete my collection are the Post Road Pale Ale #30 (SR-9050) and the Schlitz #3765 (SR-9006) cars. If anyone has one or both of these cars that they are willing to sell or to trade for, please contact me. I¡¯d love to have one of each of the Crown Models cars. Thanks in advance if you can help in my search! There is one more Crown Models car I don¡¯t have - the special silver edition of the Milwaukee Road refrigerator cars that were made for the 25th anniversary of S Fest in 2000 for Badgerland S Gaugers who sponsored S Fest that. There were only a limited number of these cars made so they¡¯re probably impossible to find but if by any chance someone wants to part with theirs, please let me know. Tom Detmer Richmond, VA

Unknown Manufacturer or Custom Built Diesel 6
A number of years ago I bought this unit that was powered using Miller Labs trucks. I used the power trucks to make an S-2 with 4 powered axles. Just curious if anyone has any idea where this shell was made. John Keating

Gilbert track plan 27
Someone recently asked me for help designing an interesting and fun layout for him. He said he had 7' x 12' to work with. I started the conversation by sending him a copy of the pages from Gilbert's instruction manual, pointing him to layout number 10 which has three loops, a crossover, and four sidings, and measures 6' x 11'. It's really cool. Looking at it critically, however, I realized that Gilbert had never built that layout. It has several glaring errors; for example there are four straight tracks on one end but only three on the other end! To fit together properly, it requires four pieces of straight track cut to custom lengths. I drew it out to scale and then confirmed it by laying out actual pieces of track on the floor. If anybody is interested, I can send you a picture of the drawing. And if you need track to build it, I can sell you that. Bob Graves

For sale: George Sellios's layout book 2
George Sellios, founder of Fine Scale Miniatures, wrote and published this book, "The Fabulous Franklin & South Manchester Railroad" in 1991. In 79 pages, it describes, and shows numerous pictures of, the incredible 23' x 42' layout he built on the second floor of the Fine Scale Miniatures factory. The cover says Volume 1, so perhaps he later published more books like this. While the trains are HO scale, the modeling ideas and techniques he describes in detail apply in any scale, and on page 34, there is a billboard advertising the early American Flyer trains before Gilbert bought the company. The price on the cover is $19.95. I would call it mint condition. Make offer. Bob Graves

Gilbert track plan #10
Is it possible that we're mistaking the layout as being all on the same level whereas the original intent was to separate the two loops at the left side of the layout so that one is above or below the other? This would explain the apparent "curved" switches whereby one loop "connects" with the other; AF never made these switches with what appears to be a full curve on one side and a half-straight and a half-curve on the other. Is it possible that someone at ACG created the original design centerline to be on two levels and then left it to someone else to show the ends of each track section and to come up with the quantities of items needed? The second person would then have assumed that the track was all on the same level and "fudged" the switches to make them work. Separating the levels of the two loops at the left end solves most of the problems with this layout; the other problem is the switch on the bottom that leads to the crossing diamond. This route has the equivalent of two straight track sections (one is the switch and the other is the crossing diamond) but the curve at the left end of the layout also only has two straights so this doesn't include the perpendicular distance needed for the switch at the bottom of the layout and the reverse curve that eventually leads to the crossing diamond. OOPS? If they'd made the switch lead directly into the curve leading to the the crossing diamond then this problem would also be resolved. Thoughts? Chris Harding

A.C. Gilbert?€?s Keystone PRR logo was better looking 2
This is the real PRR Keystone numberplate drawing. That wins over everything. A.C. Gilbert¡¯s Keystone PRR logo was better looking
A.C. Gilbert¡¯s Keystone PRR logo was better looking and more readable. The tender for a steam outline engine built in 1948 is being refurbished to its American Flyer Lines paint scheme. Researching the Pennsylvania Railroad keystone logo it was discovered the logo Gilbert put on his product is more distinguishable. A PRR logo from an old engineering document is compared side by side with the logo on a AF tender. This is an interesting ¡°point¡± for me, because it¡¯s an example of where a toy logo seems to look better than the prototype rendering. The decision is made. We¡¯ll be using Gilbert¡¯s PRR keystone rendition. It just looks better.

Switching Layout Ideas 2
When I saw the previous postings about switching layouts it occurred to me to suggest the Timesaver Layout as originated with John Allen of Gorre & Daphetid fame. There have been other variations over the years but I think that this track plan would satisfy an operator in a small space. I have modeled the Timesaver as a part of an HO scale layout. John Keating

Gilbert 955 Tuscan coaches with silhouettes
To all, I am looking for a pair of Tuscan/Maroon painted Gilbert 955 coaches (sintered iron trucks with KC) with the silhouettes in the windows to go with my Tuscan 918 Operating Mail Car and 951 Baggage Car. I have seen one on eBay up for bid (I don't usually go after any bid items) and another one on eBay with a listing of 955, but the photo shows it clearly numbered 655. I have a pair of 655 Tuscan/Maroon painted coaches to go with my Tuscan 718 & 651. Previous owner installed Sintered Iron KC trucks on a diecast frame and it is just a spark show when the truck hits the steps. They will be replaced by sheet metal LC trucks. Mike Cronin

AF Train Master 5
Group, I had a lot of links from the NASG web site to the "aftrainmaster" dot com web site. My notes indicated that it was owned/run by a "Jim Hammond". The web site became inactive a month or two ago and it now appears to have been completely taken over by a Chinese (?) company. So, apparently whomever owned the site, legitimately, has somehow let it lapse. Unfortunately, as these things happen, I am left with no choice but to look for obituaries. So, my question is, was the aftrainmaster web site run by this gentleman: https://www.riczofuneral.com/obituary/James-Hammond It mentions that his favorite hobby was trains. Any leads would be helpful, - Peter (NASG webmaster) -- Peter Vanvliet (info@...) owner, Fourth Ray Software Houston, Texas https://fourthray.com/ https://pmrr.org/ (personal web site)

Sad News 3
For those in the Midlantic area I am sad to report that Robert "Frankie" Merson has passed. Frankie was a staple and friendly vendor at numerous shows in the area with a VERY extensive spread of American Flyer along with S-Helper, etc. rolling stock and accessories. He will be sorely missed. More information is on the Funeral Home web site, https://www.brinsfieldfuneral.com/obituary/robert-merson Kyle
